Saskatoon Fire Department recommended to take on Community Support Program in city centre BIDs
June 2, 2023 - 10:15am
City Administration recommends oversight of the Community Support Program (CSP) be transferred to the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) to provide better coordination and integration to address community safety and well-being.
“Much has changed since the Community Support Program rolled out,” says Assistant Chief Yvonne Raymer. “That is why we are recommending a whole-community team approach to deal with safety and well-being in our city core and elsewhere. With this approach, we will be able to maintain the current level of support in the core business districts and enhance our response with Transit support workers and partnerships with specially trained police officers.”
For several years, the Downtown Saskatoon Business Improvement District (BID) has administrated the CSP, which provides uniform patrols within the boundaries of the three city centre BIDs of Downtown, Riversdale, and Broadway.
An information report will be presented to City Council’s Standing Policy Committee on Planning, Development and Community Services at its June 7 regular meeting. The report notes that with the current agreement with the Downtown BID set to expire, SFD recognized that greater capacity and collaboration with other public safety initiatives already underway is required to address the needs of those requiring supports in Saskatoon. Such an arrangement would also allow for better information or data sharing so the teams can develop evidence-based responses and solutions for social distress in our community.
Assistant Chief Raymer notes the SFD – through various initiatives – has already worked to gain trust and build relationships with the most vulnerable in Saskatoon.
“Through discussions with the BIDs, it was identified that transitioning operations of the CSP to the SFD, beginning in 2024, may be a suitable option, particularly given that SFD plays a significant role in response and outreach for those in need. In line with this view, we very recently began a pilot Task Force of Saskatoon Police Service Alternative Response Officers (ARO) and SFD Fire Inspectors, which we believe has the team approach that we think will be an effective community safety model.”
Administration will continue to explore the transition of the oversight of the CSP to the SFD, which will include engagement with community partners such as the Saskatoon Police Service, the Street Activity Subcommittee and the Downtown Saskatoon, Riversdale, and Broadway BIDs.
The review will also include participation from Saskatoon Transit. At its regular meeting on May 31, City Council approved a recommendation to explore a transit support workers program using a “One City” approach to address the need identified for targeted safety support services.
A subsequent report on the transition of the CSP will be brought forward in advance of the 2024-2025 Multi-Year Business Plan and Budget.

Application for Seasonal Commercial Enterprise in Parks is Now Open
June 1, 2023 - 11:00am
Are you interested in operating a Seasonal Commercial Enterprise in a Saskatoon park from November 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024? The City is now accepting applications for the Winter 2023-24 season from those wishing to operate a Seasonal Commercial Enterprise that supports sport, recreation and/or cultural events or opportunities.
The deadline for applications is August 15, 2023. Application packages are available at saskatoon.ca/sce or by emailing sce@saskatoon.ca.
The City will meet with the Adjudication Committee to review applications and recommend who will receive approval for a permit to operate a Seasonal Commercial Enterprise in a park. Evaluation is based on criteria as per the Seasonal Commercial Enterprise in Parks Policy No. C10-026.
Once the application has been approved and all required documentation received by the City, a permit and business license will be issued by the City’s Planning and Development Department. Permit costs range from $600 (not-for-profit) to $1,800 (for profit) annually; the fee for a new business license is $125.

National Indigenous History Month offers opportunities to learn, engage in Reconciliation
June 1, 2023 - 9:15am
Each June, we celebrate National Indigenous History Month to honour the history, heritage and diversity of Indigenous people. It's also an opportunity to recognize the strength of present-day Indigenous people and their communities.
There are a number of activities happening around Saskatoon during the month of June that present opportunities to learn and get involved. A listing of just some of these is available at saskatoon.ca/Indigenous. Residents are also invited to visit Civic Square to see the raised Reconciliation Flag and reflect on its significance—it will remain raised until June 5.
National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21): The Rock Your Roots Walk for Reconciliation that formerly took place on June 21 has been moved to September 30—the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation. On June 21, the Saskatoon Indian & Métis Friendship Centre (SIMFC) will host a Community Celebration in Victoria Park between 10:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The City of Saskatoon will be participating in this event, which is open to all.
Outdoor pools open for the season beginning Tuesday, June 6, 2023
June 1, 2023 - 9:00am
- Riversdale Pool (822 Ave H S) on Tuesday, June 6
- Lathey Pool (815 Taylor St E) on Wednesday, June 7
- Mayfair Pool (1025 Ave F N) on Tuesday, June 13
- George Ward Pool (1915 5th St E) on Monday, June 19
Make a splash this summer at the City of Saskatoon’s four outdoor pools! The outdoor pools open for the season on the following dates:
The City is pleased to announce new waterslides have been installed at Lathey and Riversdale pools in time for the 2023 season. Both pools have unique features and the replacement waterslides have been designed to suit the functional layouts at each facility. Lathey’s new run-out design is the most notable change. Like the slides at Mayfair and Shaw pools, it ends at the base of the slide rather than splashing into the pool, offering patrons ease of access and exit.
A general admission provides drop-in access to public, lane, parent and tot, family swims and aqua fitness classes. Available again for the summer are the popular outdoor pool bulk tickets. Purchasing a pack of 10 outdoor pool passes provides a 20 per cent discount off regular general admission rates. Children under six years of age are admitted free to outdoor pools when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Visit saskatoon.ca/leisureonline for drop-in schedules.
Swimming lessons are offered at the outdoor pools in July and August. Class options are listed in the Spring /Summer Leisure Guide, which is available for pick up at any leisure facility or viewable online at saskatoon.ca/leisureguide. Registrations are accepted online by logging into your Leisure Online account or calling or visiting any Leisure Centre.
Please be aware that outdoor pools will be cleared immediately if lightning occurs and will close if the temperature is 14 degrees or lower, or during steady rain conditions. Patrons are encouraged to sign up for Service Alerts at saskatoon.ca/servicealerts or follow @YXEServiceAlerts on Twitter for immediate updates.
