Preparing for the spring melt
February 26, 2025 - 12:30pm
As Saskatoon transitions into spring, City crews are proactively managing the melt by clearing snow and ice from priority drainage routes and known problem areas. While some temporary pooling is expected, crews are prepared to respond to drainage concerns as needed.
How Residents Can Help
If you notice significant water pooling or a blocked catch basin, check if it's covered by snow or ice. Clearing it, if safe to do so, can help water drain more efficiently. If the issue persists, report it to the Customer Care Centre at 306-975-2476 or customercare@saskatoon.ca to ensure it is properly categorized and prioritized for response.
What to Expect
As temperatures rise, standing water may become more noticeable, particularly in areas with heavy snow accumulation. Crews will inspect and prioritize emergency flooding locations that pose a risk to property, major roadways, and pedestrian access, aiming to address these within the same day.
Non-emergency pooling—such as water collecting on residential streets that does not impact traffic—may take several days to resolve as temperatures fluctuate and melting continues.
Back Lanes
Gravel back lanes can become muddy and uneven as the ground thaws. While it may seem like they need immediate grading after the snow melts, heavy equipment cannot be used until the lanes have dried enough to prevent further damage. Crews will begin grading operations as soon as surface conditions allow, ensuring all back lanes are addressed as part of the regular spring maintenance cycle.
Potholes & Utility Cuts
As snow melts, water seeps into road cracks, leading to soft gravel utility cuts where a utility company has excavated the road for a repair, and potholes. Crews are maintaining utility cuts and performing temporary cold-mix repairs on high-priority streets, with permanent hot-mix asphalt repairs beginning in mid to late April when hot-mix becomes available from suppliers. Residents can report potholes via the Customer Care Centre or the Report-a-Pothole tool at saskatoon.ca/potholes.
Street Sweeping
While snow-clearing equipment remains on standby for any late-season storms, spring pre-sweeping is expected to begin in mid-April, starting with Priority streets and Business Improvement Districts. Removing debris and sand early helps minimize dust and prepares streets for full sweeping operations later in the season.

City-wide street clearing update
February 25, 2025 - 2:30pm
-
Snow is being stored in parking lanes, with efforts to maintain as much street width as possible.
-
Some streets will be narrowed due to snow storage, but roads will remain passable.
-
Snow removal is limited to select narrow streets where additional space is needed for mobility.
-
Overnight snow removal on priority streets will continue.
-
Crews are working to keep catch basins open where possible, prioritizing flood-prone areas to improve drainage.
Crews have been working day and night clearing snow from residential and industrial streets across the city, with 30 of Saskatoon’s 65 neighbourhoods completed as of Tuesday morning. The goal remains to reduce the six to seven inches (15 to 18 cm) of compacted snow and ice on streets to below four inches (10 cm or less), helping to prevent severe rutting and mobility challenges as temperatures rise.
With warmer weather continuing this week, graders have been able to cut through more snow and ice pack, improving road conditions, and ensuring long-term mobility as we approach spring.
What you should expect:
Residents are encouraged to move vehicles off-street where possible to support effective clearing.
To view the residential street clearing schedule, visit saskatoon.ca/snow.
The warmer weather is also causing water pooling on some streets and in back lanes. If safe to do so, clear catch basins blocked by ice or snow to help drainage, or contact the City’s Customer Care Centre at 306-975-2476. Avoid driving through puddles, as they may also be hiding a pothole. Please report potholes that have formed as a result of the snow melt through the Report a Pothole map.
Residents are reminded to keep an eye on their own properties. Ensuring that water can drain away from your home, clearing any blocked drainage paths, and working with neighbours to direct meltwater safely can all help prevent issues. For more information and tips for improving drainage visit saskatoon.ca/springmelt.
City named one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for 2025
February 25, 2025 - 7:00am
The City of Saskatoon is proud to announce its recognition as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for 2025. This honour reflects the City's ongoing commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace.
"At the City, we want our employee population to reflect the residents that we serve every day and have our community see themselves in our organization. Every year we are improving, and we remain committed to creating a workplace where everyone can thrive," says Chelsey Mack, Director of HR Shared Services.
The City’s diversity and inclusiveness initiatives are wide-ranging and ongoing from reaching out to community through career fairs and recruitment presentations, to hosting a Reconciliation Town Hall for employees where a smudging ceremony was held in council chambers for the first time.
The City also values the essential connection between mental wellness and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. “We are committed to fostering a workplace where everyone feels empowered to be their authentic selves, free from the need to hide any part of their identity,” says Mack.
Canada's Best Diversity Employers recognizes employers across Canada that have exceptional workplace diversity and inclusiveness programs. This competition recognizes successful diversity initiatives in a variety of areas, including programs for employees from five groups: (a) women; (b) members of visible minorities; (c) persons with disabilities; (d) Indigenous peoples; and (e) lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) peoples.
Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2025 are published and distributed online today in The Globe and Mail and on Eluta.ca. The City has now been honoured with this award for the tenth time.

City-wide residential and industrial street snow clearing beginning this weekend
February 21, 2025 - 9:00am
The City of Saskatoon is taking a proactive approach to prevent severe ice and snow rutting on residential and industrial streets during the spring melt by launching a city-wide snow clearing of these streets, starting this weekend. As spring approaches, the warmer temperatures can result in melting during the day and freezing overnight, and combined with the current snowpack on streets, this creates potential conditions for severe ruts and mobility challenges.
To prevent deep ruts from forming, crews will begin blading all residential and industrial streets throughout the day and night, starting in the outer areas and core of the City, maximizing operational efficiency and working their way through the neighbourhoods . Work is expected to take up to a week, with some final cleanup needing more time to complete.
Graders will clear packed snow from the streets, storing it in the parking lane while avoiding piling snow on catch basins whenever feasible for the upcoming spring melt. Residents are encouraged to move vehicles off-street where possible to allow for more effective clearing. On select narrow streets, where snow storage is no longer possible, crews may need to remove snow after blading.
While snow clearing takes place day and night on residential and industrial streets, overnight snow removal on priority streets will continue. Some streets may be temporarily narrowed as snow piles grow, but this work will keep roads safe and passable.
More details will be posted at saskatoon.ca/snow as they become available.

City celebrates Civic Internship Program graduates
February 13, 2025 - 4:00pm
The City of Saskatoon, in partnership with the Saskatchewan Intercultural Association, the Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF), the Graham Mitchell Foundation through the Urban Alliance on Race Relations and Nutrien, hosted a special event today to celebrate the graduates of the Civic Internship Program.
The unique leadership development program started October 2024 and was designed to provide mentorship, learning and career-building opportunities for participants from equity-deserving communities.
"As mayor, I am committed to fostering opportunities like this internship—programs that connect newcomers with experienced leaders in our community. When we provide all citizens with the chance to develop and apply their skills, we strengthen our city and ensure a brighter future for everyone," says Mayor Cynthia Block.
The program consisted of two critical components: networking with contacts at decision-making levels and working on a single project/report based on insights gained from those meetings. The work resulted in a final report “Bridging the Gap - Enhancing Newcomer Employment and Workforce Diversity in Saskatoon.”
“When people from different backgrounds get involved in local decisions, we create stronger, more fair communities for everyone,” says Mohammed Hashim, CRRF Chief Executive Officer. “We’re honoured to have supported the City of Saskatoon’s first Civic Internship graduates, and we look forward to seeing them reap the fruits of their labour.”
Through this program, participants had the opportunity to work directly with the Mayor, City Councillors, senior City Administration and community leaders, gaining insights into municipal governance and its connection to community development. Foundational to the program was the history of Indigenous peoples including the residential school system, the 60s Scoop and MMIWG2S.*
"Participating in the City of Saskatoon Internship Program was a transformative experience for me as a newcomer.” graduate Muna Jibreal says. “It opened doors to understanding the City's operations, connecting with the community, and finding my place in Saskatoon's vibrant landscape."

Experience the fun and benefits of winter cycling during Winter BYXE Week
February 12, 2025 - 2:00pm
Winter BYXE Week will take place February 15 - 23, 2025. Many activities and events are planned throughout the week, including Bike to Work Day on Thursday, February 20. Local advocacy group, Saskatoon Cycles, is coordinating the events in partnership with the City of Saskatoon, including a BYXE Week scavenger hunt and photo contest.
“Riding a bike is great for physical and mental health; regular exercise leaves you feeling refreshed, energized and alert,” says Nathalie Baudais, Transportation Engineering Manager.
“Don’t limit your cycling adventures to warm weather seasons. Add winter cycling to your list of must-do winter activities like skating, sledding, skiing and snowshoeing. It's a convenient and low-cost form of everyday transportation that benefits Saskatoon by decreasing traffic congestion, noise and air pollution.”
BYXE Week is a great time to explore Saskatoon. Visit saskatoon.ca/byxe for bike routes and safety tips.
Bike to Work Day will be held on Thursday, February 20. Commuter Stations, sponsored by local organizations and businesses, will be serving refreshments and snacks for people on bikes during their morning and afternoon commutes. Visit saskatooncycles.org/winter-byxe for a list station locations and times.
This initiative underscores the joy of biking, promoting good health, saving money and contributing to environmental sustainability.
If you live too far away to ride your bike, consider taking Saskatoon Transit part of the way. All buses are equipped with front bike racks that are free and easy to use. Plan your trip using the Transit app.
For detailed information and event updates, residents can visit saskatooncycles.org/winter-byxe and join our Facebook Event for updates!

Crews mobilizing for priority road cleanup
February 6, 2025 - 6:50am
-
Priority 1 streets (Circle Dr and streets with three+ lanes each way like Idylwyld Dr, 22nd St and College Dr.) will be cleared first, followed by Priority 2 streets (Double-lane streets like Clarence Ave, McKercher Dr and Millar Ave.) and Priority 3 streets (These streets take you through your neighbourhood like Louise Ave, Howell Ave and Main St)
The City of Saskatoon has declared a snow event following 11cm snowfall over the last 2 days. City crews and contractor graders are now mobilized to clear all priority streets within the next 72 hours.
What this means for residents:
Snow removal on priority streets has now been postponed until later next week to allow crews to focus on clearing fresh snowfall and maintaining safe road conditions.
Today, there will be 12 sanders, 26 graders, and 7 plows working to maintain City streets. Residents are urged to use caution and be prepared for slippery roads, snow ridges, and potentially limited visibility. Watch for blue and amber flashing lights on snow maintenance equipment and give operators plenty of space to work.

City named one of Saskatchewan’s Top Employers for 2025
February 4, 2025 - 8:00am
The City of Saskatoon is proud to announce its recognition as one of Saskatchewan’s Top Employers for 2025. This honour reflects the City's commitment to fostering a supportive and dynamic workplace that prioritizes employees' well-being and professional growth.
"We are proud to be acknowledged as one of Saskatchewan’s Top Employers for 2025. Our employees are at the heart of our success, and this award is a reflection of their hard work," says Chelsey Mack, Director of HR Shared Services. "Our focus on mental health and our Corporate Value of Safety in all that we do has played a key role in earning this honour, and we will continue to prioritize these areas."
The City of Saskatoon was evaluated on eight key criteria, the same used for Canada’s Top 100 Employer’s competition: physical workplace; work atmosphere and social; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement.
The City views its employees as its greatest assets and places a strong emphasis on mental health and well-being. “We strive to provide an environment where everyone feels safe, valued, respected, and appreciated for the work they do,” Mack says.
The City offers a range of benefits to promote both physical and mental well-being, including discounted access to city leisure facilities and programs, on-site noon-hour yoga programs, as well as mental health training.
Employers are compared with other organizations in their field to determine which ones offer the most progressive and forward-thinking programs. The City has now been honoured with this award for the tenth time.
Saskatchewan’s 2025 Top Employers are highlighted in today’s online Saskatoon StarPhoenix and Regina Leader-Post.

City crews prepared for weekend snow, blowing snow
January 31, 2025 - 1:28pm
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a Blowing Snow Advisory for Saskatoon and is currently forecasting as much as 15 cm of snow over a 36-hour period, beginning this afternoon. This may cause reduced visibility and mobility on roadways, and City crews are prepared to respond.
If conditions warrant, the City may declare a snow event (when more than 5 cm of snow falls). This would activate contractor graders to assist in clearing all priority streets within 72 hours.
Crews will closely monitor road conditions and address snow and ice along priority streets and busy intersections. However, strong winds may blow sand and salt off treated surfaces, potentially leading to icy spots as temperatures drop.
When approaching road maintenance equipment such as graders and snowplows with blue and amber flashing lights, give operators plenty of space to work safely.
