Heavy rain causing localized flooding, caution advised

June 20, 2022 - 9:07am

UE22-3204

Saskatoon has experienced heavy rain today with the east side of the city seeing the heaviest rain accumulations so far.

Fire and water/sewer crews are responding to several calls related to flooding. Drivers are asked to immediately avoid Circle Drive between College Drive and Taylor Street and between Preston Avenue S and McEown Avenue on Louise Street. Barricades are now in place in these areas.

Residents are advised to avoid driving in these areas if possible and not to enter areas that have experienced localized flooding. Anyone encountering flooding on a street should take an alternate route, as deep water can damage a vehicle and cause it to stall. Please report emergencies such as stranded vehicles, missing manholes and street or underpass flooding to the 24 Hour Customer Service Centre at 306-975-2476.

To reduce the risk of damage to property, residents should ensure downspouts disperse water at least two metres (six feet) away from the home foundation.

Detours are in place for Saskatoon Transit routes 6, 19 and 83 - please check transit service alerts for the latest details.

Environment Canada is predicting the potential for more rain in the forecast this week.

For information about possible disruptions to City services due to potential heavy rain, including leisure services, detours, and closures, citizens are encouraged to monitor Service Alerts at saskatoon.ca or on Twitter follow @yxeservicealert.

46th Annual Civic Pancake Breakfast successfully raises nearly $10k for United Way Saskatoon & Area!

June 20, 2022 - 5:59am

ST22-3202

Well done Saskatoon! Flip flip hurray! We’re thrilled to share the weather cooperated and an excellent crowd came out to attend the 46th Annual Civic Pancake Breakfast on Thursday, June 16. We had fun battering, buttering and serving up 1377 hearty pancake breakfasts to successfully raise $9783.00 (including tips) for United Way Saskatoon & Area with the help of our breakfast attendees, volunteers and valued sponsors.

For the first time, the fundraising event featured an Act of Kindness board, sponsored by Saskatoon City Employees Credit Union: 83 extra breakfast tickets were generously purchased and donated for someone in need of a hot breakfast that morning. Unused breakfast ticket sales were donated to United Way Saskatoon & Area and reflected in the final donation amount. It was great to see community members help pay it forward with kindness for someone in need.

The entertainment stage kept things exciting all morning with a diverse range of talented musicians and dancers from traditional Ukrainian dancers to lively Métis fiddlers. As always, the spirited relay races, Saskatoon Police Service and Saskatoon Fire Department vehicles, educational City team displays and beloved furry friends Sarge (Saskatoon Police Service), Bruiser the Bulldog (Saskatoon RUSH) and Poke Check (Saskatoon Blades) filled the morning with loads of fun.

The City of Saskatoon is committed to environmental stewardship and working together to have environmentally friendly and sustainable practices for our organization and the community at large. In our commitment to strive for a zero-waste breakfast event each year, the final waste tally/results for this year’s breakfast are as follows:

In total, we were able to divert a whopping 89.8kg (or 197.97 lbs!) of waste from the landfill, broken down as:

  • 77kg (63.2%) of compostable/organic waste
  • 12.8kg (10.5%) of recycling

Our non-recyclable garbage total was 32kg (or 70.54 lbs) (26.3%) and mainly consisted of single-use plastics and film.

We were able to achieve this by using compostable cutlery, plates, and cups and purchasing recyclable items such as beverage tetra paks or items in bulk for toppings.

All green cart materials were sent to City of Saskatoon Compost depots to be turned into usable soil, with blue cart materials sent within Canada/North America to be made into new household packaging materials.

The City of Saskatoon extends a grateful thank you to all our volunteers and our valued breakfast sponsors. We could not hold this breakfast without your generous support!

Our 2022 Pancake Breakfast Sponsors included:

  • Federated Co-operatives Limited
  • Van Houtte Coffee Services
  • Sheraton Cavalier
  • Handy Special Events
  • Saskatoon Media Group
  • Rawlco Radio
  • CUPE 59
  • Saskatoon City Employees Credit Union
  • Discover Saskatoon (formerly Tourism Saskatoon)
  • Complete Technologies
  • Pelican Signs
  • Exempt Staff Association (ESA)
  • Saskatoon Civic Middle Management Association (SCMMA)
  • Saskatoon Firefighters Local IAFF80
  • Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce
  • Evolution Cash

Due to COVID-19, the last Civic Pancake Breakfast was held in 2019, donating $4650 to United Way Saskatoon & Area, having served 981 pancake breakfasts.

For over 50 years, United Way Saskatoon & Area has worked to positively impact the lives of vulnerable children, youth, and their families in our community by identifying and addressing barriers.

Rain or shine, it’s time to Rock Your Roots for Indigenous Peoples Day!

June 20, 2022 - 2:02am

ST22-3189

The Rock Your Roots Walk for Reconciliation takes place tomorrow (June 21) on National Indigenous Peoples Day. This walk is one way to demonstrate a commitment to Reconciliation, honour Residential School Survivors, and work towards an inclusive community.

Everyone is welcome to attend and join the walk. Cultural performers from across the city have been invited to ‘rock their roots’ along the walk route by sharing a piece of their culture and showcasing Saskatoon’s incredible diversity. Walk participants are welcome to wear their cultural regalia, an EveryChildMatters shirt, or any other orange shirt.

Rock Your Roots is put on by Reconciliation Saskatoon, which the City of Saskatoon co-chairs along with the Office of the Treaty Commissioner. The event, attended by thousands in past years, was first held in 2016 with attendance growing each year. The intent is to answer the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's Calls to Action.

Rock Your Roots will go ahead, rain or shine. The walk takes place between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Participants should arrive for 10:00 a.m. at the start location—in Victoria Park across from Legion Branch 63 on Spadina Crescent West. A news release with more information is available here. Or visit saskatoon.ca/Indigenous.

Saskatoon Field House Track and Facility Closure

June 15, 2022 - 1:30pm

CY22-3181
June 15, 2022 - 1:30 pm

The City of Saskatoon is preparing for a temporary closure of the Saskatoon Field House to improve the user experience at this popular leisure facility.

This summer, the track and field surface will be repainted to repair the lines that are beginning to wear off. The City has been working with the floor manufacturer and contractor to implement a long-term solution that will resolve the issue of paint flaking and not adhering to the floor surface.

For the maintenance to take place, the facility will be closed as follows:

  • June 23 to July 13: Track closed
  • July 4 to 11: Full facility closure.  For the health and safety of patrons and staff, the facility will be closed during the painting process to allow the paint product to cure and for the scents from the product to be minimized prior to public use.
  • July 12: Facility, fitness room, and meeting rooms reopen
  • July 14: Track reopens (walking only)
  • July 24: Racquet sports resume

Patrons are encouraged to try out the City’s other indoor tracks during this time. The Shaw Centre (122 Bowlt Crescent) offers a three-lane, 165 metre Hamm Walking Track for walking and light jogging and the Terry Fox Track (150 Nelson Road, located inside the SaskTel Sports Centre) boasts a two-lane, 365-metre track.  For additional Leisure Centre options, visit saskatoon.ca/leisurecentres.

Drop-in program information including facility, fitness and weight room hours, public swim sessions and fitness programs, for the six indoor Leisure Centres, is listed on Leisure Online.

The City takes pride in being able to house a high-performance track for the community and competitive athletes to enjoy and appreciates your understanding as we work towards a long-term solution to this issue.

City celebrates completion of Wastewater Treatment Plant Digester and Heating Upgrades project

June 15, 2022 - 10:00am

UE22-3174
June 15, 2022 - 10:00 am

Today, the City of Saskatoon announced that work is now completed on the Digester and Heating Upgrades project at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).

The 3-year, $48.2 million project is funded by the Government of Canada ($9.5 million) and Government of Saskatchewan ($9.5 million) through their New Building Canada Fund, with a $29.2 million investment by the City of Saskatoon.

“Investments in modernizing wastewater infrastructure address communities’ needs and help protect the environment. By partnering with Saskatchewan to upgrade Saskatoon’s Wastewater Treatment Plant, our Government is supporting the local economy while ensuring residents benefit from improved water quality and healthier local ecosystems,” said the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities.

“Reliable local water systems are important to position Saskatchewan communities for growth and attract new business,” Saskatoon Riversdale MLA Marv Friesen said on behalf of Don McMorris, Saskatchewan’s Minister of Government Relations. “The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to invest $9.5 million toward this important wastewater infrastructure project in Saskatoon, which will benefit the local economy, residents and environment.”

“As our city continues to grow, it’s important to maintain our high standards and stewardship in protecting people and property downstream from Saskatoon,” said Mayor Charlie Clark. “The investments in a new digester and heating upgrades at the Wastewater Treatment Plant will help us meet demand by improving capacity, sustainability, as well as maintaining our high-quality standards into the future. The expansion includes an exciting sustainable energy recovery process that will recycle biogas to be used as fuel in boilers and solid matter as nutrients for local and nearby crops.”

The new digester is the Wastewater Treatment Plant’s fourth and will improve capacity to allow the plant to maintain Water Security Agency processing standards whenever another digester is taken out of service for maintenance. The digesters are large circular tanks that hold the solids removed during the wastewater treatment process. The solids are deprived of oxygen to allow bacteria to form and break the solids down, and methane biogas is produced during the process. The methane biogas helps heat the WWTP, which in turn, reduces reliance on the use of natural gas for heating. Boiler upgrades and the installation of a methane biogas treatment filter were also a part of the project.

To learn more about the Digester and Heating Upgrades project, visit saskatoon.ca/digester.

Summary of Facts

  • Construction on the fourth digester and Heating and Gas Scrubbing Building began in 2019 and was completed in 2021, ahead of schedule and under budget.
  • Digesters are the last stage in the wastewater treatment process. The solids removed during the treatment process are held in an oxygen deprived environment to allow bacteria to form and break the solids down.
  • The digesters produce two types of renewable resources; biogas (energy) and biosolids (soil nutrient).
  • This expansion includes a new sustainable energy recovery process that will condition biogas to be used as fuel in the boilers while the solid matter is used as nutrient for local crops.
  • Construction of a fourth digester tank improves capacity and allows the City to maintain Water Security Agency processing standards when another digester is taken out of service for maintenance purposes.
  • Upgrades to boilers were also made to accommodate the additional heat that will be required to run all four digesters.
  • Now that construction is complete, residents can no longer see an open flame at the Wastewater Treatment Plant as the flare has been replaced with two enclosed flares.

Rock Your Roots is put on by Reconciliation Saskatoon, which the City of Saskatoon co-chairs along with the Office of the Treaty Commissioner. The event, attended by thousands in past years, was first held in 2016 with attendance growing each year. The intent is to answer the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's Calls to Action by demonstrating a commitment to Reconciliation, honouring Residential School Survivors, and working towards an inclusive community.

“The significance of a walk can be attributed to the Sunday walks in residential schools; this was often the only time when siblings and cousins of different genders might be reunited,” says Judy Pelly, a Residential School Survivor and member of the Rock Your Roots Walk organizing committee. “It’s meaningful for organizers to see Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples come together in this way.”

Individuals of all ages are invited to attend, including groups representing organizations, workplaces, and schools. Cultural performers from across the city have been invited to ‘rock their roots’ along the walk route by sharing a piece of their culture and showcasing Saskatoon’s incredible diversity.

“This walk is an opportunity to learn about and honour Indigenous history as well as celebrate the cultural mosaic that is our community,” says Shirley Isbister, President of the Central Urban Métis Federation Inc. (CUMFI). “It’s an inclusive event that welcomes everyone to participate; I’m really hoping that we’ll see a great turnout.”

“Rock Your Roots is an opportunity to bring our community together to understand and be educated on residential schools that have negatively impacted Indigenous peoples,” says Saskatoon Tribal Chief Mark Arcand. “This walk is a sign of Reconciliation and a commitment to change for the better, so that all people can have a quality of life.”

Walk participants are invited to wear their cultural regalia, an EveryChildMatters shirt, or any other orange shirt. Rock Your Roots t-shirts – with all proceeds directed to programming and activities for Rock Your Roots – can be ordered by emailing RockYourRootstshirts@gmail.com.

“Rock Your Roots represents an acknowledgment of the multi-generational impacts of residential schools and a commitment to Reconciliation,” says Saskatoon Mayor Charlie Clark. “It’s a public demonstration of support for residential school attendees and those lost. It’s a promise to work towards a future that affords every member of our community equal opportunity.”

The Rock Your Roots Walk for Reconciliation event takes place on National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21) in Victoria Park between 10:00 and 11:30 a.m. The start location is in Victoria Park near Legion Branch 63 on Spadina Crescent West. All are welcome. More information is available at saskatoon.ca/Indigenous.

City receives federal funds for Farmers’ Market Building project

June 8, 2022 - 7:23am

CY22-3160

The City is pleased to announce the approval of $750,000 in Government of Canada funding through PrairiesCan under the Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF) for the interior renovations of the Farmers’ Market Building at River Landing.

“Our government is pleased to support infrastructure projects through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund that provide Canadians with opportunities to connect and explore their communities,” said the Honourable Daniel Vandal, Minister for PrairiesCan. “The renovated Saskatoon Farmers’ Market Building will continue to be an important hub of social activity and a favourite source for fresh produce and locally produced goods.”

The City is currently working with consultants Henry Downing Architects and Stantec Consulting to complete the interior design, plan mechanical and other infrastructure upgrades, and manage the construction project. The renovation project will upgrade the washroom facilities and mechanical systems, as well as prepare permanent tenant spaces for the building’s intended use as a public market with a dedicated seasonal outdoor farmers’ market. Construction on the project is estimated to begin fall 2022.

“This important investment will help to revitalize the Farmers’ Market Building and bring even more activity to River Landing,” said Mayor Charlie Clark. “This exciting renovation project will give residents and visitors a world class experience when they buy goods and produce from our local producers and artisans.”

To achieve the goal of establishing a fully animated Farmers’ Market Building, the renewal project is estimated to cost $1.65M. Funding of $400,000 has been allocated from the City’s Civic Building Comprehensive Maintenance reserve, $1.1M in capital funding was secured through the 2022/2023 budget deliberations and $150,000 was supported as a post-budget request in 2021 to hire the Design Consultant.

The City is working to complete a lease agreement with Ideas Inc. to operate the new public market at River Landing a minimum of six days a week and provide a vibrant community destination and gathering place that will focus on Saskatchewan produce and content.

Street Stall Saturdays, an outdoor market, has returned to Market Square in River Landing for the 2022 growing season.

For more information on the Farmers’ Market Building at River Landing, visit saskatoon.ca/farmersmarket.

Prairie Butterfly House at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo

June 8, 2022 - 10:00am

CY22-3159
June 8, 2022 - 10:00 am

The Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo (Zoo) is entering the final phase of development for the Prairie Butterfly House. The new exhibit at the Zoo will be home to several species of butterflies as well as a variety of plants and flowers. The Prairie Butterfly House will provide an opportunity for guests to learn more about pollinators and the important role they play in our ecosystem. Depending on the season, guests will be able to spot a variety of butterflies including:

  • Buckeye
  • Julia
  • Monarch
  • Zebra Longwing
  • Black Swallowtail
  • Giant Swallowtail
  • Palamedes
  • Polydamas

“Pollinators (butterflies) are some of the most important animals on the planet,” says Jeff Mitchell, Zoo Manager. “The Prairie Butterfly House will cultivate an exceptional learning environment where visitors can develop an understanding and passion for what pollinators do and how important they are to our environment.”

Several organizations played a role in the development of the Prairie Butterfly House. Through PrairiesCan, funding of $177,320 under the Tourism Relief Fund was provided for the construction of the Prairie Butterfly House from the Government of Canada.

“Canada’s prairie landscape is rich in flora and fauna, and the new Prairie Butterfly House will highlight some of the smallest creatures that contribute a lot to our ecosystem. Our government is proud to invest in this facility at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo through the Tourism Relief Fund. Residents and visitors to Saskatoon will be able to see the beauty and environmental impact of butterflies for years to come,” said the Honourable Daniel Vandal, Minister responsible for PrairiesCan.

PrairiesCan funding under the Tourism Relief Fund supports tourism operators through contribution agreements. The Tourism Relief Fund empowers tourism businesses to create new or to enhance existing tourism experiences and products to attract local and domestic visitors. Tourism Relief Funding focuses on projects that position communities to take advantage of post-pandemic opportunities, as well as supporting destination development prospects in line with objectives set out in the Federal Tourism Growth Strategy.

A special thank you to the Saskatoon Zoo Foundation and all the Prairie Butterfly House sponsors who contributed to the development of the new exhibit.

  • PrairiesCan
  • Norplex Business Centre
  • Hunter Family
  • Duval Family
  • Ultravision Construction
  • one-mouse graphic design
  • Dutch Growers
  • ADA Architects
  • Laser Impressions
  • ASL Paving
  • ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems Canada
  • Saskatoon Zoo Foundation

“The Prairie Butterfly House will further enrich the guest experience at the Saskatoon Zoo,” says Saskatoon Zoo Foundation Executive Director, Dawn Woroniuk. “This exhibit was made possible thanks to a number of donors and contributors, we are especially grateful to the Government of Canada, Norplex Business Centre and the Hunter and Duval Families. By supporting the Saskatoon Zoo Foundation, we can continue to connect citizens to nature through education, research and conservation while building for the future for this much-loved tourist attraction.”

Residents will have their first opportunity to preview the space on Saturday, June 11, with the official opening to take place later this summer. The Zoo is open daily from 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. visit saskatoon.ca/zoo to plan your next visit.

Summer park maintenance in full swing

June 7, 2022 - 9:00am

CY22-3143
June 7, 2022 - 9:00 am

Summer is almost here, and parks maintenance activities are now in full swing for the more than 2,130 hectares of parks, sport fields, naturalized areas and other open spaces throughout Saskatoon. These spaces are diverse and require a range of care and management techniques.

Some of the main park maintenance service levels in the spring and summer months include:

Mowing

  • During the regular mowing season (May 15 to September 15) irrigated parks are mowed once per week while non-irrigated parks are mowed once every two weeks.
  • Contracted services provide litter picks and mowing cycles to over 400 hectares of Circle Drive and other major freeway corridors and landscape areas.

Waste Collection

  • Emptying of garbage receptacles in parks occurs at minimum once per week from May 15 to October 15.
  • Litter control is ongoing in all naturalized park areas and along Circle Drive and other major freeways.

Shrub Beds and Flower Pots

  • Shrub bed maintenance occurs from May 15 to September 15.
  • Planting flowers in over 100 park beds and distributing 1,000 flower pots to Business Improvement Districts and major centre medians.

Irrigation

  • Sport fields receive irrigation application services at 38mm of water per week.
  • General park areas and neighbourhood fields begin to receive irrigation application services where available at 25mm of water per week.

Weed Control

  • Herbicides have not been used since 2004 to control broadleaf weeds, such as dandelions, on park turf and sports fields. Instead, Parks uses established cultural turf practices (i.e., mowing, fertilizing and irrigation where available) to improve the condition of turf areas. Aeration and topdressing are also applied to sports fields.
  • Only when necessary, provincially licensed and trained Parks staff apply spot applications of herbicide to eliminate weeds in shrub beds, tree wells, and on hard surfaces such as asphalt pathways and concrete medians. Herbicides are also used to control noxious and prohibited weeds. Warning signs are placed in areas of herbicide application.

For a full list of park maintenance service levels, visit saskatoon.ca/parkmaintenance.

June 3, 2022 - 11:00 am

Following street sweeping on major roads, City crews move on to pressure washing seven bridges, 47 overpasses and 21 pedestrian crossings on Monday, June 6. Structure washing occurs weekly overnight Monday through Thursday, from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. until the middle of July, barring any unforeseen circumstances and weather permitting.

Please watch for and obey lane restrictions and signs to safely move past workers and their equipment.

Ready, Set, Swap! Citywide Curbside Swap happening Saturday, June 4

June 3, 2022 - 3:13am

UE22-3151

The Curbside Swap is bigger and better in 2022 and offers two opportunities for Saskatoon’s residents to participate in a citywide treasure hunt and help reduce the number of reusable items that end up in the landfill.

The first event will take place this Saturday, June 4 (8:00 a.m.– 6:00 p.m.) and another event will take place in September at a date to be announced later.

Join the effort in helping to reduce the number of unwanted reusable items that end up in the landfill.

To participate in the Curbside Swap, place your gently used items on your property and mark them as “free” for anyone to take. Residents may also go out in search of items that other residents are giving away.

It is free to sign up for a swap. Visit saskatoon.ca/curbsideswap to sign up and promote your swap using the online listing tool as well as event tools, information on guidelines, and a list of acceptable and non-acceptable items. Common "swappable" items include furniture, electronics, sporting equipment, books, tools, and much more!

For items that are not collected by 6pm, residents are encouraged to visit saskatoon.ca/wastewizard or get the Saskatoon Waste Wizard app to find ways to divert their items from the landfill.
