Repairs to the bridge following yesterday’s fire were completed earlier this afternoon.

Cankerworms Abundant in Saskatoon this Year
June 22, 2023 - 2:00pm
Cankerworms and leafrollers are an annual issue for Saskatoon’s urban forest. The trees may experience heavy defoliation but, unless there are underlying issues, the trees will recover and produce new foliage.
Cankerworms, also known as loopers and inchworms, are found primarily on the leaves of elm, ash, and maple trees. The fall and spring cankerworm species often feed together during June and July. They can be found hanging from silken threads underneath infested trees and can be a nuisance.
Leafrollers feed while concealed within leaves that are rolled or tied together with silk webbing. Ash trees are their preference, but they also attack other tree species. The larvae will feed in mid- to late-June, but the leaves will remain rolled throughout the summer.
Tree banding can be used to deter cankerworms; however, it is not effective against leafrollers. The best time to place bands on trees is from September to May to help prevent the wingless adult female cankerworm moths from climbing host trees to lay their eggs. It is important to remove the bands at the beginning of June because the bands can collect moisture and cause the trunk to rot. Unlike the adult female cankerworm, the female leafrollers have wings and will fly from tree to tree to lay their eggs.
The City does not control cankerworms, forest tent caterpillars, or leafrollers as they typically do not impact the health of the trees they attack. Homeowners interested in controlling them on their own trees should contact a horticulture professional for advice. Update: University Bridge repairs underway following fire response
June 22, 2023 - 11:30am
- From the east side of the bridge, drivers are encouraged to take Clarence Avenue to 12th Street and use the Broadway Bridge or use 8th street and use the Traffic Bridge or Senator Sid Buckwold Bridge.
- From the west side of the bridge, drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes downtown and to use the Broadway Bridge, Traffic Bridge, or Senator Sid Buckwold Bridge.
The University Bridge remains closed to motorists as crews work to repair core holes that were drilled in the bridge decking to aid the Saskatoon Fire Department in its response to a fire underneath the structure on June 21.
Fire crews cleared the scene and there is no longer a fire risk on the bridge. City crews have assessed the bridge and there does not appear to be any structural damage. It is anticipated that the bridge will be reopened by late-afternoon today, barring any delays or unforeseen circumstances. Walkways on the bridge have been reopened for pedestrians and cyclists.
Spadina Crescent, below the bridge between 24th and 25th streets, has now been reopened fully for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
For your safety and ours, all members of the public are asked to please stay away from unauthorized areas on any bridge structure and to contact Saskatoon Police Service if they witness any unauthorized access.
Until the bridge is fully reopened, we ask drivers to reroute their commute:
This closure impacts transit service on Routes 4, 43, 44, 45, 46 and 6. Transit service alerts and real-time bus information are available on third-party apps like Transit and Google Maps Transit on desktop.
Please allow for additional travel time to reach destinations, and remember to respect all detour signage.
