Small fire in 3000 Block of 7th Street East

At 2:26 p.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department received a call from a homeowner that her house was filling with smoke after lighting sage outside. On arrival, fire crews identified a hole burnt in the exterior of the structure. Using a thermal imaging camera, minor heat in the wall was identified. Fire crews cut a hole from the exterior to ensure the fire was fully extinguished. Minor damage to the structure resulted from this fire.
Any form of fire, even from a spiritual or faith based nature has the capability of starting a fire. Never leave an open heat source unattended to avoid an accidental fire.
This is a great time to test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Have a safe weekend.
Motor Vehicle Collision requires Extrication on Broadway Bridge

At 1:54 a.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle collision involving two vehicles on the Broadway Bridge with possible entrapment. A fire engine and rescue unit responded.
On arrival, it was determined that extrication for one person was required. Fire crews began setting up a safe work area with pylons and the fire engine in a fend off position to avoid further accidents on the bridge and providing a safe work area. The person in the vehicle was covered in a tevlar blanket for protection during the extrication. An SFD primary care paramedic provided care to the person in the vehicle during the cutting process. Firefighters had stabilized the vehicle and checked their work area to ensure no hazards were a concern then with the use of a hydraulic cutting tool, removed the car door.
The patient's care continued after removal from the vehicle with SFD assisting in packaging and loading the patient into the ambulance. Patient's care was turned over to the ambulance service who transported the person to hospital.
Firefighters began cleaning up hazardous fluids that had leaked from the vehicles. Debris was removed from the roadway. A search by firefighters on both vehicles was conducted to ensure no other persons were in the vehicles. Once complete, the fire crews packed up their equipment and returned to their stations at 2:41 a.m.
The scene of the collision was turned over to the police service.
Kitchen Fire – 200 block of Mowat Crescent

At 10:46 a.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) Communications Centre received a report of a kitchen fire on the 200 block of Mowat Cres. Three fire engines, one ladder truck, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief were dispatched.
On arrival, fire crews encountered the homeowner standing outside indicating there was a fire in the kitchen. Tactical duties were assigned to fire crews and heavy smoke was discovered entering the side door of the house. An interior fire attack was conducted in the kitchen area and the fire was knocked down at 10:55 a.m. Crews ventilated the structure and conducted an interior search of the residence. Firefighters located and safely removed two pet cats from the home. The cats were not harmed by the fire.
A fire investigator was dispatched to the scene and conducted a fire investigation to determine cause and origin of the kitchen fire. After conducting interviews and a scene investigation, the fire was determined to be accidental due to combustibles stored on the cooktop. The occupant was alerted to the fire by working smoke alarms within the residence and was able to self-evacuate with a pet dog. Damage is estimated at $75,000.
SFD wants to remind the public that working smoke alarms save lives. The smoke alarms in this incident detected the fire early enough for occupants and pets to evacuate safely without injury. For more information about smoke alarms, please visit saskatoon.ca/smokealarms.
Update: Fire in Lighthouse suite

After a more thorough evaluation of the fire scene, damage to the suite is estimated to be closer to $40,000. The building’s sprinkler system extinguished a small fire that resulted in significant water damage to the suite’s ceiling tiles.
No residents will be displaced as a result of this incident. The Lighthouse will accommodate the occupant of the damaged suite. Clean-up in the suite is currently underway. The suite is expected to be fit for occupancy by early next week.

Three fire engines, one ladder truck, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief were dispatched. On arrival, fire crews encountered occupants from the 3rd floor evacuating the building. Tactical duties were assigned to fire crews and proceeded to the 3rd floor. A fire was identified in a suite with heavy smoke but low heat. The sprinkler system had activated and kept the fire in a small state. Fire crews finished extinguishing the fire. A Fire Investigator was dispatched to the scene.
Fire damage was contained to the fire suite. Water had drained from the suite and is affecting approximately 15 suites. Water damage is predominantly to ceiling tiles. Firefighters assisted with resetting the fire alarm system. It is unknown at this time if anyone will be displaced as a result of the fire. A Fire Inspector will attend to ensure the fire and water protection systems are serviced and fully functional. Clean up will commence today.
The Fire Investigator determined the cause was accidental due to improper disposal of smoking material. Damage is estimated at $150,000.
No injuries to civilians or firefighters resulted from this fire.
An update will follow to report if anyone needs to be rehoused. The Saskatoon Fire Department will notify and work with the Ministry of Social Services if rehousing is required.

At 3:19 a.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department Communications Centre received a report of a fire in a suite on the 3rd floor of the Lighthouse. Three fire engines, one ladder truck, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief were dispatched. On arrival, fire crews encountered occupants from the 3rd floor evacuating the building. Tactical duties were assigned to fire crews and proceeded to the 3rd floor. A fire was identified in a suite with heavy smoke but low heat. Cooking fire - 200 block of Avenue T North

At 7:27 p.m. on December 8, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) received a report of a grease fire on the 200 block of Avenue T North. One engine and one battalion chief were dispatched.
Upon arriving, the occupant had smothered the grease fire with a wet blanket. The stove, range hood and cupboards sustained significant damage. The fire crew confirmed there were no signs of heat or smoke, and the fire was completely extinguished. There were no injuries as a result of the fire.
SFD’s Fire Investigator reported the cause of the fire as unattended cooking. The fire originated from a pot of boiling cooking oil that extended to the range hood. The Fire Investigator also noted the smoke alarms in the home were expired and not working. Damage is estimated to be $25,000.

Motor Vehicle Accident at Circle Drive & College Drive

The Saskatoon Fire Department responded to 3 vehicles involved in a collision at Circle Drive and College Drive at 7:44 a.m. One fire engine, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief responded. On arrival, one occupant was extricated by fire crews without the use of a hydraulic cutting tool. It was determined that injuries were minor. Fire crews cleaned up fluids that had leaked from the vehicles. After establishing scene safety, fire crews returned to their stations.
The accident scene was turned over to the Saskatoon Police Service.

Apartment fire at 1020 Matheson Drive
December 7, 2021 - 9:12 am
At 6:02 a.m. the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) received a report of a fire on the first floor of an apartment building at 1020 Matheson Drive. Three engines, one rescue truck, one ladder and one battalion chief unit were dispatched.
Upon arriving, fire crews observed smoke coming from the main door of the apartment building and also a lower-level suite window. Occupants of the building were evacuating.
Fire crews proceeded with an interior attack and advanced a hose line to apply water to the fire. Firefighters confirmed a small fire in the bedroom of the first-floor suite. Firefighters located the main source of the fire in a closet and extinguished the flames. Meanwhile, another crew continued to assist occupants who were not able to initially self-evacuate.
One occupant from the burned suite was assessed and treated by the ambulance service. The Saskatoon Police Service was also on scene with a van to keep occupants of the apartment building warm.
The fire was contained to one suite and was declared under control at 6:14 a.m. During the salvage and overhaul stage, crews ventilated the building of residual smoke and carbon monoxide. The building was fully vented and occupants were let back into their suites at 6:38 a.m.
SFD’s Fire Investigator deemed the cause of the fire as incendiary and noted the smoke alarms in the burned suite had been tampered with. Fire damage is estimated at $20,000.
SFD would like to remind residents to test their smoke alarms monthly. Tampering or removing life safety devices such as smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms is a criminal offence and can be subject to a fine up to $25,000.
Vehicle Collision – Circle Drive & Highway 11 South

Vehicle Collision – Circle Drive & Highway 11 South
Upon arriving, fire crews observed a head-on collision between an SUV and a sedan. No extraction was needed as all occupants were safely evacuated from the damaged vehicles.
Fire crews assessed the vehicle occupants. One male was transferred to the ambulance service and taken to the hospital with what was believed to be minor injuries. Two more occupants were treated by fire crews and released from the scene with no injuries.
SFD’s crew continued to clean up the scene and returned to the station at 8:08 p.m.
Single Vehicle rollover at Circle & Highway 11

At 3:39 p.m., three engines, a rescue unit and the Battalion Chief were dispatched by Saskatoon Fire Department Communications Centre to a single vehicle rollover. First arriving fire crews assessed the scene and determined that no injuries had resulted from this accident. Incoming fire crews were then downgraded to a no "lights and sirens" response to the scene. The vehicle was stabilized for safety and the front windshield was removed by fire crews. The entrapped person was assisted by fire crews and safely removed from the vehicle. The accident the scene was turned over to the ambulance and police service for further assessment. Fire crews cleaned up fluids leaking from the vehicle.
