ENJOY THE CITY OF SASKATOON’S NEWEST DOG PARK

June 9, 2015 - 7:17am

CY15-151

With the summer heating up, it is a great opportunity to visit Saskatoon’s newest Dog Park!  Hyde Park Dog Park officially opened Wednesday June 3, 2015.  Located in the Rosewood neighbourhood, off Boychuck Drive and Slimmon Road, is a fenced, 4.1 acre, off-leash space fully equipped with pet waste bags and garbage receptacles.

There are also five more active Dog Parks conveniently located throughout the city.  The following Dog Parks are available for all well-behaved and licensed dogs:

  • Avalon - south end of Broadway Avenue;
  • Caswell - next to the Mayfair Pool;
  • Silverwood - access off Kinnear Avenue or the east end of Adilman Drive;
  • Southwest - off Valley Road by the landfill; and
  • Sutherland Beach - west off Central Avenue, just north of Attridge Drive.

 With many people and pets enjoying the city this summer, remember these tips to being a responsible pet owner:

  • Pick up after your pet;
  • Keep pets on-leash in all areas of the city, unless the area is clearly designated (signed) as a Dog Park; and
  • Be considerate and courteous to other people enjoying the outdoors, and keep in mind that not everyone is comfortable around dogs, even friendly ones.

 For a map and more information, please visit www.saskatoon.ca/dogparks.

City Unveils Enhanced Routes to SaskTel Centre for Weekend Concert

June 9, 2016 - 3:31am

TU16-311

If you are heading to SaskTel Centre to see Garth Brooks on Friday and Saturday, the City recommends you leave early, carpool with three or more people, and load a long playlist of Garth’s greatest hits. Most importantly, drivers are encouraged to use one of the designated routes and obey temporary signage for direct access to parking.

Stay informed with #GarthInSaskatoon on Twitter and find details about the show at sasktelcentre.com.

The City and Saskatoon Police Service are working with SaskTel Centre to keep traffic moving between the back-to-back sold out shows, when traffic volume may reach 20,000 vehicles in the area.

“The unprecedented volume of traffic expected at one time requires careful planning and cooperation from drivers,” says Angela Gardiner, Director of Transportation. “For everyone’s safety and efficient parking, the City prepared two specific routes for SaskTel Centre guests, which will be optimized with longer traffic signals, SPS traffic control with reduced speeds and temporary signage.”

GETTING TO SASKTEL CENTRE:

  • Saskatoon Transit will have continuous service from the downtown terminal for all shows, beginning at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday and Sunday and 5:15 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Standard transit fares apply, and transfers and passes will be accepted. More at saskatoontransit.ca.
  • Park & Ride Shuttle Service (yellow bus) will available from mall locations for $5 roundtrip. More at sasktelcentre.com.
  • From South/West neighbourhoods: use Idylwyld Drive to Highway 16 (exit to The Battlefords).
  • From North/East neighbourhoods: use Wanuskewin Road (or Millar Avenue) to Marquis Drive.
  • Left turns from Idylwyld Drive onto Marquis Drive will not be permitted Friday and Saturday beginning at 8:30 p.m. to accommodate vehicles leaving the first show. Traffic on Idylwyld Drive will be directed to 71st Street for access.

“People should be prepared for slower moving traffic and remain patient, especially between shows on Friday and Saturday,” says Gardiner. “We will be actively monitoring traffic movement and can adjust signals if needed.”

Task teams involving the Fire Department, Saskatoon Police Service, tow trucks and traffic signal staff will be on scene to respond quickly to any and all issues. In an emergency, call 9-1-1.

The City of Saskatoon’s Transportation staff, Saskatoon Transit and Saskatoon Police Services, along with SaskTel Centre, thank everyone for their cooperation in making this an enjoyable event for Saskatoon residents and visitors.

CITY LAUNCHES CONSTRUCTION ZONE SAFETY CAMPAIGN FOR SECOND YEAR

June 4, 2015 - 10:38am

TU15-230

The City of Saskatoon has launched its Respect Work Zones campaign for a second year, urging people to slow down and pay attention when driving through construction areas this summer.

“The crews we all drive by every day are not only equipment operators, roadway inspectors and maintenance workers; they are somebody’s mom, dad, husband and daughter,” says Angela Gardiner, Director of Transportation. “This campaign is asking drivers to do their part to ensure our workers get home safely to their families at the end of the day.”

This year, through the Building Better Roads program, more than $53 million is being invested to build, maintain and repair more roads than ever before, which means more work zones. Respecting work zones will allow crews to focus on the job and safely complete this summer’s projects.

“Just last week we had an incident where crews were setting up to paint sidewalk lines on 33rd Street when a truck hit a fire hydrant and continued travelling toward them. The workers had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit,” says Gardiner.  “Every year, onsite workers, two-thirds of whom are new to the job, are put at risk by unsafe driving in close proximity to their worksites.”

It is also important for people driving to respect signage even when workers are not present. Barriers will stay in place where there are roadside hazards or where fresh pavement or concrete needs to set, to ensure the safety of people driving.

“We want to thank citizens for their patience during this construction season, which we know has been made even more frustrating with the closure of the University Bridge,” says Gardiner. “We care about the safety of our employees and everyone who uses Saskatoon’s roads - if everyone does their part, plans ahead and respects work zones, we will get through the season safely and successfully.”
