Sweep happens, Saskatoon. Let’s make sure it happens the right way

May 1, 2025 - 10:00am

TC25-10961
May 1, 2025 - 10:00 am

The City of Saskatoon’s neighbourhood street sweeping program kicks off Monday, May 5, 2025, with crews starting to clean residential roads across the city.

Watch for yellow “No Parking” signs to know when your street is scheduled. Moving your vehicle off the road on sweep day helps ensure the entire curb lane gets cleaned—keeping streets dirt-free and preventing debris from entering the stormwater system.

Sweeping crews will first target these neighbourhoods:

  • Holiday Park
  • King George
  • Riversdale
  • Pleasant Hill
  • Fairhaven
  • Stonebridge
  • Adelaide/Churchill
  • Nutana Park
  • Nutana
  • Holliston
  • Grosvenor Park
  • Haultain
  • Buena Vista
  • Varsity View
  • Queen Elizabeth

Sweeping in residential neighbourhoods throughout Saskatoon is expected to take about seven weeks (weather permitting). Main roads are swept first to provide alternate parking options for residents. If a vehicle isn’t moved in time, it may be relocated nearby to allow crews to complete curb-to-curb sweeping.

Commercial and high-traffic streets have already been swept, and once roads are clean, line painting will follow to refresh crosswalks, lane markings and other road features that keep everyone moving safely.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping this year’s spring sweep happen the right way! Visit saskatoon.ca/sweep to find your sweep day and stay informed.

City receives prestigious Canadian Award for Financial Reporting

April 30, 2025 - 4:21pm

CF25-10964
April 30, 2025 - 4:21 pm

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting (CAnFR) to the City of Saskatoon for its annual financial report for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2023. This is the 17th time the City has received this award. View the Administrative Report to be presented to the Standing Policy Committee (SPC) on Finance on May 7, 2025.

The GFOA presented the City with the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting in recognition of the City’s ability to present financial information in a clear, concise, educational, and informative manner.

“Our Finance team continues to uphold financial reporting best practices in terms of clarity, accountability and transparency year-after-year, they consistently align with GFOA annual report format and content standards,” says Kari Smith, Director of Finance. “We are dedicated to serving community taxpayers and stakeholders with clear communication and transparency on the City’s overall financial standing.”

To be awarded the CAnFR, a municipal government must publish an easily readable and efficiently organized annual financial report, whose contents conform to program standards. Such reports should go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles and demonstrate an effort to clearly communicate the municipal government’s financial picture, enhance an understanding of financial reporting by municipal governments, and address user needs.

The CAnFR Program was established to encourage municipal governments across Canada to publish innovative financial reporting and to maintain a high standard of quality recognized amongst peers.

The attainment of this prestigious award represents a significant achievement by the City of Saskatoon and its financial management team.

City-wide multi-unit organics program recommended by end of 2028

April 30, 2025 - 4:15pm

UE25-10957
April 30, 2025 - 4:15 pm

Following a year-long pilot study, City Administration recommends a community-wide multi-unit organics program be implemented by the City. This program will further improve waste diversion in Saskatoon and see all residents have access to the same waste services.

“Expanding organics collection to multi-unit residences is a critical step in Saskatoon’s waste diversion strategy,” says Jeanna South, Director of Sustainability. “From the feedback we heard, a City-provided service will ensure a consistent and cost-efficient program that builds on the success of the residential curbside organics program and supports the long-term sustainability of our new organics processing facility.”

A report to the May 6, 2025 meeting of the Standing Policy Committee on Environment, Utilities and Corporate Services provides a detailed analysis of the options available to the City for multi-unit organics programs.

The recommendation follows engagement with pilot participants, including residents, condominium boards and property managers. A City-provided service was both the preferred option by participants and is expected to be lowest cost option when compared to current market options. Organic material gathered through the program would be handled at the City’s organic processing facility, which begins construction this July. In addition, this approach is expected to achieve higher rates of waste diversion by aligning education programs and enforcement efforts to support program goals.

In Spring 2023, the green cart was successfully introduced to single-detached dwellings across the city, diverting over 41,000 tonnes — equal to about 3,500 full garbage trucks — of organic waste from the Saskatoon landfill to date.

Following approval, different deployment options will be evaluated that aim to have a city-wide program fully operational by the end of 2028. All impacted properties would be given a minimum of one-year advance notice.

To learn more about the pilot program, visit saskatoon.ca/multiorganics.

Broadway Bridge rehabilitation starts May 12: full bridge closure for six months

April 30, 2025 - 2:00pm

TC25-10907
April 30, 2025 - 2:00 pm

Saskatoon’s Broadway Bridge will close for approximately six months starting on Monday, May 12, 2025. The 93-year-old structure will undergo rehabilitation, including deck repairs and improvements to the multi-use pathways on both sides.

"This proactive project is essential in ensuring the historic Broadway Bridge, which has an annual average daily traffic count of 20,000 vehicles, retains its structural integrity and reliability for the community,” says Terry Schmidt, General Manager of Transportation and Construction. “We appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation and remind Broadway Bridge users to reroute their commutes."

New asphalt, new waterproofing, new traffic barriers, arch and railing improvements and the removal of old and abandoned utilities underneath the bridge are also a part of the project. At the same time as the bridge work, Schmidt says there will be water main replacements on 19th Street, and the 4th Avenue South and 19th Street East intersection will be reconfigured for overall safety and to improve the efficiency of buses travelling between Broadway Avenue and 19th Street - a future Link route.

“The right northbound flow-through lane will be removed, and that intersection will change into a “T” intersection. Traffic signals will be relocated, pedestrian signals will be added, and the island and centre medians will be removed.”

Throughout construction, pedestrian access to Meewasin Trail will be maintained via scaffolding tunnels under the bridge. Friendship Park will remain open, with fencing adjacent to the bridge. Spadina Crescent between the bridge and 3rd Avenue South will be closed. The boat launch will remain open and accessible via Spadina Crescent from 20th Street East.

Full closures will include the Broadway Bridge (including multi-use pathways on both sides), Broadway Avenue from Saskatchewan Crescent East to 20th Street East, 19th Street East from 3rd Avenue South to Broadway Avenue, and 4th Avenue South from 19th Street East to 20th Street East.

“Saskatoon Transit will be affected by these projects, with some Broadway Avenue, Victoria Avenue and Downtown routes being redirected. Keep an eye on Transit service alerts and real-time bus information available on third-party apps like Transit and Google Maps Transit.”

For the latest updates on the Broadway Bridge Rehabilitation project and work happening on other Saskatoon roadways during the 2025 construction season, check the Daily Road Report and visit saskatoon.ca/construction.

Reminder: Permits Required for Park Access

April 28, 2025 - 10:00am

CY25-10943
April 28, 2025 - 10:00 am

Spring is a busy time of year for projects in the yard, garden, and around the home. Contractors and homeowners with a property adjacent to a park may wish to use the park as an access point for deliveries, equipment and/or vehicles related to their projects.

The City would like to remind contractors and homeowners about the importance of gaining approval prior to using the park space, park linkage, greenspace or bufferstrips as an access point for deliveries, equipment and/or vehicles to ensure the safety and enjoyment of these spaces for everyone.

To obtain a permit, contractors and homeowners are required to:

  • Complete the Request Access to a Park online form at saskatoon.ca/parkaccess;
  • Complete the Request City Utility Line Locate online form at Locating Underground Utilities | Saskatoon.ca or Sask 1st - Call Before You Dig
  • Call Parks Customer Service at 306-975-3300.

Permit applications should be submitted at least one week prior to the date required.

Once the permit has been issued, the permit holder is responsible for:

  • Repairing any damage to City property at the homeowner's/contractor’s expense. As per Bylaw 7767 there are fines associated with park damage.
  • Removing all litter/debris after the project is complete.
  • Expenses incurred by the City to repair damage.
  • Adhering to any restrictions set forth in the approval process, including limitations for vehicle access when the turf is wet.
  • Accepting liability for any injury to the public, and for damages to public property.
  • Contacting the Parks Department after the work is complete for an inspection and to close the permit.

For more information, or to request a Park Access Permit for your project, call 306‑975‑3300 or visit saskatoon.ca/parkaccess.

Pavement markings get fresh coat of paint

April 24, 2025 - 7:00am

TC25-10936
April 24, 2025 - 7:00 am

Crews have started repainting pavement markings to ensure we can all safely get around our city.

Pavement marking work started earlier this month with repainting crosswalks in school zones and residential neighbourhoods.

In the coming weeks, crews will be out refreshing pavement markings such as traffic lane lines, edge lines, centre lines, arrows and cycling symbols.

Please use caution and take care when you encounter a painting crew on the road. They’re not blocking your path – they’re making a safer one. Let’s do our part to keep them safe, too, and respect work zones.

To learn more about pavement markings in Saskatoon, visit saskatoon.ca/LinePaint.

Council approves shift to SK Recycles-led programs in 2028

April 23, 2025 - 1:00pm

UE25-10936
April 23, 2025 - 1:00 pm

Saskatoon City Council today approved making a formal written submission to SK Recycles (formerly Multi-Material Stewardship Western), the provincial stewardship agency, signaling intent to participate in their SK Recycles-led collection models. Starting in January 2028, SK Recycles will deliver both the curbside and multi-unit residential recycling programs for the City of Saskatoon. This will allow time to transition the funding model for waste services that had previously been supported by SK Recycles funding. The change is not expected to cause disruption to the service level for residents.

The decision follows a formal offer from SK Recycles to transition to its new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) household recycling program. In May 2024, the Government of Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment approved the Household Packaging and Paper Stewardship Program Regulations, appointing SK Recycles to take over municipal recycling programs.

A report to the April 1 meeting of the Environment, Utilities and Corporate Services Committee (EU&CS) provided a detailed analysis of the options available to the City. Due to considerations such as existing contractual requirements for blue carts and compost depots, Administration recommended and City Council approved maintaining the status quo while Administration works with SK Recycles and recycling service providers to explore an interim agreement that could see the City join earlier as a collector.

Residents will learn more about the service-provider change in the months leading up to the 2028 SK Recycles implementation. By 2028, all Saskatchewan communities will have the option to transition to a full Extended Producer Responsibility program for household packaging and paper, joining the SK Recycles program.

Parks staff conducting prescribed fires in naturalized park areas today

April 23, 2025 - 12:00pm

CY25-10933
April 23, 2025 - 12:00 pm

Parks staff in consultation with the Meewasin Valley Authority and the Saskatoon Fire Department, will be performing brief, small-scale prescribed fires in the naturalized areas within Heritage Park today and, weather permitting, Donna Birkmaier Park tomorrow. This initiative is part of the City’s overall strategy to enhance and conserve the biodiversity of naturalized areas in Saskatoon parks.

A prescribed fire is the planned and controlled application of fire to a defined area of land. Prescribed fires replicate the natural renewal process of grasslands, reduce the risk of wildfire and enhance habitat for wildlife.

Prescribed fires are performed by trained Parks staff, and the Saskatoon Fire Department is either on-site or on call to help manage the fire if needed. Prescribed fires are a common, cost-effective park management practice in many cities across Canada and the United States and have been conducted safely for many years.

Timing of the prescribed fires will be determined by weather and wind conditions and residents will be notified via the City’s service alerts and social media channels. Signage will also be placed at the location of the fire to alert park visitors.

The City asks residents for their cooperation at the time of a prescribed fire by respecting work zones and ensuring dogs are leashed when walking through the parks.

The following can be expected during and after a prescribed fire:

  • Small areas of land are burned during a fire, so only portions of a park are blackened at any given time
  • The surrounding area may experience some smoke
  • Shrubs and trees are not burned and therefore are not negatively impacted
  • Vigorous new growth occurs in the spring which is appreciated by wildlife
  • The reduction in accumulated dead plant material provides protection against accidental wildfires

For more information on the City’s Prescribed Fire Program, visit saskatoon.ca/prescribedfires.

Woodlawn Cemetery Guidelines for Gravesite Memorials

April 17, 2025 - 10:00am

CY25-10920
April 17, 2025 - 10:00 am

As the weather warms, cemetery staff will begin spring cleanup of the cemetery grounds. The City of Saskatoon reminds visitors to the Woodlawn Cemetery of the guidelines in place for gravesite memorials. These guidelines are intended to maintain a pleasant environment and respect the final resting place of loved ones:

  • Only approved monuments or memorials are considered permanent items and are permitted to remain in the cemetery year-round. All other items placed on a gravesite, flowerbed, monument, or concrete foundation are considered temporary and will be removed periodically.
  • Flowers and other items are permitted on the gravesite the day of the burial and will be left for a period of seven calendar days. After this time, items will be removed by the City. Please note, the City does not take responsibility for any removed, damaged, or missing items placed in the cemetery by the public.

From May 1 to October 15:

  • Families may establish a flowerbed at the gravesite upon approval from the Cemetery Office, except for military burials in the Field of Honour and flat marker areas. Annual flowers are allowed, provided they do not hang over the edge of the flowerbed or impede maintenance of adjacent gravesites. Flowerbeds must be approved by the Cemetery Office before installation to ensure they are within guidelines.
  • Items not allowed in flowerbeds include shrubs, perennials, decorative fencing, rocks, stones, concrete, and breakable or fragile items.
  • The City assumes no responsibility for the appearance, maintenance and fall cleanup of approved flowerbeds planted by the public. If flowerbeds are neglected, they will be removed.

Cemetery visiting hours are 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily. The Cemetery Office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:20 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding statutory holidays. For all inquiries, contact the Cemetery Office at 306-975-3308 or cemetery@saskatoon.ca.

Co-existing with Saskatoon’s urban wildlife

April 16, 2025 - 9:00am

CY25-10911
April 16, 2025 - 9:00 am

As warmer weather approaches, it’s important to remember that we share our urban spaces with many species of wildlife such as coyotes, foxes, geese, jackrabbits and raccoons. Encountering urban wildlife in Saskatoon is normal and these animals play a vital role in our ecosystem. Understanding how to coexist with them can ensure safety for both the wildlife and our community.

Here are some important tips for co-existing with urban wildlife:

  • Do not feed wildlife: You are not helping them. Feeding wild animals can make them lose their natural fear of humans, leading to increased encounters and potential conflicts.
  • Secure food sources: Keep garbage, compost, birdseed and pet food out of reach and tightly sealed.
  • Keep pets safe: Always supervise pets when they are outside, especially at night. While out on a walk, have pets under your control and on a leash in
    areas known to have wildlife.
  • Respect wildlife: They are not pets. Keep wildlife wild by not approaching or attempting to touch them.
  • Use hazing techniques: If you encounter a wild animal, make loud noises, wave your arms and throw small objects towards (but not at) it to scare it away. Do not run or turn your back.
  • Report unusual behaviour: If the animal is acting unusual (e.g., approaching people, staggering or acting confused), call Customer Care at
306-975-2476. If the animal is acting aggressive, contact the Saskatoon Police Service non-emergency line at 306-975-8300. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

By following these guidelines, we can co-exist safely and prevent unwanted encounters with the wildlife that share our urban spaces.

The City continues to work on plans to mitigate aggressive wildlife behaviour, with City Council approving next steps on this matter at its March 26 meeting.

For more information on urban wildlife, visit saskatoon.ca/wildlife.

Spring clean-up of park and open space areas starts

April 15, 2025 - 1:15pm

CY25-10921
April 15, 2025 - 1:15 pm

Spring is here, which means City workers are starting to ramp up maintenance activities for the more than 2,000 hectares of park and open spaces in Saskatoon. Seasonal workers returned mid-April and the park clean-up process will continue until mid-May.

Spring park maintenance activities include:

  • Park clean-up, consisting mainly of litter control and removal of branches and leaves from turf areas and shrub beds.
  • Pumping out spring run-off in low-lying areas in parks and green spaces.
  • Sweeping park-front sidewalks and boulevards where grass, trees and/or flowerpots are located. Full-size street sweepers will follow the same path after to collect the debris left behind on the road.
  • Grooming of crusher dust trails in naturalized park areas to remove the ruts from run-off and other winter activities will begin once the trails have fully dried.
  • Collecting litter and beginning of mowing cycles to over 400 hectares of open space areas along Circle Drive and other major freeways.
  • Emptying of garbage receptacles will increase to at least once a week, at the beginning of May.
  • The Sports Field program is gearing up for the May 1 (weather dependent) start date for various sport user groups. Preparations includes infield grooming of the softball/baseball diamonds, turf inspection, litter/garbage control and field line painting.

Residents are reminded that a Park Access Permit is required to access private property from a City park to complete all work including landscaping, construction, tree removal, renovations and building a deck, fence or pool. Homeowners and contractors can request a permit by completing the online application form at least one week prior to the date required. Visit saskatoon.ca/parkaccess to access the form and more information on park access requirements.

Early street sweeping underway in Saskatoon

April 10, 2025 - 10:00am

April 10, 2025 - 10:00 am

With the arrival of spring and the melting of snow, the City of Saskatoon has begun early street sweeping operations to remove winter debris from high-traffic roadways.

Throughout April, crews will focus on major streets—those with heavy traffic and significant buildup of dirt and debris. Sweepers will clear gutters and medians, navigating around parked vehicles to remove as much material as possible before the City-wide full sweep begins.

City-wide street sweeping is set to begin in early May. At that time, temporary “No Parking” signs will be placed to allow crews full access to the curb. Residents are encouraged to move their vehicles as signed to ensure a complete and efficient cleanup of every neighbourhood.

In addition to sweeping, road maintenance teams are actively addressing potholes. Crews are applying cold mix asphalt as a temporary fix to high-priority areas until hot mix becomes available later this month. If you notice a pothole that poses a danger to drivers or a sunken pavement patch, you can report it on the City’s Report a Pothole map and we’ll get to it as soon as we can. More information is available at saskatoon.ca/potholes.

The City of Saskatoon appreciates the cooperation of residents in maintaining clean and well-maintained roadways. For more details on the street sweeping schedule, visit saskatoon.ca/sweep.

We thank all residents for their cooperation in helping keep Saskatoon's roadways clean, safe and ready for the season ahead.
