Engage
What We Asked
The City of Saskatoon (City) is designing and piloting programs to reduce and divert organic and recyclable waste. Currently waste sorting in public space and at events in Saskatoon is voluntary, resulting in a large amount of organic and recyclable waste being sent to the landfill. Through the Public Space and Event Waste Diversion project, we launched pilot projects in 2025 to help the community to properly sort their waste. Throughout the project we received feedback on:
- The opportunities and barriers for reducing waste, composting and recycling in public space and at events
- How the City can support reducing waste, composting and recycling in public space and at events
- Your interest in participating in pilots to try out different approaches to reducing waste, recycling and composting in public space and at events.
How You Can Get Involved
From January to October 2025, the City engaged with the community, event organizers and public space operators to help shape the future Public Space and Event Waste Diversion programs. The feedback we received during the pilot projects, along with best practice research from other cities and internal considerations, helped to inform the recommendations that will be presented to City Council later in 2026.
