Apartment fire at 1020 Matheson Drive
December 7, 2021 - 9:12 am
At 6:02 a.m. the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) received a report of a fire on the first floor of an apartment building at 1020 Matheson Drive. Three engines, one rescue truck, one ladder and one battalion chief unit were dispatched.
Upon arriving, fire crews observed smoke coming from the main door of the apartment building and also a lower-level suite window. Occupants of the building were evacuating.
Fire crews proceeded with an interior attack and advanced a hose line to apply water to the fire. Firefighters confirmed a small fire in the bedroom of the first-floor suite. Firefighters located the main source of the fire in a closet and extinguished the flames. Meanwhile, another crew continued to assist occupants who were not able to initially self-evacuate.
One occupant from the burned suite was assessed and treated by the ambulance service. The Saskatoon Police Service was also on scene with a van to keep occupants of the apartment building warm.
The fire was contained to one suite and was declared under control at 6:14 a.m. During the salvage and overhaul stage, crews ventilated the building of residual smoke and carbon monoxide. The building was fully vented and occupants were let back into their suites at 6:38 a.m.
SFD’s Fire Investigator deemed the cause of the fire as incendiary and noted the smoke alarms in the burned suite had been tampered with. Fire damage is estimated at $20,000.
SFD would like to remind residents to test their smoke alarms monthly. Tampering or removing life safety devices such as smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms is a criminal offence and can be subject to a fine up to $25,000.

Smoke alarm tampering a rising concern
November 26, 2021 - 1:05 pm
The Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) is advising the public of a concerning trend in smoke alarm tampering.
Between Monday, November 22 and Wednesday, November 24, SFD responded to two separate fires where smoke alarms had been taken down and removed. An additional 10 properties were identified earlier this month with a total of 13 missing smoke alarms.
“We know working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a fire in half. It’s very concerning to see so many properties where the smoke alarms have been tampered with or not installed at all,” says Assistant Chief Yvonne Raymer. “When a fire happens in a home, you may only have seconds to escape. That’s why early detection of a fire is vital and only working smoke alarms can provide those precious seconds.”
Smoke alarms should be installed outside each sleeping area and are most effective when interconnected throughout your home. It is important to test your smoke alarms monthly and change the batteries at least once a year. The entire alarm should be replaced every seven years or sooner if required, according to the manufacturer.
SFD would like to remind residents that tampering or removing life safety devices such as smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms is a criminal offence and can be subject to a fine up to $25,000 for a person held liable of the offence.

Structure Fire - 1900 Block of 22nd Street West
November 25, 2021 - 10:38 am
Saskatoon Fire Department Communications Centre received received multiple 9-1-1 calls for a garage fire at 4:55 a.m. Our first arriving fire engine reported a garage that was fully involved in fire. Incoming firefighters and their officers were assigned tactical duties by the Officer first on scene. A power line was brought down to the ground by the fire and a crew from Saskatoon Light & Power responded. An SFD Safety Officer was assigned to ensure safety on the fire ground. At 5:12 a.m., the garage had been consumed by fire to the point of collapse. Fire crews continued to extinguish the fire. This fire was brought under control at 5:39 a.m.
Dispatched to the scene were a total of 6 front line emergency response apparatus, a Battalion Chief, a Fire Investigator and a service vehicle. Fire crews began packing up hose lines and tools after extinguishment was completed. Equipment that was contaminated by smoke, soot and exposed to gases created by the fire were transported back to station by an SFD service vehicle. Fire crews began cleaning and decontaminating equipment back at the stations.
The scene was turned over to the Fire Investigator at 6:03 a.m. An investigator from the Saskatoon Police Service assisted in the investigation. Our Fire Investigator has determined that the fire originated in the interior of the garage which was reported as not being used for living purposes but household furnishings were identified as being present. Damage to the garage and neighbouring properties is estimated at $25,000. The exact cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. The Fire Investigator will continue to work with the Police Service in this investigation.
No injuries to civilians or firefighters occurred as a result of this fire.
Structure fire in the 900 Block of Avenue L North
November 12, 2021 - 12:50 pm
At 09:35 a.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department received a report of a house fire with smoke and flame showing. Three fire engines, one ladder truck, one rescue truck, the Battalion Chief and a Fire Investigator were dispatched to the scene. First arriving fire crew and their officer reported heavy smoke showing. All incoming fire crews were assigned tactical duties and extinguishment was initiated from the exterior into the interior. Due to an extreme accumulation of items in the yard and the interior of the structure, this posed an extra challenge to firefighters as they advanced hose lines and water onto the fire. The fire was knocked down at 09:46 a.m. while firefighters had to work around extremely congested conditions in order to get to the origin of the fire and complete extinguishment. Searches were conducted to ensure no one was inside the structure in need of evacuation.
No injuries occurred to firefighters or civilians due to this fire.
The Fire Investigator identified many contributing factors to this fire. The utilities were not in service at the time of the fire. An inappropriate and unsafe heat source identified as a hand made furnace in a bedroom caused the fire. The makeshift furnace was constructed of a barrel to allow for items to be burned and inadequately vented through the bedroom window. The amount of items inside the structure contributed to the spread of fire and its challenge in being extinguished. Damage is estimated to be $50, 000 as the fire extended from the bedroom and its window into the roof. Cause of the fire was determined to be accidental.
Due to the extreme amount of materials loitering inside and outside of the structure, the Fire Investigator will be issuing Orders under the Property Maintenance & Nuisance Abatement Bylaw 8175 requiring the removal of items and a separate Order will be issued requiring repairs to the structure due to the fire damage. The house is being closed under the Authority of the Saskatoon Fire Department due to the lack of utilities, fire damage and the extreme accumulation identified.
One occupant is displaced due to this fire and has found alternate accommodations.

Saskatoon Fire Department recognizes November as Fall Prevention Month
November 4, 2021 - 8:00 am
One in three adults over the age of 65 will fall each year. By the time adults reach 85, the ratio becomes 1 in 2. In recognition of Fall Prevention Month, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) will be focussing on its Remembering When program to raise awareness about fall prevention and fall related injuries in older adults.
Remembering When is a National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) designed program that uses nostalgia to promote eight fire safety and eight fall prevention messages. The goal of the program is to help older adults eliminate fire and fall hazards so they can stay in their homes as long as they would like. Through the program, older adults are also taught what to do in the event of a fire and how to get up off the floor if they have fallen and are not hurt.
Last year, SFD responded to 1150 lift assist requests.
“Falls can be caused by a variety of factors and can happen anytime,” says Dori Krahn, Community Relations Coordinator for SFD. “Falls are also preventable. The Remembering When program allows us to connect with older adults, help them identify risks in their home, and provide them with resources to improve their fall prevention efforts. The purpose of the program is to ensure the safety of our older population and help them live healthy, active and independent lives.”
SFD, in partnership with the Saskatoon Council on Aging (SCOA), uses follow-up phone calls, group presentations and home visits through the Remembering When program. This level of personalized fire and fall prevention ensures that each individual is receiving information that is relevant to their specific living situation and lifestyle. To book a home visit, please call: 306-975-7715.

City & partner agencies organize response to unhoused people in the community
November 1, 2021 - 4:50 pm
- Identify the places or ‘camps’ where people are living in makeshift shelters
- Delegate a task force group to the camps
- Talk to the people who are unhoused to build trust
- Offer wrap-around supports: food, mental health and addiction support, access to elders and counselling, COVID testing, and ultimately long-term housing
The Saskatoon Fire Department has this week implemented a proactive emergency operations centre (EOC) to manage life safety and health issues related to those experiencing homelessness with the immediate goal of offering emergency shelter to anyone who is living outdoors.
“We believe there are likely over a hundred people who are without proper shelter in Saskatoon – that is, sleeping in the open or in makeshift shelters – so, we want to help them find safe, healthy and appropriate emergency shelter,” says Assistant Fire Chief Yvonne Raymer.
Raymer says this work has been ongoing but as the weather begins to turn, the situation is growing more emergent. The partner agencies including the Sawêyihtotân (suh-WAY-uh-toe-tahn) community outreach team led by the Saskatoon Tribal Council, the Saskatoon Housing Initiative Partnership (SHIP), Salvation Army, Saskatoon Police Service, and other agencies are working together to achieve four main goals:
"This is about working together as a whole community to support people in accessing emergency shelter – we are working on keeping individuals safe and finding ways to best support them with emergency wrap-around resources within our capacity. Right now, though, we can’t in good conscience allow people to live in the elements as the weather continues to get colder.
"We have learned from experiences in other municipalities that when large encampments happen, those create greater health and safety risks. We have already been called to fires at makeshift shelters. So, of course, we want to find a way around that and help people with viable, dignified options and continue to offer them supports, even if at first they decline," Raymer says.
Community outreach workers who are part of a task force will be at the forefront of this work. The team will work together to connect with those who are houseless in the locations where they are currently finding shelter in parks, natural areas, along the riverbank and other areas in Saskatoon.
The Saskatoon Fire Department recognizes homelessness is a complex issue which requires a whole-community response and it will continue to actively engage all partners in a collaborative process going forward.

For the sixth year, the Saskatoon Fire Department has partnered with the Saskatoon Firefighters Union IAFF 80 and Cowan Imaging Group to bring a pink fire truck to Saskatoon. Engine 13 will be sporting a pink wrap for the entire month of October in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“Breast cancer research is an initiative we’ve supported for many years,” says Deputy Chief Mike Ralston. “Our Fire Department is honoured to show our support to those who have been affected by breast cancer.”
Engine 13 will continue to be an integral part of the Saskatoon Fire Department’s fleet during October. When not in commission, the pink truck can be seen at various locations across Saskatoon.
“This truck not only symbolizes the fight against fires, but also the fight against breast cancer,” says Jay Protz, Union IAFF 80 representative. “We’re proud to raise funds for this important cause, especially knowing the money is helping patients right here at home in Saskatchewan.”
Saskatoon residents are encouraged to make donations to the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan throughout the month of October. Fire Prevention Week October 3-9, 2021
October 1, 2021 - 11:00 am
- A continuous set of three loud beeps, “beep, beep, beep,” means smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1 and stay out.
- A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed.
- All alarms must be replaced after 10 years, or sooner according to manufacturer’s instructions.
- Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.
- Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms meet the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
The Saskatoon Fire Department is teaming up with The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to promote Fire Prevention Week (October 3-9, 2021). This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety” will focus on educating residents about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.
In a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Knowing what to do when an alarm sounds will keep you and your family safe.
“It’s important to learn the different sounds of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. When an alarm makes noise—a beeping sound or a chirping sound—you must take action,” says Yvonne Raymer, Assistant Fire Chief. “Make sure everyone in the home recognizes and understands the sounds of the alarms and knows how to respond. To learn the sounds of your specific smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, test the alarms monthly by following the manufacturer’s instructions that come in the box, or search the brand and model online.”
The Saskatoon Fire Department wants to share safety tips to help you “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety”:
Chief Raymer adds, "Beginning July 1, 2022, carbon monoxide and smoke alarms will be mandatory in all Saskatchewan homes, regardless of the building’s age. Now is a great time to install these alarms if you don't already have them so you have time to plan where they should go and become familiar with how they operate."

Three more engines, an aerial apparatus and the Battalion Chief were dispatched to the property.
SaskEnergy and City of Saskatoon Transit bus were requested to attend. The Fire Investigator was dispatched to the scene. It was identified that the exhaust serving the boiler had been broken on the exterior of the building. Children had been playing around the exhaust. It was reported to the fire crews that they had been hanging off the exhaust pipes which which caused the break at the exterior causing the ventilation to be damaged. This caused the boiler to be exhausted into the building instead of the exterior causing the high levels of carbon monoxide.
SaskEnergy worked with the property owner's to repair the ventilation. Repairs were complete, the boiler was restored and turned back on. SaskEnergy and fire crews took readings to ensure carbon monoxide is no longer being exhausted into the building. Residents were situated in a warm City Bus while repairs were conducted.
SaskEnergy has confirmed at this time that it is safe for residents to return to their suites.

On arrival, smoke was showing from the roof of the garage. The contents inside the garage were extinguished but heat was identified by fire crews in the wall. Identifying the area of heat with their thermal imaging camera, a pump tank was used to fully extinguish the fire. The attic was checked to ensure no fire extension had occurred. A Fire Investigator was dispatched to the incident. After checking the home for carbon monoxide, occupants were allowed back inside. Fire crews returned to station.
The Fire Investigator determined this was an accidental fire. A hot plate was accidentally turned on. Damage is estimated to be $10,000.
