CITY MAKES MONTHLY PASS AT LEISURE CENTRES MORE AFFORDABLE

In response to feedback collected from citizens and customers over the past several months, the City of Saskatoon (City) will be lowering the prices for the monthly LeisureCard pass that provides unlimited drop-in access to the six indoor Leisure Centres, the Fitness Circuit & Terry Fox Track, four outdoor pools, and Cosmo skating rink.

“We heard you, Saskatoon,” says Cary Humphrey, Director of Recreation and Sport. “The declining popularity of the former full-year LeisureCard pass, confirmed by our recent research study, was a clear indication that we needed to make a change to this product.”

Beginning September 1, 2015, the monthly LeisureCard prices will be as follows:

Adult: $45 per month; formerly started at $75 for one month
Youth: $27 per month; formerly started at $45 for one month
Family: $90 per month; formerly started at $150 for one month

“By lowering the prices and simplifying the fee to be one low rate, regardless of how many months you purchase, we anticipate that the new improved LeisureCard will be more attractive to our current, past, and potential customers,” explains Humphrey. “We are reducing the financial barriers to participate in fitness and fun at our Leisure Centres.”

Another benefit to the lower rate will be a “Pick Your Perk” program, which will reward long-term LeisureCard customers with enticing bonuses at Leisure Centres and other civic programs and services. The anticipated launch date for the new reward program is January 2016.

In addition to reduced LeisureCard prices, prices on Bulk Tickets will be reduced to $75.00 for an adult 10 pack of single admission tickets; rates are also available for youth and families. The general drop-in admission prices of $9.80 for adults, $5.90 for youth, and $19.60 for families will be frozen at current rates until 2018.

Eligible low-income residents in Saskatoon may continue to participate in select leisure programs at no cost with the City’s Leisure Access Program.

“The City has a role to ensure recreation is accessible to the public by providing programs and services that are affordable to the broadest range of residents,” says Humphrey.

FITNESS CIRCUIT & TERRY FOX TRACK REOPENED TO THE PUBLIC

The Fitness Circuit & Terry Fox Track, located inside of the SaskTel Sports Centre (150 Nelson Road), has now reopened to the public. The facility features a two-lane 356 metre indoor walking and jogging track and adjacent fitness centre with easy-to-use, circuit-style resistance machines designed to provide an efficient, effective, and safe total body workout in minutes.

The SaskTel Sports Centre was designated as an Emergency Evacuation site to shelter evacuees from northern Saskatchewan who had been displaced by the wildfires. Now that the evacuees have returned home, the facility has resumed regular operations.

The City of Saskatoon sincerely thanks the public for their understanding and support during this time, and hopes to see you at the Fitness Circuit & Terry Fox Track again soon!

ACCESS TO CROCUS PRAIRIE PARK VIA CENTRAL AVENUE TEMPORARILY CLOSED

The City of Saskatoon is currently installing a sanitary force main and preparing to construct a new roadway on Central Avenue. To accommodate the current phase of construction, Central Avenue is closed in both directions between Garvie Road and Agra Road. The force main will move sanitary sewage from Attridge Drive to the Aspen Ridge lift station.

As a result of construction, access to the Meewasin Trail at Crocus Prairie Park via Central Avenue is temporarily closed. The City asks drivers not to enter the construction zone to access the park. Citizens can continue to access the park via the trails at Sutherland Beach.

Construction on this section of Central Avenue is expected to be complete by the end of August, weather permitting.

The City thanks everyone for their patience while this necessary work is carried out.

DUTCH ELM DISEASE IDENTIFIED IN ONE SASKATOON TREE

One case of Dutch Elm Disease (DED) has been confirmed in Saskatoon after an Elm sample sent in to the provincial lab by the City of Saskatoon’s Pest Management staff, came back positive.

In accordance with the City’s DED Response Plan, which requires immediate removal of all positive trees, crews today began removing the infected tree located in the Queen Elizabeth neighbourhood. Also in accordance with the City’s DED Response Plan, inspectors will follow up and search Queen Elizabeth neighbourhood yards in efforts to pinpoint a source.

Saskatoon’s DED Response Plan requires:

-Immediate removal of all positive trees
-Disposal of infected trees at City of Saskatoon landfill
-Sampling of adjacent trees
-Surveillance and testing of private and public trees in the surrounding area with an intensive search for elm material and other sources of infection
-Place five additional elm bark beetle adult pheromone traps in the area to monitor bark beetle populations

“Dutch Elm Disease is a serious disease of the American elm,” says Darren Crilly, Director of Parks. “The disease was introduced into North America in the 1930s, and has wiped out millions of elms across Canada and the United States. Dutch Elm Disease has been present in Saskatchewan since the 1980s and Saskatoon remained free of it, until now.”

American elm trees with DED may start showing symptoms as early as the month of June. Typically, the leaves will start to wilt and turn yellow, then curl and turn brown. Residents who start to notice any of these symptoms, are encouraged to call City of Saskatoon Pest Management at 306-975-3300.

Residents can help prevent DED by:

-Not pruning elms during provincial pruning ban (April 1 to August 31)
-Not storing or transporting any Elm firewood (Provincial regulations prohibit the storing or transporting of Elm firewood)
-Dispose of all Elm wood at the City Landfill

TECHNICAL SUBMISSIONS RECEIVED FOR NCPP & TRAFFIC BRIDGE PROJECT

Technical submissions for the North Commuter Parkway Project (NCPP) and Traffic Bridge have now been received. The deadline for financial submissions is mid-August.

“This is an important milestone and brings us one step closer to replacing and building two much needed river crossings for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists,” says Mike Gutek, Director of Major Projects. “We received a submission from each of the three shortlisted proponents which are now being evaluated.”

The NCPP will see a six-lane bridge link the Marquis Industrial area with the University Heights area, by extending Marquis Drive across the South Saskatchewan River connecting to McOrmond Drive at Fedoruk Drive.

City Council’s decision to replace the Traffic Bridge was made following extensive public consultation and study in 2010 and 2011. The majority of more than 1,800 residents surveyed favoured replacing the Traffic Bridge with a crossing that accommodates all modes of transportation while retaining the architecture of the previous structure and the riverscape of the past century.

As a result City Council approved the recommendation from Administration that the width of the driving lanes should be 3.7 metres and that two 3 metre-wide multi-use pathways to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists be built - one on each side of the bridge.

“Now that the technical submissions have closed, the project design parameters are locked in and the successful proponent will build to meet those requirements,” says Gutek. “We expect a report will go to Council at the end of August to award the contract to the preferred proponent.”

Once the contract is awarded, there will be an approximate 60 day period to achieve financial close with the preferred proponent. At the end of October, a report will be brought back to City Council outlining the financial details of the proposal at which point the final designs will be released to the public.

Two reports, which outline the work-to-date on the Growth Plan to Half a Million (Growth Plan), will be presented to City Council’s Standing Policy Committee on Planning, Development and Community Services on July 20, 2015.

“The importance of growth planning is underscored even more, as the annual mid-year population estimate now calculates Saskatoon’s population at 260,900 people,” Director of Planning and Development, Alan Wallace, says.

“Even if the city doesn’t grow at the high rates we’ve experienced lately, we’re projecting average population increases between 2% and 2.5% over the long term. That is like adding a city the size of Humboldt or Melfort to our city each year,” Wallace explains. “The work we’re doing now will ensure we are ready for that and future growth.”

The first report is the Growth Plan Summary Report #2: Long-Term Possibilities, which provides a detailed assessment of the preliminary long-term recommendations for:

The resulting draft Growth Plan will be presented for confirmation during the final round of public engagement in the fall of 2015.

Once complete, the Growth Plan will help to guide future infrastructure investments so residents will have more choices for how they live and move around the city as Saskatoon grows to half a million people over the next 30 years.

CITY ABSENTEEISM & DAYS LOST REMAIN BELOW NATIONAL AVERAGE: OVERTIME COSTS DECLINING

On average, the number of days missed in 2014 by City workers due to periodic, ongoing medical conditions, and occupational illness is well below the national average. The results highlighting successes in health, safety, absenteeism, and lower overtime are outlined in a report to be presented to the Standing Policy Committee on Environment, Utilities and Corporate Services.

“The City continues to make health and safety the first consideration in everything we do through our Occupational Health and Safety program and other initiatives,” says Catherine Gryba, General Manager of Corporate Performance. “We are making strides towards our goal of zero accidents at work and at home because of our programs that support managers and employees in reducing absenteeism.”

The report to the Committee shows:

The average number of incidents per City employee is substantially below the national average for public sector workers (3.15 incidents for City employees versus 7.7 in the national public sector).
The average number of days lost is well below the national average for public sector workers (7.9 days for City employees, almost three full days less than the national average of 10.6 days for the public sector).

City initiatives, such as the Attendance Support Program and the Health Management System work in cooperation to reduce absenteeism in the workplace while managing workloads. Proper management of absenteeism reduces workload variations, especially for City Services with demand and seasonal fluctuations, and better enables management to measure and utilize strategic overtime effectively.

“We continue to support our employees and managers in identifying factors that contribute to absences, especially where it impacts City services that require overtime to continue to provide a heightened level of service to residents,” says Gryba. “The City has placed increased focus on managing absenteeism and workload fluctuations in order to reduce excessive overtime, which can result in lower productivity, increased absenteeism, missed work due to injury or illness, and higher employee turnover.”

Proper management of absenteeism supports the City’s Strategic Goal of Continuous Improvement and being the best-managed city in Canada.

PERCEIVED QUALITY OF LIFE AND SERVICE LEVEL SATISFACTION RATE HIGH IN 2015 CIVIC SERVICES SURVEY

Perceptions about Saskatoon’s quality of life and satisfaction with the overall level of services provided by the City of Saskatoon rated high in the 2015 Civic Services Survey. Roads and sidewalk repair remain the number one issue among citizens who participated in the annual survey.

“We obtain valuable feedback on a variety of civic issues through the Annual Civic Services Survey,” says Catherine Gryba, General Manager of Corporate Performance. “All of the results are considered when we develop our annual business plan and budget. The feedback helps the City provide high quality services to meet citizen needs.”

When asked which methods the City could use to balance its budget, most citizens said they prefer a combination of increased user fees and property taxes over a reduction in services. On the topic of spending, citizens strongly felt more money should be allocated toward road maintenance, snow and ice maintenance, street crime, affordable housing, accessible infrastructure, growth planning, and traffic management. They would like to see less spending on arts and culture funding, renewing city centre and north downtown, and customer service initiatives.

When it comes to overall services provided by the City, satisfaction remains strong and relatively consistent with previous years, with telephone respondents significantly more satisfied than online respondents.

Other highlights of the 2015 Civic Services Survey include:

Recycling is now considered a top area of citizen satisfaction. Drinking water quality, repair of water main breaks, garbage collection, electrical services reliability, fire protection and police services also rated high.
The use of the City’s website continues to be the preferred information source for citizens.

A total of 500 surveys were completed via telephone and 821 surveys were completed online between May 11 and June 2, 2015. The margin of error for the telephone research is +4.4 percentage points at a 95% confidence interval (19 times out of 20). Margin of error for the online study is not applicable as online research is considered a non-probability proportional sampling technique. SMOKE TESTING IN BUENA VISTA

The City of Saskatoon will be conducting sanitary sewer “smoke” testing in the Buena Vista neighbourhood on Thursday, July 16, as part of an investigation into reports of sewer odours in the area.

During the testing the 1100 block of Coy Avenue will be blocked off to traffic as a non-toxic liquid smoke product is vented into the sewer system through a manhole at Coy Avenue and 8^thStreet. The smoke, which replicates the properties of invisible sewer gases, will be tracked through the system to identify weak points or small openings where sewage or gas could escape and cause an odour.

While the test is being carried out thick, white smoke will be visible exiting from the vent stacks and rooftop drains on houses, catch basins, yard drains tied to the sanitary sewer system, and from any holes or cracks in the contained area. It is possible for the smoke to enter a home through rarely used drain traps. To prevent this, residents in the testing area have been advised to run water into all drains for one minute the morning of the testing.

The smoke itself is an odourless, oil-based product that appears thick and white when activated. It is completely a non-toxic material that has been safely used for testing and simulations for over 20 years.

Testing will begin late morning Thursday, July 16 and run throughout the afternoon.

PROTECTED BIKE LANE DEMONSTRATION PROJECT UNDERWAY – 23RD STREET LANE NOW OPEN

City of Saskatoon (City) officials gathered in Civic Square today with representatives from Saskatoon cycling groups to launch the City’s Protected Bike Lane Demonstration Project and to officially open the 23^rd Street Protected Bike Lane.

A Protected Bike Lane is a dedicated, marked lane for use by people riding bikes. The lane is physically separated from people driving cars by a painted buffer and flexible posts.

The new 23^rd Street Protected Bike Lane runs between Idylwyld Drive and Spadina Crescent East in both directions. As the lane runs through the downtown transit terminal, people using the lane will continue to walk their bikes through the terminal, as per existing rules. A second lane will open in the summer of 2016, on 4^thAvenue from 19^th Street East to 24^th Street East and will connect to the Broadway Bridge.

“Protected Bike Lanes provide another safe option for people to move around our downtown and are part of our continuing efforts to make Saskatoon an attractive, vibrant city, and to improve quality of life,” said Alan Wallace, Director of Planning and Development, for the City. “We also hope the lanes will bring more people into the downtown area so that local businesses can benefit as well.”

In March 2015, City Council approved a recommendation to proceed with a Protected Bike Lane Demonstration Project downtown. The goal of the project is to create a vibrant and healthy downtown by improving cycling as a strategy to increase the attractiveness of the downtown for businesses, residents, visitors, employers and their employees.

Saskatoon Cycles was represented at the event by Hilary Gough. "Cycling infrastructure, such as bike lanes, is a critical component of a bikeable city. We’re excited to see this important step being taken in our downtown and look forward to further improvements that will help make Saskatoon more accessible, and safe, for everyone."

The project will be evaluated over the next 18 months to determine the impact of the lanes on the downtown area. A report, and a recommendation on the future of the project, will be prepared for City Council in early 2017.

According to research conducted prior to the start of the demonstration project, 95% of people surveyed on this topic said they believe the lanes will increase the comfort level of people riding bikes; 85% believe they will improve the accessibility of downtown; 84% believe they will make the downtown more attractive; and 60% also said they would ride their bikes more if they felt safer downtown.

SASKATOON TRANSIT OFFERS FREE BUS SERVICE TO NORTHERN GUESTS

The City of Saskatoon is making Saskatoon Transit service available at no charge to the City’s northern guests (wildfire evacuees). This service will be available immediately (July 10).

Those that wish to take advantage of the complimentary bus service can do so by presenting their Red Cross wristband to Transit drivers upon boarding. This wristband will grant unlimited access to travel anywhere that bus services goes in the City of Saskatoon including the riverbank, downtown core and other City amenities. Individuals can check schedules by using the Trip Planner application at transit.saskatoon.ca or service updates by following @StoonTransit on Twitter.

The City is also working with the Red Cross to facilitate access to the City’s leisure centres, public pools, spray parks, playgrounds, youth centre programs and libraries. As well, the City is coordinating partnerships with Aboriginal community organizations such as the Central Urban Métis Federation Inc. (CUMFI), Saskatoon Tribal Council, Saskatoon Indian Métis Friendship Centre, Wanuskewin Heritage Park, White Buffalo Youth Lodge, as well as northern community associations and members of the Saskatoon business and corporate community.

Currently, there are approximately 300 northern guests at the Henk Ruys Soccer Centre and just over 250 staying at the SaskTel Sports Centre. Thousands more are staying in hotels and with family and friends.

EIGHT NEAR MISSES REPORTED AS DRIVERS DISREGARD WORK ZONE BARRIERS

While the majority of drivers are slowing down, paying attention and respecting work zones some drivers are still disregarding work zone safety measures. So far this year, eight near misses have been reported and all as a result of drivers disobeying barriers and signage.

“During recent work on Warman Road, our crews witnessed 22 vehicles within half an hour ignore barriers and drive through a work zone to get to the Lawson Mall,” says Angela Gardiner, Director of Transportation. “We know it can be frustrating when construction prevents drivers from continuing on their usual route but the signs and barriers are there to keep our workers as well as road users safe.”

Work zone signs and barriers are set up for a number of reasons and at times will remain in place even when workers are not present:

To protect workers and allow them to focus on the job so they can safely and efficiently complete this year’s construction projects

-Protect drivers from hazards on the road
-Allow pavement or concrete to set
-Prevent property or vehicle damage

Construction workers are reporting violations to Police which may result in charges being laid. They are also beginning to set up cameras in work zones to catch offenders. The Saskatoon Police Service enforces the Traffic Bylaw and the Provincial Traffic Safety Act with fines starting at $210.

The City is continuing the most aggressive program of road construction, repair and maintenance ever seen in Saskatoon and to complete this work, we need everyone to make safety a priority.

“We care about the safety of our employees and everyone who uses Saskatoon roads,” says Gardiner. “If everyone does their part, plans ahead and respects construction zones, we will be able to work through the 2015 construction season safely and successfully.”

SASKATOON FIRE DEPARTMENT SENDS MORE STAFF & EQUIPMENT TO LA RONGE

The Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) now has a total of 15 firefighters on the ground in La Ronge, helping to protect the community’s industrial area from area wildfires. The firefighters are on 12 hour shifts as they monitor the area 24 hours per day. In addition to the firefighters, the SFD has sent one fire engine, one water truck, and one brush truck to La Ronge. The City of Saskatoon has offered two more water trucks from the Public Works Division, if requested.

The request for additional logistical support and the need to protect structures within the La Ronge industrial area came from Provincial Emergency Management and Fire Safety on Saturday, July 4. The SFD will be sending more staff on a rotational basis, still ensuring Saskatoon residents that it will not expose the City to any vulnerability by supporting firefighting efforts in northern Saskatchewan.

There have been no further requests for the City of Saskatoon to host additional evacuees of the northern wildfires. Currently, there are approximately 350 guests at the Hank Ruys Soccer Centre and hundreds more are staying in hotels and with family and friends.

The Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) has sent seven firefighters to La Ronge as the northern Saskatchewan wildfires begin to encroach on the community. In addition to the firefighters, the SFD has sent one fire engine and one water truck. The request for additional logistical support and the need to protect structures within the community’s industrial area came from the Province’s Emergency Management and Fire Safety on Saturday, July 4.

The Saskatoon firefighters, fire engine, and water truck arrived in La Ronge by 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 5. The SFD may send more staff on a rotational basis, but is ensuring complete coverage of personnel and equipment within the City. The City of Saskatoon has also offered two more water trucks from the Public Works Division, if requested.

The final phase of the 20^th Street West Streetscape Improvement Project from Avenue G to Avenue H is set to begin on Monday, July 6, 2015, and anticipated to be complete by the end of August.

The following road restrictions will take place during construction, subject to weather conditions:

July 6 to July 20: the intersection of Avenue H and 20^th Street West will be closed.
July 6 to August 3: 20^th Street West westbound will be closed between Avenue G and Avenue H. Two-way traffic will be accommodated in the eastbound lanes.
August 4 to August 31: 20^th Street West eastbound will be closed between Avenue H and Avenue G. Two-way traffic will be accommodated in the westbound lanes.

Businesses located in the area will be open, as usual, during construction, and there will be minimal disruptions to people walking.

This project is part of the 20^th Street Streetscape Improvement Master Plan approved by City Council in 1993. Developed in conjunction with the Riversdale Business Improvement District (BID) and community, the Master Plan called for streetscape improvements along 20^th Street West from Avenue A to Avenue H with the intent of creating a vibrant and cohesive retail corridor that celebrates the unique character and diverse cultures of the area. Phases I and II were completed between 2013 and 2014.

The $3.75 million project, funded from the BID Streetscape Reserve Program, includes aesthetic improvements to the street and sidewalk areas along 20^th Street West such as:

new sidewalk and amenity strip installation;
bus bulbs and corner bulbs to enhance pedestrian safety;
new street furniture, trees, and street banners;
three public art projects; and
design elements that incorporate the Riversdale area’s rich history and heritage.

Household hazardous waste requires proper disposal to reduce risks to humans and animals, and prevent pollution of our land, water and air. These materials should not be placed in your garbage or recycling bins, poured down the drain or toilet, or released into the environment.

To ensure household hazardous materials are safely disposed of or recycled, the City coordinates regular Household Hazardous Waste Days for residents to drop-off these materials. A temporary site will be set up at SaskTel Centre parking lot (101 - 3515 Thatcher Avenue) from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., on the following dates in 2015:

CITY ACCOMMODATING EVACUEES & ENSURES SAFE WORKING CONDITIONS

The Henk Ruys Soccer Centre and SaskTel Sports Centre have been designated as an Emergency Evacuation sites to shelter evacuees from northern Saskatchewan who have been displaced by the wildfires. As a result of the SaskTel Sports Centre being add as an emergency evacuation site, the Fitness Circuit & Terry Fox Track is now closed to the public. Patrons are encouraged to utilize other City of Saskatoon leisure facilities until further notice. LeisureCard holders are reminded they have unlimited access to any of the other leisure facilities, including Cosmo, Lakewood and Lawson Civic Centres, Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre, Saskatoon Field House, and Shaw Centre

The City of Saskatoon is trying to make evacuees as comfortable as possible. We anticipate events such as this during forest fire season and for many years we have kept evacuations at the forefront of our emergency planning. Volunteers are coordinated through the Canadian Red Cross and are not currently required at the emergency evacuation sites. However, those interested in learning more about volunteering with the Red Cross may contact the local office at 306-668-0720 or visit www.redcross.ca. Although appreciated, we are unable to accept donations at Henk Ruys Soccer Centre or the Sasktel Sports Centre.

We take the safety of our outdoor workers very seriously and wherever possible, we limit or reschedule strenuous outdoor activity and allow employees to take more frequent indoor breaks. Due to the air quality and to allow for more frequent indoor breaks of outdoor pool staff, the City has closed George Ward and Mayfair pools. The City of Saskatoon is cautioning customers about a new telephone scam. Customers are receiving calls where the caller claims to represent the City of Saskatoon and says utilities will be disconnected if a payment is not received, and possibly asking for credit card or bank information.

The City of Saskatoon is reminding customers that credit card or bank account information is never collected over the telephone. The City of Saskatoon will send notices regarding outstanding utility account balances in the mail, and use an automated dialer to remind customers to contact Corporate Revenue before utility services are impacted.

Customers are asked to report suspicious calls by contacting Corporate Revenue at 306-975-2400 or the Saskatoon Police Service at 306-975-8300.

TRANSIT SERVICE & CANADA DAY CELEBRATIONS AT DIEFENBAKER PARK

Travel on Saskatoon Transit for fast, convenient service to and from the Canada Day celebrations at Diefenbaker Park this Wednesday, July 1, 2015. Routes 1 and 17 will be running in the vicinity of Diefenbaker Park on their regular Sunday/Holiday service until 9 p.m. Normal fares apply.

Fifteen minutes after the firework show ends, you can also catch a free ride from Diefenbaker Park with Saskatoon Transit. Four special routes will leave Diefenbaker Park from a temporary stop on the east side of St. Henry Avenue, just south of Ruth Street. Buses will follow a designated route, however, drivers will also stop on request at bus stops or locations where it’s safe to stop.

The four special service routes include:

Bus #1 – will travel to the Downtown Terminal, then continue on 2^nd Avenue and Warman Road and will end at the Lawson Terminal

Bus #2 – will travel to the Downtown Terminal, then continue on 22^nd Street and will end at the Confederation Terminal

Bus #3 – will travel via Ruth Street to the Market Mall Terminal, then continue on Taylor Street and Acadia Drive and will end at the Centre Mall Terminal

Bus #4 – will travel via 8^th Street to the Centre Mall Terminal, then continue on to Central Avenue and 115^th Street and will end at the bus stop at Berini Drive and 115^th Street

Access Transit will extend its service hours until midnight on Canada Day so that customers can take in the firework show at Diefenbaker Park. FIREWORKS ON CANADA DAY

The Saskatoon Fire Department is reminding residents that low hazard fireworks can only be detonated on private property between the hours of dusk and 11:00 p.m. on Canada Day (Wednesday, July 1).

Low hazard fireworks are designed for public recreational use and include some roman candles, sparklers, fountains, wheels, volcanoes, mines and snakes that travel less than 50m (160 ft) high. High hazard fireworks are designed for professionals and can only be purchased by persons holding a valid Fireworks Supervisor – Level I or Level II card issued by Natural Resources Canada.

“Even though low hazard fireworks are permitted between dusk and 11:00 p.m. on Canada Day, we still want people to understand the risks associated with fireworks and to exercise extreme caution,” said Fire Marshal Wayne Rodger.

Before sending off low-hazard fireworks, choose the location wisely. Fireworks are only allowed on private property and cannot be detonated on any public spaces. You will need a wide and clear site with no overhead obstructions and the ability to stabilize and/or secure the fireworks. For example, a roman candle needs an area of about 30m (100ft) by 30m (100ft) with room for spectators around that perimeter. To ensure stability, a roman candle needs to be buried to half its length in sand or soil or secured in racks designed for that purpose. Keep in mind that you are responsible for any debris that may land on your spectators or another person’s property.

-Carefully read and follow all the manufacturer instructions on the fireworks.

-After dusk, when you are ready to fire, make sure it is not windy, that everyone under 18 is supervised by an adult and that you always carefully light the fuse at its tip.

-Other than sparklers, never light or hold a lit firework in your hand.

-Wait at least 30 minutes before beginning the clean-up process. At that time, it is a good idea to dispose of used fireworks and debris in a pail of water. Never try to relight or fix the fuse on fireworks that didn’t go off.

-Always be extremely careful when shooting fireworks. Debris or smoldering embers may cause injuries, property damage or fires.

CITY CONTINUES NIGHT WORK FOCUS THIS CONSTRUCTION SEASON

Summer has officially arrived and with it road construction and repairs are ramping up across Saskatoon. This summer, 196 lane kilometres will undergo some type of rehabilitation treatment to extend the life of the roadway.

“We are pleased to report construction season is progressing well with crews completing approximately 58 lane kilometres of road rehabilitation and preservation to date,” says Celene Anger, Director of Construction and Design. “This involves everything from full road reconstruction to repaving and microsurfacing.”

As with last year, projects on high traffic streets will be done at night where it is economical and where work will not cause disruption to residents. This week, repaving work on Warman Road will be completed, with the majority of the work done at night only.

Beginning on Friday, June 26, night resurfacing work will begin on 22nd Street and Circle Drive ramps for approximately four weeks. Next week construction will begin on a new turn lane from Central Avenue southbound to Attridge Drive westbound with the majority of the work to be completed during the evenings. It is necessary for this work to be completed before the North Commuter Parkway project commences and will greatly improve traffic flow in the area.

“We have again been able to combine many large projects into a single road reconstruction contract this year which allows our industry partners to provide workers for overnight shifts,” says Anger. “This approach will minimize disruption to traffic and limit delays to drivers during the day.”

A lot of work goes into planning a construction season and timing projects in a way that limits the impact on drivers and residents. We would like to thank drivers for their patience as construction continues this summer.

During the evenings it becomes even more important for drivers to slow down, pay attention and respect work zones. Watch for pedestrians and work crews and for everyone’s safety, please obey all detours, signs and barriers.
