CITY ARCHIVES TO DISPLAY FIRST WORLD WAR BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE
October 31, 2014 - 12:00pm
Mayor Don Atchison and City Archivist, Jeff O’Brien, will unveil the First World War Book of Remembrance at the City Archives on Thursday, November 6. The book is a gift to the City from the Military Institute of Saskatoon.
“We are very pleased to have been designated as the permanent custodian of the Book of Remembrance and to be a part of the activities commemorating the First World War, which had a huge effect on Saskatoon,” says O’Brien.
O’Brien says the First World War, waged by Canada in 1914 to1918, required commitment from everyone, not only from those in uniform.
“It required commitment from farmers, those who run cities and those who tended to the machinery of business, industry and government. Without civilians, there can be no soldiers.”
O’Brien says when we remember those who served and died in the Great War, we are also remembering ourselves and the massive effort put forth by every Canadian in supporting the war effort and seeing it to its successful conclusion.
Residents are invited to the City Archives (224 Cardinal Crescent) for the unveiling of the First World War Book of Remembrance on Thursday, November 6th at 5:45 p.m. The book will also be on display in the lobby of City Hall from November 10th to November 14th.
