Saskatoon Light & Power to match SaskPower: new electrical rates effective February 1
January 29, 2026 - 7:00am
City Council at its January 28, 2026, meeting, approved a 3.9 per cent electrical rate increase effective February 1, 2026, and a further 3.9 per cent increase effective February 1, 2027, to align with SaskPower’s proposed rate adjustments.
In alignment with SaskPower, the February 1, 2026, increase will be implemented on an interim basis. This will be in place until final approval is received from the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel following the public rate review process, expected to conclude this summer.
For an average residential customer using 625 kWh per month, the monthly bill is expected to increase by $5.61 in February 2026 and an additional $5.85 in February 2027. The impact for commercial customers will vary based on their rate category and electricity consumption, resulting in an overall 3.9 per cent increase.
The main drivers for the rate increase, as indicated in SaskPower’s current application, include increased capital investments, operating, maintenance, fuel, and administration expenses.
Saskatoon Light & Power (SL&P), as a reseller of electricity, matches its power rates to those established by SaskPower. This ensures equitable rates between utility customers in Saskatoon regardless of whether they live within SL&P’s service area or SaskPower's.
The previous general electricity rate increase occurred on April 1, 2023, when a system-wide average increase of 4 per cent came into effect. Since then, the Carbon Charge was updated annually until April 1, 2025, when the Government of Saskatchewan suspended it temporarily.
Please visit saskatoon.ca/ElectricalRates for full details on electrical rates effective February 1, 2026.

January 23, 2026 - 6:30am
- 2nd Avenue – Sunday, January 25, from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Saskatoon Light & Power will remove seasonal decorations on some city streets and bridges starting January 19. Work will impact traffic in the following areas:
This will be a moving work zone and will impact traffic in both directions. Drivers are reminded to slow down in work zones and be respectful of workers.
The Decorative Lighting Program provides lit and unlit seasonal decorations on street light poles in many of Saskatoon’s major commercial areas over the winter season. The decorations provide a welcoming ambience, supporting the Winter City Strategy by providing more lighting to make the darker winter season more inviting and beautiful.
While some are removed in January, the remainder of the decorations are turned off and removed after the spring equinox.
