Ride with Transit to the fun at the Saskatoon EX

August 2, 2024 - 3:30pm

TC24-10228
August 2, 2024 - 3:30 pm

Saskatoon Transit has again partnered with the Saskatoon EX to offer free Transit service for Superpass holders to Prarieland Park from August 6 to 11. Riders looking to take the bus simply need to show the bus operator their Superpass or wristband when boarding for a free ride.

Children 10 and under ride free on Wednesday, August 7, and older adults (65+) ride free on Thursday, August 8, without a Superpass.

Service on Sunday night will be extended with three special service routes from the Exhibition loop on the west side of Lorne Avenue, just south of Ruth Street. The additional service on Sunday night allows people to leave the event even after regular service is over. Regular fares apply ($3.00 per trip) and can be purchased on mobile phones using the TGo or transit app. Transfers and passes are also accepted. Sunday night service will not be visible on trip planning apps.

  • Bus #1 – to Downtown & Lawson Mall at 9:30pm, 10:15pm, 11 pm & 11:45pm
  • Bus #2 – to Market Mall, Centre Mall & University Heights at 9:45pm, 10:30pm & 11:15pm
  • Bus #3 – to Confederation & Downtown at 9:15pm, 10 pm, 10:45pm & 11:30pm

Skip the parking fees and traffic jams by taking Saskatoon Transit. Plan trips to the Saskatoon Ex, in the real-time mobile app Transit or Google Maps Transit. Multi-modal options are available in the Transit app to seamlessly integrate trips with active transportation, OnDemand Transit, riide or Uber using the Transit+ feature. 2025 is the next reassessment year: important survey for all property owners is now open

August 1, 2024 - 6:00am

CF24-10224
August 1, 2024 - 6:00 am

The next legislated reassessment of all property types will take place in 2025. The City is now asking all property owners for feedback on:

  • The property tax phase-in options the City could apply: no phase-in, 2-year, or 4-year
phase-in for the next property reassessment cycle beginning 2025.
  • property owners’ feedback on the benefits, concerns and/or preferences for the phase-in process and how it will be conducted.
  • property owners’ preferred communication methods to receive reassessment information from the City of Saskatoon in 2025 and going forward.

Property owners, we look forward to hearing your preferences and feedback via this 5-7 minute Survey. For additional background information on this engagement survey please visit saskatoon.ca/engage/property-tax-phase

The City’s Phase-in Options survey will be open for all property owners in Saskatoon from Thursday, August 1 until Friday, August 30, 2024.

Background Information

The next legislated reassessment of all property types in Saskatchewan will take place in 2025. Reassessment is undertaken every four years to determine an updated market value for your property. Your property’s 2025 reassessed value will be used, along with the City’s budgeting requirements and tax policy, to calculate your property tax for the next four years, 2025–2028.

The Cities Act does not allow the City to change the current 4-year reassessment cycle however, the City can determine its own tax policies for all property classes (residential, commercial, multi-residential, etc.) in Saskatoon. The City has the authority to make the decision on what are called phase-in options.

When there is a change to a property owner’s property tax because of their property’s new reassessed value, the dollar amount change in property tax owed can be phased-in over two or four years before the next reassessment year. There is also an option for no phase-in use.

Helpful Information/Resources

  • A Guide to Property Assessment & Tax Policy: Roles and Responsibilities
  • Comparative Use of Phase-in Over the Last Three Legislated Assessment Cycles
  • How Phase-in Options Work if You Have a Property Tax Increase or Decrease
  • Phase-in by the Numbers: Examples of No Phase-in, 2-year Phase-in, 4-year Phase-in

Potential blue-green algae identified at Briarwood Pond: residents advised to avoid water use.

July 29, 2024 - 4:15pm

UE24-10214
July 29, 2024 - 4:15 pm

During routine monitoring of storm water ponds, the City of Saskatoon has identified a potential blue-green algae bloom at Briarwood Pond in Briarwood. Blue-green algae, also known as Cyanobacteria, is a bacteria that can be harmful to humans and animals.

Out of an abundance of caution, all recreational water activities are strictly prohibited until further notice. Signage is being produced and will be placed around the pond to inform visitors of potential dangers.

Residents with pets also are advised to completely avoid the pond. When ingested, water with blue-green algae can cause sickness and/or death in animals depending on the level of toxicity.

Health Precautions:

  • Symptoms: Contact with or ingestion of blue-green algae toxins can cause symptoms such as skin irritation, nausea, vomiting, and respiratory distress.
  • Emergency: If you or your pets experience any symptoms after contact with the water, seek medical or veterinary attention immediately.

Water samples will be collected and tested this week. The City will provide updates as they become available. Your cooperation in adhering to these safety measures is greatly appreciated.

Visit Health Canada to learn about the risks of cyanobacteria and their toxins, and how to keep yourself safe.

New battery-electric buses charge into Saskatoon Transit fleet

July 25, 2024 - 1:00pm

TC24-10163
July 25, 2024 - 1:00 pm

Saskatoon Transit is excited to announce the addition of two new Nova LFSe+ battery-electric buses to its public transit fleet, the first in Saskatchewan. This marks a significant milestone in the City of Saskatoon’s commitment to sustainable public transportation and environmental leadership.

Saskatoon Transit piloted a battery-electric bus over a 12-month period beginning in July 2020. This pilot project aimed to evaluate the performance and feasibility of battery-electric buses in Saskatoon’s climate, providing key data to inform future investments in battery-electric buses.

Building on the pilot project's success, City Council approved an initial investment in battery-electric buses in December 2021 as part of the broader $115.4 million revised 2023-2031 fleet renewal strategy.

“This is an exciting step toward building a transit fleet that meets current and future ridership demands and our long-term sustainability goals,” says Michael Moellenbeck, Director of Saskatoon Transit.

Transitioning to battery-electric buses is progress towards meeting the City’s targets outlined in the Low Emissions Community Plan and Climate Action Plan, which include target emission reductions of 55,000 tonnes CO2e by 2050 and an increase in transit trips of 5% by 2030 and 10% by 2050.

"Access to safe and efficient public transportation is an effective way to cut greenhouse gas emissions, and these battery-electric buses are an example of how we can reach environmental targets and provide a cleaner option for Saskatoon,” Moellenbeck says.

Watch for a new battery-electric bus on a nearby route. Experience the benefits firsthand as Saskatoon Transit drives towards a greener, more efficient public transportation network.

Saskatoon Transit employee videos deliver messages asking for respect and understanding from customers

July 23, 2024 - 11:02am

TC24-10189
July 23, 2024 - 11:02 am

Saskatoon Transit and Amalgamated Transit Union Local 615 released videos featuring frontline employees sharing their experience working in public transit and a message for residents and customers. When people watch their stories, we hope they will recognize them as individuals who deserve empathy and respect so they can do their jobs and get home safely at the end of their day.

Bus operators, supervisors and customer service employees have been exposed to more aggressive and violent incidents since the spring. Every employee deserves to feel safe at work and Saskatoon Transit is actively taking measures to provide a safe environment for frontline employees and customers.

The campaign is one of the initiatives in Saskatoon Transit’s frontline employee and customer safety plan that was rolled out in mid-June to reduce negative interactions for our frontline employees and customers.

The series includes Saskatoon Transit bus operators Stevie and David, customer service representative Manisha and operations supervisor Noureddine. Watch the videos at transit.saskatoon.ca/TransitSafety.

Next phase of College Drive project starts Sunday; Lane restrictions between Wiggins Avenue and Cumberland Avenue

July 18, 2024 - 2:00pm

TC24-10184
July 18, 2024 - 2:00 pm

The water main maintenance and replacement project on College Drive is progressing to the next phase of construction. On Sunday, July 21, the current construction zone will be cleared, and a new one will be set up further east between Wiggins Avenue and Cumberland Avenue.

Two-way traffic will be maintained, with two lanes for westbound traffic and one lane for eastbound traffic through the construction zone. Eastbound traffic will move into the westbound median lane. Westbound traffic will be unable to turn left onto Wiggins Avenue during this phase.

Pedestrians may be redirected to cross College Drive at alternate locations. In the event of Saskatoon Transit impacts due to construction, Transit service alerts and real-time bus information are available on third-party apps like Transit and Google Maps Transit.

The College Drive water main maintenance and replacement project has been underway since May and is expected to wrap up in October. Most of the work has been water main maintenance, but at this location, replacements are required.

Work zones are clearly marked with orange signs and pylons. Drivers are asked to slow down, pay attention, and watch for workers. Where merging is necessary, use all available lanes until the merge point. Then, take turns moving through the work zone.

For more information on this project and other road related construction this summer, visit saskatoon.ca/construction.

Extreme Heat Emergency Response Plan: Level II activated July 18

July 18, 2024 - 8:30am

FI24-10183
July 18, 2024 - 8:30 am

In anticipation of higher than normal temperatures this week, the Saskatoon Emergency Management Organization (EMO) will activate the Saskatoon Extreme Heat and Air Quality Emergency Response Plan from Thursday, July 18 to Tuesday, July 23 to support residents in Saskatoon, especially those vulnerable to the heat.

The Saskatoon Extreme Heat and Air Quality Emergency Response Plan is a coordinated response that provides residents with access to cooling locations, outreach services, wellness checks and water distribution during extreme heat. Individuals and families experiencing distress from the heat can visit any of the designated cool-down locations throughout the city. Partner organizations will also distribute water to vulnerable residents and have access to misting tents to provide another way to cool down.

Extreme Heat can cause serious negative health impacts ranging from dehydration and heat exhaustion to heat stroke and potentially death. Extreme heat can be especially dangerous for individuals who live in a residence without air conditioning or a way to cool the home, are older adults, and who also have re-existing health conditions. Residents can help those most vulnerable to this extreme and prolonged heat by checking on family, friends and neighbours, sharing the list of cool-down locations and by alerting emergency services if they see someone in distress due to the extreme heat.

In an emergency, call 911 immediately.

Other considerations during days of extreme heat:

Spray Pads

All spray pad hours will be extended to 10:00 p.m. during the Extreme Heat and Air Quality Emergency Response Plan activation. Spray pads are open daily at 10:00 a.m. Visit saskatoon.ca/spraypads for a list of spray pad locations.

River Safety

Although the South Saskatchewan River may provide a tempting option to cool down on hot days, EMO reminds residents that the river is unpredictable and swimming in the river is prohibited. The river has many hazards including changing currents and an unstable bottom.

Pet Wellness

On warm summer days, it’s important to keep your pets safe and comfortable. Considerations include:

  • Ensuring your pet has plenty of fresh water to drink
  • Monitoring your pet for signs of heat stress such as rapid panting
  • Never leaving pets in parked cars for any amount of time
  • Offering your pet a means to cool down such as a wading pool or damp towel

For more information on how to keep your pet safe this summer, contact your local veterinarian.

Working Safe

As the humidex rises, those who work outdoors are encouraged to take necessary actions including:

  • Drink extra water,
  • Increase breaks out of the sun
  • Modify work duties to prevent heat illness

For safety tips and guidelines for employees working in hot conditions, visit the Government of Saskatchewan’s Working Outdoors page.

Transit Safe Bus Program

As always, Saskatoon Transit offers the Safe Bus Program designed to assist anyone, of any age, that needs immediate shelter or needs to contact emergency services. If you need help, simply and safely flag down a bus or go to a parked bus. Transit operators can contact emergency services directly through the on-bus radio system and will give the person in need a safe place to wait.

Smart Yard and Garden Watering

During heat waves, there is increased water usage. The City encourages residents to be water wise by watering your lawn and trees early in the morning and skip windy days to minimize evaporation. Smart watering helps the environment and can save you money during hot summer months. Follow these quick lawn care tips to be more efficient with your water and learn more ways to be water wise.

For more information about the Saskatoon Extreme Heat and Air Quality Emergency Response Plan and how to stay safe during extreme heat, visit saskatoon.ca/heat.
