City and contractor snow crews worked through the night and all day today clearing driving lanes along Circle Drive and priority streets as approximately 15 centimetres of snow accumulated over Tuesday night and Wednesday. Crews are operating 30 graders, 10 snowplows and 8 sanders around the clock. With snow expected to stop falling by early evening, they will return to the Priority 1 streets for curb-to-curb clearing around 6 p.m.

While deep snow accumulation in some areas created short-term detours or minor delays, Saskatoon Transit and waste collection operations were not greatly impacted.

  What you can expect from us

1. Crews will grade Priority 1 streets like Circle Dr and streets with three+ lanes each way like Idylwyld Dr, 22nd St and College Dr.
2. By 12 hours in, we plan to move onto Priority 2 double-lane streets like Clarence Ave, McKercher Dr and Millar Ave.
3. Next, we will get to the Priority 3 streets that take you through your neighbourhood like Louise Ave, Howell Ave and Main St.
4. We will also clear City facility sidewalks, Meewasin Trail, pathways along major routes, and walkways over bridges and overpasses within 48 hours.

  How you can help us

1. When you see the blue and amber flashing lights of snow crews, please slow down, remain at least 15 metres (2.5 car lengths) behind, and be prepared to stop.
2. Anticipate winter driving conditions and adjust your driving. This includes slowing down and allowing more space between vehicles.
3. Clear your business sidewalks within 24 hours and residential sidewalks within 48 hours. Please keep this snow on your property.

Saskatoon Transit is operating today; however, snow accumulation is affecting access to bus stops and some streets. Due to heavy snow accumulation on the roads, bus operators may stop in the driving lane to pick up passengers and not pull into bus stops to avoid getting stuck. Buses will be detoured if a bus stop is not accessible due to blown in snow.

Stay informed with the real-time mobile apps, transit and Google or visit saskatoontransit.ca/service-alerts for updates on routes that are delayed longer than 20 minutes and for Snow Event Detours. If you can’t use these tools, please call our customer service centre at 306-975-3100 one hour before your trip for an update.

Access Transit

Access Transit customers are strongly encouraged to reschedule non-urgent trips today. A trip may be cancelled if the street or sidewalk/path to the pick-up location is full of snow, for the safety of the customer and operator. Same-day trips will not be accepted today.

Customers should also prepare for delays as operators navigate traffic and road conditions. In the event a paratransit bus gets stuck in deep snow, customers on board will be required to wait.

Customer service phone lines for both Access Transit and fixed-route transit are busy.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a snowfall warning for Saskatoon, forecasting an accumulation of 15 to 25 centimetres of snow falling this afternoon and overnight. This amount of snow can quickly create challenging driving conditions, including slippery sections on high-traffic routes.

City crews will be on the streets during the storm. Sanding trucks will manage icy sections while plows and graders will clear snow as it accumulates on priority routes.

Drivers are asked to watch for blue and amber flashing lights on road maintenance equipment and give operators the room they need to work safely.

Once a Snow Event is declared – following a more than 5 cm snowfall - residents can follow progress through the Priority Street Snow Grading Map. More information, including the City’s winter road maintenance service level, is available at saskatoon.ca/snow.

Saskatoon Transit will monitor and adjust service as needed; however, service can be delayed or interrupted by collisions, blown-in streets and bus stops that are not accessible due to snowfall and drifts. Stay informed: check Saskatoon Transit service alerts for detours or temporary bus stop closures and view real-time bus locations on third-party apps like Transit and Google Transit on desktop. Pin the routes you use often and receive service alert push notifications.

Lorne Avenue between 4th and 6th Street will be closed on Wednesday, February 18th, starting at 9:00 a.m. for tree trimming. Detours will be in place guiding motorists around the area. This project is expected to take six hours to complete, weather permitting and barring any unforeseen circumstances. 

Saskatoon Transit may be affected by these detours. Transit service alerts and real-time bus information are available on third-party apps like Transit and Google Maps Transit on desktop.

The Saskatoon Fire Department would like to remind residents and visitors of safe practices for purchasing, enjoying and disposing of fireworks. While celebrating the Chinese New Year and the arrival of the Year of the Horse, low-hazard fireworks are permitted on private property from dusk on Chinese New Year's Eve, Monday, February 16, until 12:15 a.m. on Chinese New Year's Day, Tuesday, February 17.

Low-hazard fireworks are designed for public recreational use. These fireworks travel less than 50m (160ft) high and include items such as roman candles, sparklers, fountains, wheels, volcanoes, mines and snakes.

High-hazard fireworks are designed for professionals and can only be purchased by persons holding a valid Fireworks Supervisor – Level I or Level II card issued by Natural Resources Canada.

Residents and spectators are reminded of the risks and obligations associated with fireworks:

• Carefully read and follow the manufacturer instructions.
• Exercise increased caution when handling and discharging any type of firework.
• Choose your location wisely. Fireworks can only be discharged on private property.
• Familiarize yourself with the space requirements for the type of firework being discharged. Requirements vary depending on the firework type.
• Ensure your location is free of overhead obstructions, is clear side-to-side and is a safe distance from combustible materials.
• Ensure that it is not windy and that all spectators are safely located to observe the display.
• Be sure to properly stabilize the firework according to manufacturer direction.
• Other than sparklers, never light or hold a lit firework in your hand.
• Always light the fuse at its tip.
• Never try to relight or fix the fuse on fireworks that did not go off.
• Have a supply of water available and use it to extinguish debris or smouldering embers before they cause injuries, property damage and/or fires.
• Keep in mind that you are solely responsible for any debris that may land on spectators or another’s property.
