FUNDING INCREASE MEANS MORE SIDEWALK REPAIRS & REPLACEMENT
July 23, 2014 - 6:00pm
An increase in funding to the City of Saskatoon’s 2014 Sidewalk Rehabilitation program will see approximately 6 kilometres of sidewalk repaired this year, up from a total of 1.7 kilometres in 2013.
“New funding for sidewalk rehabilitation will allow us to better address deteriorating and cracked sidewalks,” says Mike Gutek, Director of Major Projects. “This year our priority is repairing sidewalks in conjunction with roadway rehabilitation in order to reduce the overall impact to motorists and pedestrians.”
Two major rehabilitation projects have been done: one along Assiniboine Drive between Warman Road and Ravine Drive in River Heights and another on Eastlake Avenue between 10th Street and 12th Street in Nutana.
The City is spending $1.8 million which is nearly four times as much in as 2013. Future planned funding increases will enable the City to address more of the Saskatoon sidewalk network. On average, a city block is 165 m, which means approximately 36 city blocks of a single path of sidewalk can be replaced in 2014.
“With a properly funded rehabilitation program, we can improve the condition of sidewalks with patches, crack filling and replacements,” Gutek says. “Residents will start to see sidewalk conditions improve over the next few years as funding levels increase.”
Residents can view locations of the City’s sidewalk rehabilitation program on the new Road Restrictions and Construction Projects interactive map found on saskatoon.ca under Check this Out! or click on Building Better Roads for more program details.

VEHICLE HEIGHT RESTRICTIONS AT 2ND AVENUE SOUTH ROUNDABOUT AT RIVER LANDING
July 22, 2014 - 6:00pm
For Immediate
Release: July 23, 2014
Beginning on Thursday, July 24, a vehicle height restriction will be in place at the 2nd Avenue South roundabout at River Landing to allow for construction of the new Remai Art Gallery building.
As part of the art gallery’s design some of the building will overhang the 2nd Avenue South roundabout and will require a vehicle height restriction of 4.42 metres (14 feet-6 inches).
The roundabout will be temporarily closed from 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 24, while crews construct the overhang structure. The road is expected to reopen to height-restricted traffic by Friday, July 25, weather permitting and barring any unforeseen circumstances.
Signage is posted on 2nd Avenue and Spadina Crescent to inform drivers of the height restrictions.
Slow down, pay attention and respect work zones. Watch for pedestrians and work crews, and for everyone’s safety, please obey all detours, signs and barriers.
