• Fixed-route transit will run holiday service hours on November 11 from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. (normal fares apply).

• OnDemand service will not be available on November 11.
• Access Transit will operate holiday service hours on November 11 from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The City of Saskatoon has lowered flags to half-staff in respect and remembrance of the Honourable Murray Sinclair. Flags will remain lowered until sundown on Sunday November 10, the day of his memorial service. 

An Anishinaabe and member of the Peguis First Nation, Sinclair leaves behind a powerful legacy dedicated to Indigenous justice and advocacy through his work as a lawyer, the first Indigenous-appointed judge in Manitoba and second appointed in Canada. 

In 2009, Sinclair was appointed Head Commissioner of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). He was tasked with investigating the accounts and impacts of Canada’s residential school system, introducing the 94 Calls to Action in 2015. These recommendations formed the basis for the City of Saskatoon’s work in the area of Indigenous Initiatives and promoting reconciliation in our community. 

“Murray Sinclair was one of the greatest nation builders this country has ever known. He was a genius of a leader who knew how to transform hearts and minds through his love and his deep understanding of justice,” says Mayor Charlie Clark. “As people of this land, it is our duty to carry on the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, drawing on the strength and wisdom he shared with everyone. Our deepest condolences to his family and those who loved him.” 

Shortly after the end of the TRC Commission, he was appointed to the Canadian Senate, helping to draft and pass legislation on water animal protection, LGBTQ2S+ rights, and Indigenous languages, rights, and child welfare jurisdiction. 

The Honourable Murray Sinclair will be laid to rest in West St. Paul Manitoba.

Courtesy of RBC, Saskatoon Transit will offer free rides to the Remembrance Day Service at SaskTel Centre on Monday, November 11. The program begins at 10 a.m., with buses leaving from:

• Downtown Special Events Stop (23rd Street and 2nd Avenue):
  • Service every 20 minutes starting at 9 a.m., with the final bus leaving by 10:20 a.m.
• Market Mall:
  • Buses will depart from the mall transit terminal at 9:45 a.m.
• Centre Mall:
  • Buses will also leave from the mall transit terminal at 9:45 a.m.

Return trips from SaskTel Centre will begin immediately following the close of the ceremony.

Free Service for Canadian Armed Forces
Veterans and current Canadian Armed Forces members will be recognized with free transit service all day throughout the system on November 11.

This free bus service is available to veterans, current personnel, cadets, reservists, and a companion. Canadian Armed Forces Transit riders can identify themselves by wearing a military uniform or showing military ID or a CF1 card when boarding.

Providing free transit to veterans and current Canadian Armed Forces members is a way to recognize their significant dedication to the community and Canada.

Trips can be planned using the mobile app Transit or Google Maps Transit in advance to help find the best route.

After the first four days of Advance Polls, November 1 to 4, Elections Saskatoon reports over 19,400 voters took advantage of the ten early voting polling locations across the city. Based on the number of eligible voters, this volume translates to approximately 10% per cent overall turnout.

Eligible voters still have several opportunities over this week and of course on Election Day, November 13, 2024, to mark their ballot for Saskatoon’s next mayor, city councillors and public and separate school board trustees for the next four-year term.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting periods of snow and the risk of freezing rain beginning early Tuesday morning and continuing throughout the day. City crews are fully prepared to manage the road conditions. 

Roadway crews with 17 Sander units and, if needed, 10 Plow trucks will focus on priority streets for the morning commute with de-icing treatments, starting with Circle Drive and expressways, and will continue to maintain city streets as long as the weather persists. 

With snow, freezing rain, and subzero temperatures in the forecast, road conditions can become dangerous. Drivers are encouraged to adjust to winter conditions, keeping a safe distance from other vehicles. 

Please give road equipment the space they need to operate, signaled by their blue and amber flashing lights. Service Alerts will keep residents updated on the need for road maintenance.

Saskatoon Transit is warning residents of a “Saskatoon Public Transport Card” fare scam on social media and through a fraudulent website.

A fraudulent social media account is advertising a scam offer for a $2.00 Go-Pass that supposedly provides six months of unlimited travel. Additionally, a linked website falsely impersonates as an official Saskatoon Transit page, promoting the opportunity to receive one of 500 limited edition cards for six months of unlimited travel through an online survey. This deceptive tactic seeks to mislead individuals into purchasing a fake pass and sharing their personal information.

How to identify a potential scam:

• The scam offers seem too good to be true.
• The website may not be an official webpage or social media account page.
• Requests for personal or financial information are a red flag.

Helpful reminders to help protect residents from potential scammers: 

• The City never requests or collects credit card, bank accounts or any sort of personal information from customers via phone, text, social media, or email. 
• Never give out your personal or banking information, or credit card number over the phone, by text, on social media, by email, or on a non-trusted website. It is a best practice to block suspicious phone numbers, email addresses or social media accounts and delete them after reporting. 
• Do not click on suspicious web links. 

• Always verify information from trusted sources:

Scammers typically use the information gathered to get money or commit identity theft.

Residents should contact their bank if they have become a victim of fraud and report these types of phone or online scams to Saskatoon Police Service at saskatoonpolice.ca/onlinereporting/fraud/ or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, 1-888-495-8501.

Concerned residents may also call the City of Saskatoon to speak with a Customer Service Representative at 306-975-2400. 

Avenue H will be closed between Walmer and Bedford roads starting Tuesday, November 5, at 7:00 a.m. for service connection replacements. Detours will be in place guiding motorists around the work zone. This project is expected to take two days to complete, weather permitting and barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Saskatoon Transit may be affected by these detours. Transit service alerts and real-time bus information are available on third-party apps like Transit and Google Maps Transit on desktop.

The City of Saskatoon is replacing a valve on a water main at Avenue H and 17^th Street West that feeds into the 42^nd Street Reservoir. Drinking water quality is not affected, however as the work is taking place, some residents and businesses in the north end of Saskatoon are experiencing lower than usual water pressure.

There have been reports of lower water pressure in River Heights, Silverwood, Lawson Heights, Hudson Bay Park, Hampton Village and the airport area. These areas may experience lower water pressure for approximately one week, barring any delays or unforeseen circumstances.

The City is now accepting applications for the Spring 2025 Seasonal Commercial Enterprise in Parks Program. This initiative supports sport, recreation and cultural business opportunities in Downtown parks. 

A Seasonal Commercial Enterprise refers to any organization engaged in the sale of goods or services to consumers for a defined period of time. Applicants must support sport, recreation and/or cultural activities to be eligible for the program. The deadline for Spring applications, which runs from May 1 to October 31, is February 15, 2025. Application packages are available at saskatoon.ca/sce or email sce@saskatoon.ca. 

Applications are evaluated based on criteria outlined in the Seasonal Commercial Enterprise in Parks Policy No. C10-026. Once an application has been approved and all required documentation received by the City, a permit and business license will be issued by the City’s Planning & Development Department. The fun doesn’t stop just because the temperature drops! Admission to the Zoo is by donation from November 1 to March 31 each year. Saskatchewan winters typically bring snow and cold temperatures prompting many animals at the Zoo to demonstrate their natural adaptations to handle the coldest months of the year.

The snow leopard, Arctic wolves, Canada lynx and caribou are among some of the many animals that will be embracing the colder temperatures while other zoo animals like the zebras, dingoes and ring-tailed lemurs will be relocating to indoor habitats until warmer temperatures return.

Grizzly bears Mistaya and Koda are getting ready to sleep away the cold winter days and the black-tailed prairie dogs are expected to start hibernation in the coming weeks.

The Café and Gift Shop at the Zoo are closed for the season.

The Fishing Pond at the Forestry Farm Park is closed for the season and will reopen next spring.

The piloted washroom trailer located at the site of the Central Urban Métis Federation (CUMFI) office at 315 Avenue M South will be closed for the season on October 31. 

The washroom trailer officially opened on August 27 and has been accessed over 14,304 times throughout the pilot by people of all ages. The trailer was staffed 24/7 by the Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC) Sawēyihtotān Program, providing a welcoming and safe place. People using this washroom location could use the facilities to wash up, rinse their clothes, have a snack along with a bottle of water or coffee. Sawēyihtotān Outreach also offered additional assistance with accessing emergency shelter and provided transportation and advocacy to connect individuals with other necessary resources. 

“This pilot project has been a very positive experience for the City, Sawēyihtotān, CUMFI and those using the facility,” says Pamela Goulden McLeod, Director of the Saskatoon Emergency Management Organization. “What this project has done is provide a safe place for people to come have a sense of belonging while being treated with dignity and respect. It also acted as an informal navigation centre for anyone who looking for help, shelter and stability.” 

The facility was fully operational for the entire time it was open, with only minor plumbing repairs needed, which were associated with the high volume of users. There was no intentional damage done to the washrooms at any time.  

“The feedback we’ve received from community partners and users has been overwhelmingly positive. The facility and partnership model has proven to be a much-needed resource, and the trailer has been a great success story for our community,” says Goulden McLeod. “We extend our thanks to CUMFI for hosting the washroom trailer, to Sawēyihtotān for staffing the trailer location, to the Saskatoon Friendship Inn for providing daily sandwiches and for all of the residents, businesses and partners who provided their support.”

A total of $700,000 was allocated to the project from the City’s Reserve for Capital Expenditures. To date, approximately $506,300 has been spent on the washroom which includes purchase of and modifications to the trailer, staffing, supplies and maintenance. The used trailer itself cost just under $52,000 to purchase.

The City’s Compost Depot is set to close on Sunday, November 10. Residents can continue to drop off excess yard waste until the depot closes for the season. 

In addition to dropping off yard waste, residents can still take part in the Dig-Your-Own compost program. Residents can self-load up to 1 cubic yard of compost and mulch at no cost, subject to weather and while supplies last.

The Compost Depot is located at Highway 7 and 11^th Street and is open 7 days a week, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:50 p.m. Access to the site is subject to weather and site conditions.

The City Compost Depot does NOT accept elm wood, treated and untreated lumber, building materials, garbage, or any animal waste/litter. Food waste is also NOT accepted for drop-off at the compost depot; selected food waste may be composted at home and all food waste can now be placed in green carts.

To help reduce transportation barriers to voting polls for the provincial and civic elections, Saskatoon Transit will provide a special pass for free transit service on October 28 and November 13, 2024. This free service enables every resident the opportunity to reach their polling station conveniently and affordably.

Find the free pass at SaskatoonTransit.ca or pick one up at the Transit Customer Service Centre, City Hall, Civic Leisure Centres or a Saskatoon Public Library. A printed pass is not required; electronic versions on mobile phones will be accepted. Simply show a printed, downloaded, picture, or screenshot version of the pass to the operator upon boarding.   

The pass is only for use on each election day – October 28 (provincial election) and November 13 (civic election). The pass can be used multiple times on fixed-route, OnDemand and Access Transit and will expire at the end of service each day on October 28 and November 13, 2024

Trips can be planned using the mobile app Transit or Google Maps Transit up to two weeks in advance to help find the best route to a polling station.
