Saskatoon Zoo Becomes Certified Sensory Inclusive Facility in Partnership with KultureCity

The Saskatoon Zoo is proud to announce its official certification as a Sensory Inclusive facility through a partnership with KultureCity, a leading nonprofit in sensory accessibility and inclusion. This milestone marks a significant step in the Zoo’s commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all guests, especially individuals with sensory processing needs.
As part of this initiative, Sensory Bags are now available at the Zoo Admission gate. These complimentary bags are available for checkout with a valid ID and include KCVIP badges to help staff identify and support guests with sensory needs, fidget tools, noise-canceling headphones and other helpful resources. Each item is thoroughly cleaned between uses to ensure safety and comfort.
“Zoos are naturally sensory-rich environments, which can be overwhelming for individuals with sensory sensitivities,” said Jeff Mitchell, Zoo Manager. “By offering sensory tools and staff training, we’re making the Zoo a more accessible and enjoyable place for everyone.”

Spadina Crescent closed between 22nd and 23rd streets on Friday

Spadina Crescent will be closed between 22nd and 23rd streets on Friday, September 5, starting at 5:00 a.m. for the Colliers Cup Charity Street Hockey Tournament. Detours will be in place guiding motorists around the event. This closure is expected to be lifted after 8:00 p.m., weather permitting and barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Scheduled tree maintenance begins in Brevoort Park, Exhibition, Lawson Heights, Mount Royal, and Westmount
September 2, 2025 - 10:00am
Starting Tuesday, September 2, 2025, crews will begin pruning trees on civic property in Brevoort Park, Exhibition, Lawson Heights, southwest Mount Royal, and Westmount as part of the City's Boulevard Tree Maintenance Program. Tree maintenance in these neighbourhoods will continue until December 15, 2025. The remainder of Mount Royal will be pruned in early 2026.
The Boulevard Tree Maintenance Program follows a regular pruning cycle to help preserve the health of the City's tree inventory, eliminate hazards and provide clearance from buildings, signs, streetlights and utility wires.
Tree maintenance often requires road restrictions. The City reminds pedestrians, cyclists and drivers to ensure safety is a priority by respecting the work zone and obeying all road restrictions and signage.

Bike lane demonstration project to be removed from 23rd Street East
September 2, 2025 - 9:00am
The City will be removing the bike lanes on 23rd Street East in downtown Saskatoon starting Wednesday, September 3.
Work is expected to take one week to complete, and the curb lane, parking lane, and bike lane will be closed during this time. Sidewalks will remain open.
The 23rd Street bike lanes were installed as part of a demonstration project in 2015, which was intended to end after two years.
At its June 2025 meeting, City Council resolved to remove the demonstration project in 2025. Future planning for the 23rd Street protected bike lanes will occur as part of the 23rd Street Greenway, a component of the City Centre and District Plan.
The City continues to focus on opportunities for improved cycling infrastructure throughout Saskatoon.

New neighbourhood bikeway installed on Munroe Avenue

The City of Saskatoon continues to expand its cycling network, with the completion of a neighbourhood bikeway (using rapid deployment techniques) along Munroe Avenue between College Drive and 14th Street.
A reduced speed limit of 30 km/h in this section of Munroe Avenue will take effect on Sunday, August 31. A reduced speed limit is an important component of a neighbourhood bikeway to help create an environment that is comfortable for all levels of cyclists.
The Munroe Avenue Bikeway was installed using adaptable materials such as signs, pavement markings and pinned rubber curbs, which allows the City to adjust the design as needed to address concerns. The installation of this neighbourhood bikeway marks another push forward in making Saskatoon a bicycle-friendly city.
The Munroe Avenue corridor was approved as a neighbourhood bikeway by City Council in May 2024. This bikeway connects to the 14th Street Bikeway and provides access to the University of Saskatchewan.

Record Dutch elm disease cases identified: City urges action for “ecological emergency’”

- Never storing elm wood or branches. Don’t buy or take elm wood from anyone and don’t burn it.
- Following the provincial pruning ban (April 1 to August 31). Elm bark beetles are attracted to freshly cut wood and are most active during this time period.
- Disposing of elm wood at the Saskatoon Landfill. All disposal of elm wood at the Landfill is free.
- Do not take elm to the Compost Depot or put it in your green bin. Dispose of it immediately at the Saskatoon Landfill.
- Immediate removal of the positive tree(s) and disposal at the City landfill
- Increased surveillance of the surrounding area to search for stored elm wood
- Sampling of symptomatic trees within one kilometre of the infected tree
- Continuing regular elm surveillance and cyclical pruning of trees in parks and on boulevards
The City of Saskatoon has confirmed a record 12 positive cases of Dutch Elm Disease (DED) . These cases are widespread and not concentrated in any particular neighbourhood. In addition to the lab-confirmed cases, there are an additional seven trees elm inspectors have identified with very evident DED symptoms and will be removed proactively as a precaution These figures represent the greatest-ever number of DED cases in Saskatoon.
“We cannot be clearer than this: DO NOT store elm wood on your property,” says Thai Hoang, Director of Parks. “Keeping elm wood – whether it is to burn in your fire pit or for other uses – threatens our historic tree canopy which we all love so much. About a quarter of our urban forest is elm. This is not a minor issue—it is an ecological emergency.”
DED is a devastating and aggressive fungal infection that poses a critical threat to elm populations worldwide. Once introduced, it spreads rapidly often killing mature trees within a single growing season. The disease has already decimated millions of elms across North America and Europe, erasing entire urban canopies and altering ecosystems. Its impact is irreversible without swift and strategic intervention. Failure to act not only endangers the survival of these iconic trees but also compromises biodiversity, soil stability, and the aesthetic and environmental value of our communities.
City Council increased the Parks budget to prevent the spread of DED, but Hoang reminds Saskatoon residents they also have a role to play–by checking their properties for elm wood.
City staff have already disposed of 8720 kg of elm wood during neighbourhood sweeps in areas affected by previous DED tree removals. That’s more than the average weight of an African elephant, highlighting the scale and urgency of the response.
Hoang says typically the leaves on American elm trees with DED will start to wilt and turn yellow, then curl and turn brown. He says if anyone suspects an unhealthy elm tree or are unsure of what type of firewood they have, they can take a photo and complete the online form or call Urban Forestry at 306-975-2890.
Residents can help prevent Dutch elm disease by:
“We’re getting a better idea of how the Saskatoon landscape would change if DED were to keep progressing, but it can be curtailed; get rid of elm wood and if you’re not sure what you have, send us a picture.”

City of Saskatoon 2024 Annual Report now available online

- Savings in software licenses and insurance costs also contributed to the overall surplus.
The City of Saskatoon has released its 2024 Annual Report to the public having received the opinion of the external auditor. Per The Cities Act, the 2024 Audited Financial Statements and Financial Reports were presented to City Council for information on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
“The 2024 Annual Report highlights the City’s progress on major projects and initiatives across our 13 Business Lines, our achievements and ongoing priorities as set out in the Multi-Year Business Plan and Budget, and the City's financial position at the end of 2024,” says Clae Hack, Chief Financial Officer.
The City had a positive financial year in 2024 due to several contributing factors:
The City’s Financial Position remained in a healthy position at 2024 year-end with the balance of all reserves at $359.4 million.
Highlights of the Consolidated Financial Statements are included in the Summary of Consolidated Financial Statements (Appendix 2).
Award-winning financial reporting and top tier credit status continued in 2024
The City of Saskatoon received the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Canadian Award for Financial Reporting for its 2023 Annual Report, marking the 17th time the City has received this prestigious honor. The 2024 Annual Report will once again be submitted to GFOA to determine its eligibility for another award.
S&P Global Ratings (S&P) reaffirmed the City of Saskatoon credit rating with the highest rating possible, a ‘AAA’ credit rating with a “Stable” outlook. The City has maintained the ‘AAA’/Stable credit rating for 23 years since S&P first began affirming the City’s credit rating in 2002.
The 2024 Annual Report reflects the City’s ongoing dedication to continuous improvement, accountability to the public we serve, transparency, and clarity in financial reporting.

Drivers reminded to stay alert as students return to school

As students return to school, motorists are reminded to expect increased pedestrian activity near schools and post-secondary campuses.
School zones near elementary schools have posted speed limits of 30 km/h, and drivers must slow down when travelling through these zones between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Drivers do not have to reduce their speed when travelling through high school areas without a posted limit.
It is important to stay alert and pay close attention while driving near schools. Getting children safely to and from where they learn and play is everyone’s responsibility.
The penalty for speeding in a school zone starts at $170 with additional fines for every kilometre over the speed limit.
U-turns are not permitted in school zones around both elementary and high schools.

Projects that take place between November 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026 will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, September 19, 2025.

City of Saskatoon declares Friday, August 29 “Green & White Day”

The City of Saskatoon is officially declaring Friday, August 29, 2025, as “Green & White Day” in celebration of the 60th annual Labour Day Classic, which will see the Saskatchewan Roughriders take on their long-time rivals, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Sunday, August 31.
The declaration follows last week’s exciting announcement that Saskatoon will host the Roughriders for a pre-season game in May 2026 — a first for the city since the early 1990’s, and a major moment for local football fans.
To mark the occasion, a retro Roughriders Team flag will be raised at Civic Square and residents are encouraged to wear their Rider green and white throughout the day to show their community spirit and pride.
Mayor Cynthia Block said the celebration reflects how the Roughriders represent all of Saskatchewan, including Saskatoon.
“The Roughriders may play their home games in Regina, but they belong to all of Saskatchewan — and that includes Saskatoon. Declaring Green & White Day is a way for us to show our pride, our excitement for the Labour Day Classic, and our part in Rider Nation as we look forward to hosting the team here in 2026,” said Mayor Block. “I’ll have my green and white ready — Go Riders!”

City parking pay stations upgrade underway

- More Convenient: The new pay stations will accept multiple payment options, including debit and credit card tap, Apple and Google Pay and digital wallets, making parking quicker and easier.
- More Reliable: Improved hardware means fewer breakdowns and faster transactions, reducing wait times. A pilot station was tested downtown over two winters with no technical issues.
- More Accessible: Larger, full-colour screens and a user-friendly design make the stations easier for everyone to use.
- More Efficient: Real-time data will help us monitor usage and availability, so we can make better decisions about parking policy and enforcement.
The City is upgrading all public pay parking stations to improve your parking experience and to better serve our community. While the current stations have helped manage the City’s pay parking for years, it's time for an upgrade to meet the needs of a modern and growing Saskatoon.
Here’s why we’re upgrading:
If you do not have tap functionality, you can still pay using coins, the ParkedIn Parking App, a City Parking Card or by scanning the QR code located on the pay station.
Upgrades began in June 2025 and will continue through spring 2026. Stations will remain operational during the transition, though brief interruptions may occur.

Better Buses, Better Service – Transit route and capacity improvements coming this fall

- Phase 1 – August 31
- Increased frequency on Route 4, 43, 44, 45 and 46, serving Evergreen, Willowgrove, Arbor Creek and 115th Street.
- Increased frequency and reliability on Route 17 from Stonebridge to USask.
- Up to 50% more capacity with articulating buses on Routes 10 and 43 that align with high school bell times.
- New Route 340 for Holy Cross and Walter Murray high school students, replacing Route 338 with an expanded service to Rosewood.
- Temporary service reductions will impact Routes 2 (pm only), 22, 55, 325 (pm only), 336 and 352 (pm only).
- Phase 2 – Once new buses are integrated into the fleet, by October.
- Introduce an extra run for consistent 10-minute frequency on Route 17 from Stonebridge to USask.
- New Route 339 for Holy Cross and Walter Murray high schools, replacing 338 with an expanded service to The Meadows.
Saskatoon Transit is rolling out service improvements this fall to improve reliability and address bus overcrowding beginning this September. Riders will benefit from more frequent service, school-focused trips and longer, articulated buses on high-traffic routes during peak times.
“These changes are a direct response to what we’ve heard from our riders,” says Mike Moellenbeck, Director of Saskatoon Transit. “Improvements are focused on areas where customers were facing the greatest challenges with overcrowding, reliability and alignment with schedules, which were the routes with significant growth of high school and post-secondary students.”
Riders can expect improvements starting in September, with more coming by October as new buses arrive:
Temporary service interruptions
Saskatoon Transit continues to invest in its fleet with regular orders of new buses and expects delivery of ten new 40ft buses in the coming weeks with ten more arriving shortly after. While we await the arrival of new buses, there are some short-term peak-time service reductions that will affect Routes 2 Meadowgreen (pm only), 22 Confederation and 55 Lakeridge/University. High school Routes 325 (am) and 336 will also be temporarily unavailable. When new buses are integrated into the fleet, these service adjustments will be restored.

CORRECTION: Weekend detours for northbound Warman Road lane closures

- Saturday, September 6 and Sunday, September 7 – from 7th Avenue North to Circle Drive East
The City of Saskatoon will be closing the northbound lanes of Warman Road between 33rd Street East and Circle Drive East for resurfacing work. This project will be completed in two phases:
Phase one:
Phase two:
During phase one: northbound traffic will be detoured to Quebec Avenue up to Circle Drive East.
During phase two: southbound lanes will accommodate two-way traffic to maintain traffic movement.
Drivers are reminded to watch for signage and plan for possible delays, and to use the zipper merge when approaching the work zone to keep traffic flowing smoothly.
Resurfacing is done when a road develops structural or pavement issues. The process removes the existing asphalt surface and replaces it with fresh asphalt. This extends the life of the roadway and provides a smoother, safer drive.

E-scooter users encouraged to ride responsibly

With e-scooters becoming a more common mode of transportation on city roads and shared pathways, remember to be a responsible and respectful rider.
Shared e-scooters have been allowed in Saskatoon since 2023. City Council voted to allow privately owned e-scooters on the public right-of-way at their May 2025 meeting.
Under the provincial regulations for limited speed motor vehicles, e-scooter users must be at least 16 years old and are required to wear a helmet.
In Saskatoon, e-scooters are permitted on streets with posted speed limits 50 km/h or less, shared-use paths, cycle tracks and protected bike lanes. Sidewalk riding is not allowed, and scooters should not be operated at a speed greater than 24 km/h.
When travelling on shared paths, riders should use a bell or horn to signal to pedestrians and cyclists. Give as much space as possible when passing.
Please ride responsibly to create a safe and enjoyable environment for all road and pathway users.
