Prescribed fires are underway in Heritage, Lakewood, Hyde, Donna Birkmaier and Gabriel Dumont Parks

October 4, 2021 - 9:00am

CY21-2540
October 4, 2021 - 9:00 am

During the months of October and November, Parks staff in consultation with the Meewasin Valley Authority and the Saskatoon Fire Department, will be performing brief, small-scale prescribed fires in the naturalized areas within Heritage, Lakewood, Hyde, Donna Birkmaier and Gabriel Dumont Parks. This initiative is part of the City’s overall strategy to enhance and conserve the biodiversity of naturalized areas in Saskatoon parks.

A prescribed fire is the planned and controlled application of fire to a defined area of land. Prescribed fires replicate the natural renewal process of grasslands, reduce the risk of wildfire and enhance habitat for wildlife.

Prescribed fires are performed by trained Parks staff, and the Saskatoon Fire Department is either on-site or on call to help manage the fire if needed. Prescribed fires are a common, cost-effective park management practice in many cities across Canada and the United States and have been conducted safely for many years.

Timing of the prescribed fires will be determined by weather and wind conditions and residents will be notified via the City’s service alerts and social media channels. Signage will also be placed at the location of the fire to alert park visitors.

The City asks residents for their cooperation when visiting Heritage, Lakewood, Hyde, Donna Birkmaier and Gabriel Dumont Parks at the time of a prescribed fire by respecting work zones and ensuring dogs are leashed when walking through the parks.

The following can be expected during and after a prescribed fire:

  • Small areas of land are burned during a fire, so only portions of a park are blackened at any given time
  • Shrubs and trees are not burned and therefore are not negatively impacted
  • Vigorous new growth occurs following a fire (in a matter of weeks in the spring), which is appreciated by wildlife
  • The reduction in accumulated dead plant material provides protection against accidental wildfires
  • Smoke is present for the duration of the fire but dissipates rather quickly once the fire is over

For more information on the City’s prescribed fire program, visit saskatoon.ca/prescribedfires.

City celebrates Active Aging Week

October 4, 2021 - 8:00am

CY21-2531
October 4, 2021 - 8:00 am

The International Council of Aging designated October 4 to 10, 2021, as Active Aging Week – a time to celebrate aging and the benefits of active living at any age.

Active Aging Week challenges society’s expectations of aging by showing that regardless of age or health conditions, adults over 50 can live life to the fullest.

“Active Aging is a priority for Recreation & Community Development,” says Andrew Roberts, Director of Recreation & Community Development. “We offer a variety of drop-in and registered programs at our Leisure Centres that have been categorized as Fit Over 50 programs and provide a guide to physical activity for people 50+.”

To celebrate Active Aging week, the City’s Recreation & Community Development department invites residents to stop by a Leisure Centre during Active Aging Week. An ambassador will be on location to talk about fall programs. It’s also a chance to win prizes, visit with friends and relax after exercising.

  • Shaw Centre: Monday, October 4 (11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.)
  • Lawson Civic Centre: Tuesday, October 5 (9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.)
  • Lakewood Civic Centre: Wednesday, October 6 (8:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.)
  • Saskatoon Field House: Thursday, October 7 (9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.)
  • Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre: Friday, October 8 (10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.)

To learn more about Active Aging Week and programs available, visit saskatoon.ca/fitover50.

Residents are reminded that masks are required when accessing a Leisure Centre.

Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off: Sunday, October 3

October 1, 2021 - 12:00pm

UE21-2547
October 1, 2021 - 12:00 pm

The City of Saskatoon and GFL Environmental will host the next Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Drop-off Day this Sunday, October 3 (9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.) at the Civic Operations Centre (57 Valley Road).

Saskatoon residents are invited to drop off their HHW materials for recycling and safe disposal; diverting them from the landfill and helping the City work towards its 70% waste diversion target.

HHW materials include aerosols, automotive fluids, batteries, cleaners, cylinders, light bulbs, medications, yard chemicals, vaping products, and more.

In an effort to reduce wait times, residents are encouraged to use the Saskatoon Waste Wizard app or visit saskatoon.ca/wastewizard to search their items first. In some cases, a more convenient, year-round disposal option may be available.

To ensure the health and safety of residents and staff, we ask that:

  • Residents do not attend the event if they are sick.
  • Residents remain in their vehicles at all times.
  • HHW material be safely sealed in clearly marked containers and placed in the back of vehicles. Containers will not be returned once handled by event staff.

More details, future event dates, and a complete list of acceptable items are available at saskatoon.ca/hazardouswaste.

City and USask study rubber tire-derived chemicals in stormwater

October 1, 2021 - 4:02am

UE21-2528

The City of Saskatoon (City) and University of Saskatchewan (USask) recently collaborated on a study to see if chemicals that leach from rubber tires are entering the stormwater system. Water that enters storm drains, through snowmelt or rain runoff, flows into the South Saskatchewan River.

“Chemicals from rubber tire leachate have been associated with mortalities in Coho salmon in Washington State,” says Markus Brinkmann, USask Assistant Professor, School of Environment and Sustainability. “However, we currently don’t know the effects on wildlife in our region. The results, in what we believe is the first study of its kind in a Canadian municipality, show high readings of the tire rubber related compounds in Saskatoon’s runoff.”

The findings are a result of samples taken from snow facilities, snowmelt puddles, and about a dozen outfall sites along the South Saskatchewan River within the city in 2019 and 2020. The study indicates the high concentrations may relate to occasional but intense rainstorms in the summer and snowmelt in the winter. Both types of events can lead to significant accumulation followed by sudden flushing of tire rubber chemicals from roads into the stormwater system.

Russ Munro, Director of Saskatoon Water, says further research is required to better understand the factors driving the findings.

“This is a great example of why continued research and partnerships with institutions like the University of Saskatchewan are so important. Saskatoon Water operates within the guidelines set out by the Saskatchewan Water Security Agency and we’ll work with them to determine what next steps should be.”

Munro points to positive City initiatives already in place that are designed to protect the environment from contents within stormwater. Initiatives include the annual street sweeping program, numerous storm ponds that help reduce contaminants and manage water runoff, and the new Snow Management Facility. Melt water from the Snow Management Facility runs through an oil and grit separator into a meltwater/stormwater pond. The meltwater then enters a series of specially designed barriers before being discharged in a controlled fashion into the stormwater system. The City also participates in the Yellow Fish Road Program to educate residents about the impact communities can have on water runoff.

The study has been supported through an Engage Grant of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Because the risks to species of fishes and aquatic organisms in the South Saskatchewan River are unknown, the USask team has submitted a grant application to dig deeper into the mechanisms of toxicity. Another joint application from USask and the City that focuses on detection of the compounds is being prepared.

The study has been published in the peer-reviewed Environmental Science & Technology Letters.
