Work begins on City’s fifth and sixth flood mitigation projects

June 2, 2025 - 11:00am

UE25-10945
June 2, 2025 - 11:00 am

Construction on two new dry storm ponds begins this month in Cumberland Park and on University of Saskatchewan (USask) land adjacent to 14th St E. They are the fifth and sixth of nine Flood Control Strategy (FCS) projects the City of Saskatoon has undertaken, which will be completed in 2026.

The Cumberland Park project will reduce the flood risk for properties near the intersection of Cumberland Avenue South and Main Street, while the USask project will reduce the flood risk for properties near the intersection of Cumberland Avenue South and 14th Street East. The FCS, aimed at reducing neighbourhood flooding during intense rainfalls, was approved by City Council in 2018.

Dry storm ponds hold water that would otherwise cause flooding in intersections and nearby properties during intense rainfalls. The water flows into the pond instead, then slowly drains into the storm sewer system. Whenever dry, it is used as recreational or park space.

The first three dry ponds constructed as part of the FCS are complete and open to the public in W.W. Ashley Park. Churchill Park, and Weaver Park. The fourth project, which includes underground storm water storage in Brevoort Park South is in service to mitigate flooding, with landscaping work to commence this year. Additionally, three more FCS projects will be built in Saskatoon in 2026 and 2027.

For more information about the FCS program and future project locations, visit saskatoon.ca/floodplan.

June 2, 2025 - 8:30am

CY25-1113
June 2, 2025 - 8:30 am

On May 27, Cosmo Civic Centre was designated as an evacuation site for residents of northern Saskatchewan and is currently temporarily closed to the public.

The customer service kiosk is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., daily.

Drop-in programming and facility rentals continue to be suspended until further notice. To find available programming at the City’s other leisure facilities, visit dropinschedule.saskatoon.ca.

The Carlyle King Branch Library continues to remain open at this time.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this emergency response.

Cankerworms Abundant in Saskatoon Again this Year

May 30, 2025 - 10:00am

CY25-11104
May 30, 2025 - 10:00 am

Cankerworms and leafrollers are an annual issue for Saskatoon’s urban forest. The trees may experience heavy defoliation but, unless there are underlying issues, the trees will put out new leaves and recover.

Cankerworms, also known as loopers and inchworms, are found primarily on elm, but will also feed on other tree species. The fall and spring cankerworm species often feed together during June and July. The caterpillars can be found hanging from silken threads underneath infested trees and can be a nuisance.

Leafrollers often feed while concealed within leaves that are rolled or tied together with silk webbing. Leafrollers can be found on a wide variety of trees. The leaves will often remain rolled throughout the summer but leafrolling does not affect a tree’s health.

Tree banding can be used to deter cankerworms; however, it is not effective against leafrollers or other insects in the urban forest. The best time to place bands on trees is from September to May to help prevent the wingless adult female cankerworm moths from climbing host trees to lay their eggs. It is important to remove the bands at the beginning of June because the bands can collect moisture and cause the trunk to rot.

The City does not control cankerworms, or leafrollers as they typically do not impact the health of the trees they attack. Homeowners interested in controlling them on their own trees should contact a horticulture professional for advice. For additional information on insects and tree diseases, please visit saskatoon.ca/treepests.
