CITY CELEBRATES ABORIGINAL TRAINING PROGRAM GRADUATES
July 31, 2014 - 12:00pm
For Release August 1, 2014
CP 14-144
The City of Saskatoon, in partnership with the Gabriel Dumont Institute (GDI), Saskatoon Tribal Council Inc., and Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technology (SIIT), are celebrating the graduation of seven students from the Aboriginal Heavy Equipment Operator and Class 1A License Pre‑employment Training Program.
Students from the program were recognized at a graduation ceremony at Wanuskewin Heritage Park this morning.
The Aboriginal Heavy Equipment Operator and 1A License Pre‑employment Training Program is designed to train men and women to prepare for employment opportunities in the Saskatoon and Saskatchewan labour market. Participants take a variety of classes including: Class 1A (theory and practical); First Aid/CPR; Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS); Ground Disturbance and Transportation of Dangerous Goods; Confined Space Entry; and, Defensive Driving and Heavy Equipment Operator training where participants gain first-hand experience operating a variety of heavy equipment.
“The City is proud to retain and build on the strengths of existing and what we hope will be future partnerships with the Aboriginal community,” says Marno McInnes, City of Saskatoon Director of Human Resources. “This program is an important component of building an inclusive workforce and the Aboriginal community is a very essential part of this goal.”
Upon completion from the pre-employment program, 80% of graduates have secured long-term employment in Saskatchewan; 53% of those were hired by the City of Saskatoon. To date, 37 students have graduated from the program since its inception in 2010.
The City recognizes the hard work and dedication of all 2014 graduates and wishes them well in their future work plans.

2014 ROAD PRESERVATION & REHABILITATION REACHES HALF-WAY POINT
July 30, 2014 - 12:00pm
For
Immediate Release: July 31, 2014
The City of Saskatoon’s 2014 Roadway Preservation and Rehabilitation program is now 50% complete.
“Crews have now paved 89 lane kilometres; we plan to resurface 178 lane kilometres this year - the same distance from City Hall almost to Kindersley,” says Chris Hallam, Director of Construction and Design.
Most recently, crews worked around the clock to pave the Circle Drive and Highway 16 cloverleaf intersection as well as Faithfull Avenue and Miners Avenue.
Next week repaving work will begin on Millar Avenue from 43rd Street to Molaro Place, mostly in the evenings. Major intersection and roadway improvements at Airport Drive and 45th Street West will soon get underway and 24 hour paving of Circle Drive southbound from Attridge Drive to College Drive is scheduled to begin late August.
“We have received a lot of positive feedback from the 24 hour and night work this season,” says Hallam. “Less prolonged congestion means less likelihood of frustration and road rage.”
“With the flexibility of night, day and 24 hour work, we are more aware of planning construction to reduce the impact during peak times and ultimately making the streets of Saskatoon a safer place for workers and motorists.”
The City reminds drivers that even if work appears complete and workers are not present, barriers will stay in place where the road is hazardous to drivers or where fresh pavement or concrete needs to set.
Everyone can play a part in assisting workers to build better roads by driving safely, slowing down and respecting work zones.
Slow down, pay attention and respect work zones. Watch for pedestrians and work crews, and for everyone’s safety, please obey all detours, signs and barriers.

SASKATOON LIGHT & POWER TO CONTINUE ‘SMART METER’ PROGRAM
July 29, 2014 - 12:00pm
For Release: July 30, 2014
Saskatoon Light & Power will continue to install smart-meters in its customers’ homes.
Earlier today, the Provincial Government ordered SaskPower to remove all of its smart meters installed as part of its smart meter program after a number of burning incidents involving the SaskPower meters occurred.
“Saskatoon Light & Power (SL&P) uses a different brand of smart meter than the ones SaskPower has been ordered to remove,” says Kevin Hudson, Metering and Sustainable Electricity Manager.
“The City-owned power company has been installing AMI meters (smart meters) supplied by Elster Canadian Meter Company since 2008 and we have not heard any reports of problems with the Elster brand meters.”
Over half of the 60,000 SL&P customers already have one of the Elster brand AMI meters, and Saskatoon Light & Power expects to have all its meters replaced by the end of 2017.
