Every worker is someone’s someone: slow down and give crews space

May 6, 2026 - 9:00am

TC26-11985
May 6, 2026 - 9:00 am

With construction season ramping up, the City of Saskatoon is urging people to adjust how they move through streets, sidewalks and neighbourhoods where work is underway. These areas aren’t inconveniences to pass through quickly, they’re active job sites where people are doing skilled, often high-risk work. Every worker is someone’s someone.

Across Saskatoon, crews are repairing roads, maintaining water infrastructure, upgrading power systems and completing neighbourhood improvements. This work takes place in changing conditions, alongside live traffic and tight spaces, making awareness from the public a critical part of keeping everyone safe.

“Behind every work zone are people doing their jobs to help improve our community. They’re someone’s parents, partners, children and friends, and many are working just feet away from moving vehicles and heavy equipment for hours at a time,” says Terry Schmidt, General Manager of Transportation & Construction. “When drivers rush, become distracted or are inattentive, the consequences can be serious and put the safety of others at risk. Slowing down and following the guidance in place is one of the simplest ways we can help ensure everyone gets home safely at the end of the day.”

The City is reminding all road users to take a more deliberate approach when encountering work zones:

  • Treat every work zone as a restricted area. Follow posted signs and directions, and do not move or ignore barriers, cones or tape. They are there for your safety, and the safety of workers.
  • Expect work anywhere. Crews may be on roadways, sidewalks, alleys or utility corridors, and work can happen at any time of day.
  • Reduce speed and eliminate distractions. Staying focused protects both workers and the people travelling through the area.

Work zones are a necessary part of maintaining and improving city infrastructure, but they rely on cooperation from the public to function safely. Taking a few extra seconds to slow down or follow a detour helps prevent injuries and keeps projects moving forward.

More information about work zone safety is available at saskatoon.ca/respectworkzones.

Update: Saskatoon continues to keep water safe

May 5, 2026 - 3:45pm

12002
May 5, 2026 - 3:45 pm

Saskatoon Water would like to provide an update related to a fuel spill April 30 in the South Saskatchewan River far upstream at Medicine Hat, Alberta – not near Leader, Saskatchewan – as originally shared; the City regrets this error.

Saskatoon’s water supply is safe and is expected to remain safe. The following is a statement from the Office of the Minister of Environment and Protected Areas of Alberta.

Alberta’s government received notification that a locomotive was leaking diesel as it left the train yard in Medicine Hat, prompting a response from a local environment officer. Most of the spilled diesel spilled on the ground and a small amount went into the river.
The health and safety of Albertans, communities and the environment are always our first priority in these situations. Environmental contractors for both land and water remediation were brought in, and a vac truck was used to clean-up the area shortly after the incident. A thorough inspection of the South Saskatchewan River was completed by boat and drone imagery near the release site and more than 30 kilometres downstream. The contractors reported no sheen or minimal sheen where the diesel entered the river, and no diesel was reported further downstream. Water samples were taken both upstream and downstream and have been submitted for testing.
CPKC* is required to pay for all associated clean-up costs.

City of Saskatoon continues to keep drinking water safe

May 4, 2026 - 1:30pm

UE26-11993
May 4, 2026 - 1:30 pm

Saskatoon Water is aware of a fuel spill in the South Saskatchewan River far upstream near Leader, Saskatchewan. Saskatoon’s water supply is safe and is expected to remain safe.

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency and Water Security Agency have been managing the spill response and advised the City of Saskatoon when the spill occurred.

Diesel is a volatile substance and lighter than water and it is expected to dissipate long before any of the spilled fuel could reach Saskatoon. Even if any spilled fuel were to reach Saskatoon after lake Diefenbaker, the concentration would be far below any level of concern for public consumption. If that were to happen, an expected concentration would be one ten-millionth of a milligram per litre after Lake Diefenbaker – or one part per 10 million litres.

Further ensuring water safety, the City of Saskatoon Raw Water Intake does not gather water from the surface; it uses a mid-stream intake which helps avoid intake of floating substances such as diesel fuel.

Weekly Household Hazardous Waste drop-off days return Wednesday May 6

May 4, 2026 - 10:00am

UE26-11990
May 4, 2026 - 10:00 am

Weekly Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) drop-off days return this week. Beginning Wednesday, May 6, 2026 residents can drop off HHW every Wednesday at the Material Recovery Centre (MRC).

The weekly collection program makes it easier for residents to dispose of items that should not be thrown in regular garbage or recycling bins due to their potential harm to the environment and public health.

Accepted items include aerosols, automotive fluids, cleaners, cylinders, light bulbs, yard chemicals and more. Complete lists of acceptable and unacceptable items are available at saskatoon.ca/hazardouswaste.

HHW will be accepted every Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the MRC, located at 42 Valley Road.

The City encourages residents to take advantage of this free service to ensure these materials are handled in an environmentally responsible manner.

Reminders:

  • The program is open to residents with household products only – no commercial loads will be accepted.
  • Containers used for transporting HHW may not be returned to the participants.
  • Please ensure all containers are safely sealed and clearly labelled.
  • To avoid potentially long line-ups and wait times, ask the Waste Wizard at saskatoon.ca/wastewizard to find other means of recycling and safe disposal.

Thank you for helping us put waste in the right place.

Saskatoon shifts into gear for Spring BYXE Week

May 1, 2026 - 10:00am

TC26-11977
May 1, 2026 - 10:00 am

Saskatoon is set to see more bikes on the road as Spring BYXE Week returns May 9–17, inviting residents to rethink how they get around the city.

Organized by the City of Saskatoon in collaboration with Saskatoon Cycles, the week highlights cycling as a practical option for everyday travel, not just recreation. Activities throughout the week are designed to make riding a more viable option, whether it’s a short trip to work, school or nearby amenities.

A focal point of the week is Bike to Work Day on Thursday, May 14, when commuter stations will be set up across the city during peak hours. Riders can stop for light refreshments and connect with others choosing to travel by bike.

Beyond the events, the campaign reinforces a broader message: choosing to bike can reduce pressure on road networks, lower transportation costs and contribute to a quieter, cleaner urban environment. It also integrates physical activity into daily routines, which can improve both energy levels and overall well-being.

Residents who are new to cycling, or returning after a break, are encouraged to start with short, manageable trips. Planning ahead using Saskatoon’s cycling resources can help identify comfortable routes and build confidence over time. For longer distances, combining transit with cycling remains an option, as city buses are equipped with bike racks.

Participants are encouraged to document their rides and share them using #BYXE, contributing to a visible, community-wide snapshot of how people move through Saskatoon during the week.

Full event listings and participation details are available at saskatooncycles.org/spring-byxe.

Water restrictions extended for some east-side residents

April 30, 2026 - 4:00pm

TC26-11982
April 30, 2026 - 4:00 pm

Water restrictions for some east-side residents are being extended until June 1, 2026. This is due to weather-related construction delays for the Acadia Drive primary water main project, which began on March 23, 2026. Water service will remain safe to consume and reliable throughout the work.

Based on past project modelling and fall 2025 testing, pressure may drop by up to 20 psi (about 40%) in Brevoort Park, College Park, Wildwood, Lakeview, Rosewood, Lakewood Suburban Centre, Lakewood, Briarwood, Greystone Heights, Eastview, and College Park East.

Water pressure is not expected to drop below 40 pounds per square inch, which is still suitable for everyday household use like showering, running appliances and washing dishes. To help keep neighbourhood water pressure as steady as possible during construction, residents in impacted areas are asked to limit outdoor water use by avoiding activities such as lawn watering or using sprinkler systems.

Frequently asked questions:

  • Will I still have water? Yes. Saskatoon Water customers will continue to have safe, high-quality drinking water.
  • Do I need to boil my water? No. Drinking water quality will not be affected. If a boil water advisory is ever required, the City will notify residents.
  • What if I lose water? Outages are not expected. If you experience one, call the Customer Care Centre at 306-975-2476.

This project is needed to deliver long-term water quality and reliability. The City thanks residents for their patience and cooperation during this important work. For more information on the project, please visit saskatoon.ca/AcadiaPWM.

The sweep is on. Sweeping crews are coming to a street near you.

April 30, 2026 - 9:00am

TC26-11975
April 30, 2026 - 9:00 am

The City of Saskatoon will begin residential street sweeping on Monday, May 4, 2026, as crews move into neighbourhoods following early-season work on major routes.

The sweep is on. Operations will progress across the city in phases. Residents can find their sweep date and updates at saskatoon.ca/sweep.

Temporary yellow “No Parking” signs will be installed at least 36 hours before sweeping. Residents are required to move vehicles by 7 a.m. on the posted day to allow crews full access to the curb. Vehicles left in areas with parking restrictions will be ticketed and relocated.

Street sweeping is weather-dependent. Crews are unable to operate effectively in wet conditions, as rain causes debris to stick to the road surface and limits the ability of sweepers to collect material. This can result in incomplete cleaning and may require return visits. If rain impacts operations, schedule adjustments will be communicated.

City Council directs Administration to provide more information for First Avenue Link rapid transit corridor

April 29, 2026 - 4:22pm

TC26-11980
April 29, 2026 - 4:22 pm

After considering an approval report on the First Avenue Link Corridor concept plan changes, City Council defeated the motion as presented. Council has now directed Administration to meet with the Saskatoon Accessibility Advisory Committee to review the accessibility plan. Council also directed the Administration to report back with broader operational considerations, including emergency response planning, emergency access and snow removal plans.

Once this information is received, Council will determine the next steps and will then direct Administration on how to proceed with the Link design on First Avenue.

In the meantime, work continues on the Link project elsewhere in the city, with the College Drive Link corridor and numerous station platforms throughout the city currently under construction. So far, 41station platforms are already built.

Meeting minutes and associated reports are available on the City of Saskatoon website. For more information on the Link rapid transit project, visit saskatoon.ca/link.

City crews tackling potholes with spring blitz

April 29, 2026 - 10:00am

TC26-11974
April 29, 2026 - 10:00 am

With the last of the recent snowfall melting, the City of Saskatoon’s annual pothole blitz is underway, with crews now using hot mix asphalt to complete more permanent, longer-lasting repairs across the city.

Warmer temperatures allow for more durable pothole repairs, following temporary fixes completed during the winter months. Crews are focusing on high-traffic roads and priority areas first, before expanding into residential neighbourhoods.

Residents are encouraged to report potholes using the City’s Report a Pothole Map or by contacting the Customer Care Centre at 306-975-2476 if the issue poses a safety risk.

Drivers are also reminded to slow down and watch for crews working on roadways. More information is available at saskatoon.ca/potholes.

City recognized for excellence, receives Canadian Award for Financial Reporting

April 28, 2026 - 4:15pm

CF26-11956
April 28, 2026 - 4:15 pm

Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting (CAnFR) to the City of Saskatoon for its annual financial report for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2024. This is the 18th time the City has received this award.

The GFOA presented the City with the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting in recognition of the City’s ability to present financial information in a clear, concise, educational and informative manner.

“We are proud to be recognized again by GFOA for strong financial reporting and our continued focus on clarity, accountability and transparency in presenting the overall year-end financial position of the City,” says Kari Smith, Director of Finance. “Our Finance team works hard to meet GFOA high standards and present clear information so residents, taxpayers and stakeholders can better understand the City’s year-end position.”

To be awarded the CAnFR, a municipal government must publish an easily readable and efficiently organized annual financial report, whose contents conform to program standards. Such reports should go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles and demonstrate an effort to clearly communicate the municipal government’s financial picture, enhance an understanding of financial reporting by municipal governments, and address user needs.

The CAnFR Program was established to encourage municipal governments across Canada to publish innovative financial reporting and to maintain a high standard of quality recognized amongst peers.

The attainment of this prestigious award represents a significant achievement by the City of Saskatoon and its financial management team.

City to lower flags in recognition of National Day of Mourning

April 27, 2026 - 4:00pm

ST26-11968
April 27, 2026 - 4:00 pm

The National Day of Mourning is observed annually on April 28. In recognition, flags at all City of Saskatoon facilities will fly at half-mast for the day.

The National Day of Mourning was officially recognized by the federal government in 1991 and commemorates workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness due to workplace-related hazards and incidents. It’s also a day to collectively renew our commitment to improving health and safety in the workplace and to preventing further injuries, illnesses and deaths.

The City of Saskatoon is committed to safety in all we do. The National Day of Mourning is an opportunity to create important awareness about workplace safety and our organization’s commitment to ensure every employee goes home safe and healthy at the end of every workday.

Crews cleaning up City streets following heavy snowfall

April 24, 2026 - 2:15pm

TC26-11967
April 24, 2026 - 2:15 pm

Following approximately 10 centimetres of snow accumulation, and with more in the forecast, a snow event has been declared. Contracted equipment and operators will be deployed to support City crews in maintaining safety and mobility on Saskatoon’s priority streets, including Circle Drive, Idylwyld Drive, 22nd Street, 8th Street and College Drive.

Work will continue day and night, with crews balancing immediate safety priorities with efficient use of resources to maintain driving conditions across the city.

Residents should expect difficult travel conditions, including reduced traction due to icy surfaces beneath the snow, as well as reduced visibility and drifting. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time and avoid unnecessary travel if conditions worsen.

Given the recent amount of snow accumulation, the Civic Operations Centre snow management facility is nearing capacity. It remains open but could be closed on short notice. Due to muddy conditions, the Wanuskewin and Central Avenue snow disposal sites are currently closed.

Drivers are reminded to watch for blue and amber flashing lights and give snow removal equipment the space required to operate safely.

More information, including the City’s winter road maintenance service level, is available at saskatoon.ca/snow.

City crews prepared as heavy snow, blowing wind and slippery conditions forecasted

April 22, 2026 - 2:30pm

TC26-11960
April 22, 2026 - 2:30 pm

Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts a severe weather system for Saskatoon beginning Wednesday. Precipitation is expected to start as rain, transitioning to freezing rain then changing to snow early Thursday morning.

Snowfall is expected to be heavy and rapidly accumulating throughout the day on Thursday, with total accumulation in the range of 15 to 20 cm. Most of the snowfall is predicted Thursday, tapering to lighter snow and flurries into Friday morning. Gusting winds of 70 to 80 km/h are expected to create blowing snow, drifting and widespread reduced visibility.

These conditions are likely to have a significant impact on travel. Icy surfaces beneath accumulating snow are possible and will reduce traction. Drivers will need longer stopping distances. Blowing snow and drifting may lead to sudden visibility changes, particularly on open roadways such as Circle or McOrmond Drive and other priority routes.

Residents should prepare for slower travel, rapidly changing road conditions and potential delays on both Thursday and Friday. Drivers are strongly encouraged to adjust to conditions, allow extra travel time, maintain a safe following distance and avoid unnecessary travel if conditions deteriorate.

Plows, graders and sanders will be on the roads during and after the snow falls. While the snow is falling crews focus on high-traffic routes such as Circle Drive, Idylwyld Drive, 22nd Street, 8th Street and College Drive to maintain safe and passable conditions. Operations will continue day and night as conditions evolve.

Drivers are reminded to watch for blue and amber flashing lights and to give snow removal equipment the space required to operate safely.

Operational planning will account for both the intensity of this storm and conditions following the event. Crews will balance immediate safety priorities with efficient use of resources to maintain safe driving conditions across the city.

If a snow event is declared, residents will be able to follow snow grading progress through the Priority Street Snow Grading Map. More information, including the City’s winter road maintenance service level, is available at saskatoon.ca/snow.

Saskatoon Transit will monitor and adjust service as needed; however, service can be delayed or interrupted by collisions, blown-in streets and bus stops that are not accessible due to snowfall and drifts. Stay informed: check Saskatoon Transit service alerts for detours or temporary bus stop closures and view real-time bus locations on third-party apps like Transit and Google Transit on desktop. Pin the routes you use often and receive service alert push notifications.
