At approximately 1:10 this morning, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a possible house on fire at 1037 Mahoney Avenue. Fire dispatchers worked with the caller to obtain more information for responding fire crews, identifying that flame could be seen coming from the deck of the house.

Three fire engines, one heavy rescue unit, one aerial ladder truck, one fire investigation unit, and one battalion chief were immediately dispatched for response.

Fire crews arrived on scene in less than four minutes to find a residential bi-level with visible smoke and flames coming from an attached deck. The fire was quickly extinguished using the on-board water supply from the fire engine.

As a precaution, fire crews searched all levels of the house and confirmed there to be no remaining occupants, pets, or further extension of the fire. Ventilation was conducted to clear the house and surrounding area of remaining smoke.

A fire investigator has found the cause of the fire to be accidental in nature as a result of the improper disposal of smoking materials. Damage has been estimated at $10,000. 

Smoking material fires are preventable fires; be sure to properly put it out.

The Saskatoon Fire Department received multiple 911 calls beginning at approximately 6:53 pm reporting a house fire on Whelan Crescent resulting in the dispatch of 3 engine companies, a ladder company, a rescue company and a battalion chief.  The first arriving firefighters discovered two houses involved in fire and another two homes threatened to be exposed to the fire.  A request was made for an additional 2 engine companies and a fire investigator.

Fire Crews advanced hose lines to combat the fire and dedicated addition lines to protect adjacent buildings under threat from the fire.   The majority of fire was brought under control within a half an hour of arriving.  Searches for occupants confirmed no one was inside either house.  A dog was removed from one home, but unfortunately did not survive. 

The fire investigator has determined the fire originated on a rear deck of one house and spread to a neighbouring house.  It is suspected the improper disposal of smoking material in a planter caused this fire.  Estimated damages are $750,000.00.

At approximately 8:09 this morning, the Saskatoon Fire Department was alerted to a motor vehicle collision on 8th Street East at the Circle Drive overpass. 

Two Fire Engines, one Heavy Rescue Unit, and one Battalion Chief were dispatched for response. Upon arrival of the first responding fire crew, it was observed that a single motorcycle had overturned and that extrication would not be required.

The lone male driver of the motorcycle was in need of medical attention and was tended to by Firefighter Paramedics before being transported to hospital for further treatment of what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

Fire crews removed the motorcycle and its debris from the roadway. A tow truck was contacted for collection of the inoperable and damaged motorcycle.

The Saskatoon Fire Department has concluded its involvement in this incident and the scene has been left with the Saskatoon Police Service.

At approximately 9:44 P.M. on Saturday May 18, 2019, The Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a possible kitchen fire at 3134 11 th St W.  The fire department responded with 3 engines, 1 ladder company, 1 rescue company and a battalion chief. 

When crews arrived they found there was no remaining fire as the sprinklers had been activated as a result of a grease fire in the kitchen on the fourth floor of the apartment building.  Fire crews treated one man on scene for minor burns before he was transported to hospital for further treatment.

Crews had to shut down the sprinkler systems and ventilate the building to remove the remaining smoke.

An investigator was called and determined the fire to have been accidental.  Damages are estimated at $40,000.00.

Saskatoon Fire Department crews responded to a reported structure fire shortly after midnight.  Upon arrival crews found a fully involved rear detached garage.The fire was quickly extinguished.  Investigator deemed fire to be accidental, caused by a Chiminea that had holes in the base causing hot embers to fall onto the wooden deck below, start it on fire and spread to the garage.  Damage is estimated at $40 000.00

The Saskatoon Fire Department was called to two fires overnight.  The first was report at midnight indicated a garage on fire at the 1600 block Ave C North.  Dispatched to the scene were three engines, one ladder, one rescue, one battalion chief and one fire investigator.  First arriving firefighters found a garage fully involved in fire.  There has yet to be a cause determined and remains under investigation.  Fire damage is estimated at $40,000.

The second fire was called in to Saskatoon Fire Department via 911 at 2:20 a.m. reporting smoke coming from a house in the 800 block of Ave M South.  Dispatched to the scene were three engines, one ladder, one rescue, one battalion chief and one fire investigator.  The first arriving officer reported flames showing on the south side of a house.  Fire crews advanced hose lines to direct water onto exposed flames.  Upon extinguishment, a fire investigation determined the fire was caused by an overheated air-compressor that had been running continuously causing it to overheat and ignite nearby combustible materials.  Damage is estimated to be $100,000.

Saskatoon Fire Department responds to a grass fire West of Saskatoon.

At 07:39 this evening the Saskatoon Fire Department received several 911 calls reporting a grass fire west of the city close to Highway 7.  An Engine, two Brush Trucks, two Water Tankers and a Battalion Chief were dispatched to the scene.  First arriving crews found two large fires burning close to the train tracks.  Incident command requested a freight train passing through the area be stopped for the safety of the firefighters working on the scene.  The fire crews worked for over two hours to knock down the flames and extinguish hot spots, the train was then allowed to resume its journey to its destination.

There were no injuries reported as a result of this fire.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.

Just before midnight the Saskatoon Fire Department received a call from an alarm company indicating that a Fire Alarm had been activated at the Lawson Heights Mall located at 134 Primrose Drive. 

Three Fire Engines, one Aerial Ladder Truck, one Battalion Chief and a Fire Investigation Unit were dispatched to the incident.

The first arriving apparatus notice water flowing from the building and heard the audible alarm bells sounding. Upon investigation fire crews quickly determined that the water flow was originating from the Urban Trail store front located inside the mall. The ladder company forced entry into the store through an exterior door located at the rear of the business. Fire crews found a small fire that had been extinguished by the buildings sprinkler system. Firefighters remained on scene to perform overhaul duties to ensure the fire had been completely extinguished and carry out salvage operations to help minimize water damage to the adjoining businesses.

There were no injuries as a result of this incident. A Fire Investigator is on scene working to determine a cause of the fire and a damage estimate.

 At 17:30 this afternoon, Saskatoon Fire Department received a report of a structure fire at 423 Avenue Q South. Three Engine Companies, one Ladder Company, one Rescue Unit, and one Battalion Chief responded.

On arrival, the Incident Commander reported smoke coming from the basement suite of a raised bungalow. The family upstairs was evacuated by Fire personnel while simultaneously, another crew entered the basement to attack the fire and complete a primary search for basement occupants. 

The fire was immediately controlled upon entry and the primary search verified no occupants were inside the suite. Crews ensured there was no other fire extension inside the structure and used positive pressure ventilation fans to completely remove remaining smoke and contaminants.

A Fire Investigator is on scene. A cause and damage estimate has not yet been given. There are no reported injuries due to this incident.

On Monday, April 29th, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a mutual aid request from the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency on behalf of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to respond to the area of Kamsack, Saskatchewan for a water recovery operation on the Assiniboine River. The Office of Emergency Management in Saskatoon worked with municipal, provincial, and federal partners to coordinate and initiate response to the area.

The Saskatoon Fire Department's Surface Water Rescue Team mobilized and was deployed at approximately 1:09 this afternoon. Kamsack is located approximately 350 kilometres from Saskatoon. A total of six crew members, equipped with one specialized water rescue craft and one water rescue boat began their search at approximately 6:06 this evening. A significant presence of emergency personnel and community representatives were on scene to support and aid in search efforts.

The search area included a low-head weir with fast-moving and unpredictable water. The Saskatoon Fire Department's specialized water rescue craft has been designed to effectively perform in such conditions while maintaining the safety of the craft's operators. The Surface Water Rescue Team searched along the weir's boil and upriver from the low-head weir with search efforts remaining inconclusive.

The Saskatoon Fire Department is assisting under the command and direction of the RCMP. All requests for information regarding this incident should be directed towards that authority and future updates to the community on the progress of search efforts can be obtained through the RCMP News portal.
