Saskatoon Fire Department assists with commercial fire in Green Meadow Estates
November 29, 2021 - 2:36 pm
At 3:00 p.m. on November 28, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) received a call from provincial dispatch to request mutual aid for a large commercial building fire in Green Meadow Estates. One engine, one brush truck, two tankers and a Battalion Chief were dispatched.
Upon arrival, SFD’s crews found a large industrial structure fully involved in fire. Fire crews from Clavet, Allan and Bradwell were also present on scene. Following the command of Clavet’s Fire Chief, SFD’s firefighters assisted with extinguishing the fire. SFD personnel remained on scene and assisted with fire suppression until after 11:00 p.m.
Due to the magnitude of the fire, there was significant loss to the property. A fire investigation and damage estimate will be initiated by the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency.
Smoke alarm tampering a rising concern
November 26, 2021 - 1:05 pm
The Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) is advising the public of a concerning trend in smoke alarm tampering.
Between Monday, November 22 and Wednesday, November 24, SFD responded to two separate fires where smoke alarms had been taken down and removed. An additional 10 properties were identified earlier this month with a total of 13 missing smoke alarms.
“We know working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a fire in half. It’s very concerning to see so many properties where the smoke alarms have been tampered with or not installed at all,” says Assistant Chief Yvonne Raymer. “When a fire happens in a home, you may only have seconds to escape. That’s why early detection of a fire is vital and only working smoke alarms can provide those precious seconds.”
Smoke alarms should be installed outside each sleeping area and are most effective when interconnected throughout your home. It is important to test your smoke alarms monthly and change the batteries at least once a year. The entire alarm should be replaced every seven years or sooner if required, according to the manufacturer.
SFD would like to remind residents that tampering or removing life safety devices such as smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms is a criminal offence and can be subject to a fine up to $25,000 for a person held liable of the offence.

Structure Fire - 1900 Block of 22nd Street West
November 25, 2021 - 10:38 am
Saskatoon Fire Department Communications Centre received received multiple 9-1-1 calls for a garage fire at 4:55 a.m. Our first arriving fire engine reported a garage that was fully involved in fire. Incoming firefighters and their officers were assigned tactical duties by the Officer first on scene. A power line was brought down to the ground by the fire and a crew from Saskatoon Light & Power responded. An SFD Safety Officer was assigned to ensure safety on the fire ground. At 5:12 a.m., the garage had been consumed by fire to the point of collapse. Fire crews continued to extinguish the fire. This fire was brought under control at 5:39 a.m.
Dispatched to the scene were a total of 6 front line emergency response apparatus, a Battalion Chief, a Fire Investigator and a service vehicle. Fire crews began packing up hose lines and tools after extinguishment was completed. Equipment that was contaminated by smoke, soot and exposed to gases created by the fire were transported back to station by an SFD service vehicle. Fire crews began cleaning and decontaminating equipment back at the stations.
The scene was turned over to the Fire Investigator at 6:03 a.m. An investigator from the Saskatoon Police Service assisted in the investigation. Our Fire Investigator has determined that the fire originated in the interior of the garage which was reported as not being used for living purposes but household furnishings were identified as being present. Damage to the garage and neighbouring properties is estimated at $25,000. The exact cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. The Fire Investigator will continue to work with the Police Service in this investigation.
No injuries to civilians or firefighters occurred as a result of this fire.
Structure fire in the 900 Block of Avenue L North
November 12, 2021 - 12:50 pm
At 09:35 a.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department received a report of a house fire with smoke and flame showing. Three fire engines, one ladder truck, one rescue truck, the Battalion Chief and a Fire Investigator were dispatched to the scene. First arriving fire crew and their officer reported heavy smoke showing. All incoming fire crews were assigned tactical duties and extinguishment was initiated from the exterior into the interior. Due to an extreme accumulation of items in the yard and the interior of the structure, this posed an extra challenge to firefighters as they advanced hose lines and water onto the fire. The fire was knocked down at 09:46 a.m. while firefighters had to work around extremely congested conditions in order to get to the origin of the fire and complete extinguishment. Searches were conducted to ensure no one was inside the structure in need of evacuation.
No injuries occurred to firefighters or civilians due to this fire.
The Fire Investigator identified many contributing factors to this fire. The utilities were not in service at the time of the fire. An inappropriate and unsafe heat source identified as a hand made furnace in a bedroom caused the fire. The makeshift furnace was constructed of a barrel to allow for items to be burned and inadequately vented through the bedroom window. The amount of items inside the structure contributed to the spread of fire and its challenge in being extinguished. Damage is estimated to be $50, 000 as the fire extended from the bedroom and its window into the roof. Cause of the fire was determined to be accidental.
Due to the extreme amount of materials loitering inside and outside of the structure, the Fire Investigator will be issuing Orders under the Property Maintenance & Nuisance Abatement Bylaw 8175 requiring the removal of items and a separate Order will be issued requiring repairs to the structure due to the fire damage. The house is being closed under the Authority of the Saskatoon Fire Department due to the lack of utilities, fire damage and the extreme accumulation identified.
One occupant is displaced due to this fire and has found alternate accommodations.

Saskatoon Fire Department recognizes November as Fall Prevention Month
November 4, 2021 - 8:00 am
One in three adults over the age of 65 will fall each year. By the time adults reach 85, the ratio becomes 1 in 2. In recognition of Fall Prevention Month, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) will be focussing on its Remembering When program to raise awareness about fall prevention and fall related injuries in older adults.
Remembering When is a National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) designed program that uses nostalgia to promote eight fire safety and eight fall prevention messages. The goal of the program is to help older adults eliminate fire and fall hazards so they can stay in their homes as long as they would like. Through the program, older adults are also taught what to do in the event of a fire and how to get up off the floor if they have fallen and are not hurt.
Last year, SFD responded to 1150 lift assist requests.
“Falls can be caused by a variety of factors and can happen anytime,” says Dori Krahn, Community Relations Coordinator for SFD. “Falls are also preventable. The Remembering When program allows us to connect with older adults, help them identify risks in their home, and provide them with resources to improve their fall prevention efforts. The purpose of the program is to ensure the safety of our older population and help them live healthy, active and independent lives.”
SFD, in partnership with the Saskatoon Council on Aging (SCOA), uses follow-up phone calls, group presentations and home visits through the Remembering When program. This level of personalized fire and fall prevention ensures that each individual is receiving information that is relevant to their specific living situation and lifestyle. To book a home visit, please call: 306-975-7715.
