Structure Fire - 3800 Block Diefenbaker Drive

At 7:25 pm on February 4, 2024, Saskatoon Fire Department Communications received a report of a structure fire in the 3800 Block of Diefenbaker Drive. Dispatched were three fire engines, one ladder truck, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief. At 7:30 pm, the first arriving fire crew reported a two story structure fully involved in fire. The incident commander assigned tactical duties to incoming fire crews. An interior attack on the fire was initiated. Utilities were requested to be shut down for scene safety on the fire ground. At 8:16 pm an exterior attack on the fire in the basement was initiated to support extinguishment. Fire Investigator was requested to attend.
Fire was brought under control at 8:47 pm. Fire crews are still on scene at this time.
No injury to occupants or firefighters have occurred as result of this fire at this time.
More information will follow once the Fire Investigator has conducted the cause and origin investigation for the fire.
Structural collapse - 100 Block of Horner Crescent

At 1:42 p.m. on January 31, 2024, the Saskatoon Fire Department Communications Center received notification from the ambulance service to respond for a patient in the 100 Block of Horner Crescent where a floor collapsed. Dispatched to the incident were one fire engine, one ladder truck, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief. While responding, we received further information that there may be two patients with another person needing rescue from the 5th floor.
On arrival, fire crews were advised that all construction personnel were accounted for but needing rescue from upper storeys. Initial information was that concrete slabs were being installed for flooring when it collapsed 5 storeys. Our Heavy Urban Search and Rescue were team were put on standby but not required to respond to the scene. A firefighter paramedic was tied off and put into position to rescue a person on the roof. At 2:38 p.m., the person was rescued from the roof.
Currently, our Battalion Chief and fire crews are working with the owner of the property and safety officers for the construction site. Patient care had been transferred to the ambulance service.
Industrial Fire - 100 block McLeod Avenue

At 5:05 am on January 16, 2024 Saskatoon Fire Department received a call for a possible structure fire on the 100 block of McLeod Avenue. An additional call received from an employee on site stated there was visible flames inside the wall space. Saskatoon Fire Communications Center dispatched to the scene three rescue engines, 1 ladder truck, 1 rescue unit and 1 Battalion Chief.
On arrival crews quickly located the fire that was identified by the caller that was seen through a crack in the walls. Further investigation found that the fire may have possibly spread to the roof of the structure and once roof access was made crews found visible flames.
Due to the size of the structure and the weather conditions, the fire crews are being challenged. The fire crews are dealing with a fire in a difficult to access location, hose lines freezing, slippery conditions, and maintaining the safety of everyone on scene. A fire investigator has been called to attend and an update on the findings will be provided when available.
Update: Commercial fire - 3300 block Fairlight Drive

This is an update and follow up to the fire that occurred in the 3300 block of Fairlight Drive on January 15, 2024.
The Saskatoon Fire Investigator estimates the damage from this fire to be $175,000. No injuries were reported as a result of this fire.
The investigation has been turned over to the Saskatoon Police Service.
Update: Commercial fire - 33rd Street East

This is an update on the two-alarm commercial fire that occurred on 33rd Street East on January 12, 2024.
Saskatoon Fire Department Investigators have deemed the cause of this fire to be accidental.
The fire originated in a piece on machinery on the fourth floor of the structure, a malfunction of the machine created the point of ignition. The fire traveled through the mill process piping and spread to the sixth floor, which sustained considerable damage. The total damage from the fire is still be assessed however the fire investigator estimates that the damage will exceed 5 million dollars.
Commercial fire - 3300 block Fairlight Drive

At 2:54 pm on January 15, 2024, Saskatoon Fire Central Dispatch received a 911 call for a vehicle on fire inside a building in the 3300 block of Fairlight Drive. On arrival crews found heavy black smoke venting from the doors and ventilation openings in the structure. An interior attack was initiated, the fire crews located the fire and began extinguishing by 3:04 pm. Crews deemed the fire to be under control at 3:17 pm. A Saskatoon Fire investigator and a Saskatoon Police Arson Investigator were called to the scene and their investigation is ongoing.
Update: Two-alarm commercial fire – 33rd Street East
January 12, 2024 - 3:30 pm
The Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) has successfully brought the commercial fire at 33rd Street under control.
At 9:33 a.m., SFD received reports of a fire on the fourth floor of a flour mill on 33rd Street East. Two engines, one ladder truck, one rescue truck and the Battalion Chief were dispatched.
The fire crew entered the fourth floor of the building and extinguished a machine that was on fire. Within minutes, the fire had spread to the east side of the building. Crews began attacking the fire from the exterior.
A drone provided by the Saskatoon Police Service was used to assess the roof areas of the flour mill to determine if the flames had spread. The drone confirmed the fire was contained to the lower floors.
Due to adverse weather conditions, a second alarm was called at 10:16 a.m. and another two engines, one ladder truck and Command 9 were dispatched.
The fire reached the sixth floor and SFD used the ladder truck to flow water onto the fire for approximately 30 minutes.
The fire is currently under control. SFD continues to remain on site to ensure the fire is completely extinguished. The weather continues to be a challenge and crews are frequently rotating to maintain safety of the incident and personnel.
Commercial fire – 33rd Street East

At 9:33 a.m. the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) received reports of a fire on the fourth floor of a flour mill on 33rd Street East. SFD crews responded to the incident and discovered fire on the fourth, fifth and sixth floors. 13 fire apparatus are currently dispatched to the scene to support the incident.
SFD asks the public to remain clear of the area to allow fire crews to perform their work.
An update will be provided this afternoon.
House fire - 300 block of Anderson Crescent

At 8:50 a.m. on January 10, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) responded to reports of a house fire occurring in the 300 block of Anderson Crescent.
On arrival, fire crews found the occupant outside with pets. the occupant indicated there were cats still within the home but no other occupants. No smoke or fire showing on arrival.
Saskatoon fire crews entered the home and a offensive attack was launched. A fire was found in the basement and extinguished. The fire was brought under control at 09:13a.m. The pets were all accounted for, with no injuries. A SFD Fire Investigator was called to the scene to conduct a fire scene examination. The fire investigator has completed his examination and identifies the cause of the fire is accidental. The origin of the fire is due to the failure of electronic components of a small electronic toy served with double AA alkaline batteries.
Fire damage is estimated at 150,000 dollars.
Garage Fire - 600 Block of University Drive

At 5:30 a.m. on January 6, 2024, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) received a report of a vegetation fire in the 600 block of University Drive. One fire engine was dispatched to the fire. Responding fire crew reported seeing flames as they crossed the bridge as they approached. The response was upgraded by dispatching additional fire crews in anticipation of this being a structure fire. Two additional fire engines, one ladder truck, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief were dispatched. On arrival, the first arriving fire crew reported a detached single car garage fully involved with a power line on fire.
For scene safety purposes, electrical company was notified to disconnect the service at the pole. Fire crews extinguished the fire defensively. All incoming fire crews were assigned tactical duties. The Battalion Chief requested our Fire Investigator to attend.
Fire crews contained the fire to the garage and electrical power pole. This fire was brought under control at 6:09 a.m. The fire scene was turned over to the Fire Investigator at 7:13 a.m. Cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. The SFD fire investigator is working with the Saskatoon Police Service at this time. Fire originated on the exterior of the garage. Damage is approximated at $35,000. The Fire Investigator has turned the scene back over to the property owner to secure the site.
