Today, September 25, 2020, the Saskatoon Fire Department is proud to welcome 12 new firefighter-paramedics to begin serving the residents and visitors of Saskatoon and surrounding area.

“From diverse backgrounds, each recruit has demonstrated great initiative in preparing themselves to proudly serve with the Saskatoon Fire Department,” says Fire Chief Morgan Hackl. “Although our celebration will be smaller and physically distant this year, it is important to recognize their success.”

All 12 of the firefighter-paramedics are certified to the level of Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) and are licensed through the Saskatchewan College of Paramedics. As firefighter-paramedics, they are trained, prepared, and experienced in operating effectively on high-hazard emergency scenes.

These firefighter-paramedics demonstrate the Saskatoon Fire Department’s commitment towards enhanced front-line emergency care and the investment that City Council continues to make in emergency services.

On the afternoon of September 22, 2020, the Saskatoon Fire Department received internal communication from the Saskatoon Police Service alerting to an unknown package in the 100 block of Veterinary Road. Multiple personnel from the Saskatoon Fire Department, Saskatoon Police Service, Emergency Management Organization, and University of Saskatchewan were committed to this incident.

Upon arrival, a tactical plan was established beginning with hazmat teams making entry into the building to conduct air quality tests; results of these tests confirmed a non-hazardous environment inside. Advancing further into the building, hazmat teams located the unknown package and began testing the suspicious substance within; these tests were also confirmed to be non-hazardous. 

While concluding at this location, a second unknown package containing a suspicious substance was found inside of a building in the 100 block of Administration Place; all personnel re-deployed to the location of this incident. Making entry into the building, hazmat teams conducted tests on the air quality and the suspicious substance within the unknown package; all tests were confirmed to be non-hazardous. 

These incidents were quickly isolated, addressed, and resolved; at no time was there an observed risk to public safety. The Saskatoon Fire Department concluded operations on the University of Saskatchewan grounds at approximately 8:42 p.m. on September 22, 2020.

The investigation into a fire that occurred on September 20, 2020 in the 1200 block of Elevator Road has concluded. A fire investigator has identified the cause to be accidental as a result the spontaneous combustion of improperly disposed of soiled applicators. The applicators, which had been soiled with a stain product, had not been given ample time to dry in an open-air environment before they were improperly stored for future disposal.

Rags, towels, and other applicators that have been soiled with combustible products, such as oil-based paints, stains, and finishes release heat while drying; if that heat is trapped and has access to an oxygen supply, it will build up and create an ideal environment for a fire to start.

The Fire Prevention and Investigation section reminds members of the public of the following tips for safely using, cleaning, and storing or disposing of soiled applicators:

• Allow adequate drying time by hanging soiled rags in an open-air environment and away from combustible materials,
• Never bundle soiled rags together or leave them in a pile; this can create a chemical reaction allowing them to self-heat and spontaneously combust,
• Once dry, place the soiled rags in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid to limit the amount of oxygen,
• Keep the metal container in a cool place and out of direct sunlight, and
• Never store soiled rags or the containers that they are in near a heat source.

Damage resulting from this fire has been estimated at about $30,000.

At approximately 8:57 p.m. on September 20, 2020, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a detached residential garage to be filled with smoke; the caller notified fire dispatchers that one vehicle remained inside the garage and that they were unsure what might be on fire. Three fire engines, one rescue unit, one aerial ladder truck, one fire investigation unit, and one battalion chief responded.

Upon arrival, firefighters located an oversized double detached residential garage with a significant amount of smoke emanating from it. Immediately connecting to a nearby hydrant and using hydraulic rescue tools to breach the overhead door, fire crews made entry into the structure and brought the flames under control in less than 30 minutes from the time of the first fire engine arriving on scene. Searches of the structure using a thermal imaging camera confirmed there to be no occupants or pets inside at the time of the fire. There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident.

A fire investigator is working to identify a cause and assess the damage; an update will be provided upon review of the investigative findings.

A fire investigator has concluded the investigation into a fire that occurred on September 20, 2020 in the 900 block of Preston Avenue South. The cause is confirmed to be accidental as a result of unattended cooking. Damage has been estimated at around $5,000. 

The Fire Prevention and Investigation section reminds members of the public that fires start when your attention stops; always remain alert and aware when cooking, ensuring that combustible materials are a safe distance from all cooking appliances that are capable of producing heat.

At about 1:49 p.m. on September 20, 2020, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a kitchen fire inside one of the units in a multi-unit apartment building located on the 900 block of Preston Avenue South. Three fire engines, one rescue unit, one aerial ladder truck, one fire investigation unit, and one battalion chief responded. 

Firefighters arrived on scene in less than four minutes and found an extinguished fire in the kitchen of one of the units. The occupant of the unit had self-evacuated prior to the arrival of fire crews; however, one cat was retrieved and removed by firefighters upon their arrival. Ventilation was established to clear the unit of dark smoke and toxins prior to fire crews concluding on scene. 

A cause and damage estimate are not available at this time.

At around 6:45 a.m. on September 14, 2020, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call reporting smoke on the third level of a multi-unit apartment building. Three fire engines, one rescue unit, one aerial ladder truck, one fire investigation unit, and one battalion chief were dispatched for response. 

Arriving on scene in less than one minute, firefighters found a three-level walkup apartment with an evacuation in progress. Upon entering the building, an extinguished kitchen fire was located in a unit on the third level. All additional responding fire crews were canceled and sent back to their stations by the commanding fire officer with the exception of the aerial ladder truck. Using ventilation equipment, firefighters cleared mild smoke from the unit and building prior to concluding on scene.

A fire investigator has identified the cause of the fire to be accidental as a result of unattended cooking. Approximately $3,000 in damage occurred. The Saskatoon Fire Department has concluded at the scene of a significant two-alarm structure fire that occurred in the 200 block of Avenue I South on the evening of September 13, 2020 and continued into the early hours of September 14, 2020.

Firefighters successfully protected surrounding exposures, containing the fire to the structure of origin. The fire was officially declared under control at around 11:22 p.m. on September 13th with firefighters extinguishing flare-ups and monitoring for hot spots until about 5:02 a.m. on September 14th. As a result of highly trained personnel, effective fire attack strategies, and diligent accountability measures, there were no injuries reported.

Fire investigators have identified this fire to be incendiary. At the time of release, damage has been estimated at approximately $750,000.

Seven fire engines, one rescue unit, two aerial ladder trucks, three fire investigation units, one public affairs official, one battalion chief, and one assistant chief have been committed to this incident at the time of release.

Firefighters first began softening the fire from the exterior with the intention of continuing extinguishment from the interior of the structure; upon escalation of the fire, the commanding battalion chief directed all fire crews to exit the structure and conduct defensive aerial and ground-level fire attack strategies. The structural integrity has been severely compromised resulting in a partial collapse. Arcing power lines, nearby electrical boxes, and on-site propane tanks have presented safety hazards on scene; the assistant chief serving as safety officer has closely monitored fire ground activities. Multiple utilities have been affected as a result of this fire; crews from the City of Saskatoon have attended the scene and are assisting the Saskatoon Fire Department as required. The Saskatoon Police Service has restricted traffic flow through the area and will issue a release upon these restrictions being lifted.

Firefighters remain on scene extinguishing hot spots and performing overhaul duties. Fire and police investigators will be conducting a thorough scene examination to identify a cause, origin, and damage estimate, as well as collect necessary evidence relative to this incident.

An update will be provided upon new information becoming known.

At approximately 2:01 a.m. on September 13, 2020, the Saskatoon Fire Department received notification from an alarm monitoring company of a commercial fire signal activation at the Jim Pattison Children's Hospital, located at 103 Hospital Drive. Immediately following notification of the fire signal, fire dispatchers received communication from the hospital confirming a fire in the emergency room. Four fire engines, one rescue unit, one aerial ladder truck, one fire investigation unit, and one battalion chief were dispatched to the scene. 

Prior to the arrival of fire crews, hospital staff began evacuating nearby patients to other areas of the hospital and terminated the oxygen supply in the affected area. Upon arrival, firefighters learned that hospital security had partially extinguished the fire using an on-site fire extinguisher. Fire crews completed extinguishment using additional fire extinguishers while simultaneously searching for possible areas of extension. Ventilation of remaining smoke and toxins was conducted using the building's HVAC system.

A fire investigator has confirmed this fire to be accidental as a result of smoking; an adult male patient received severe burns to approximately 25% of his upper body after attempting to smoke while receiving oxygen. It is understood that a small explosion occurred, igniting the fire and causing about $1,000 in damage to the hospital.
