The City will return to areas that were inaccessible due to construction once those projects have wrapped up. Thanks for your patience and cooperation in helping to make our city look clean and ready for summer.

Summer park maintenance in full swing

July 2, 2025 - 10:00am

CY25-11213
July 2, 2025 - 10:00 am

Summer is here, and parks maintenance activities are now in full swing for the more than 2,130 hectares of parks, sport fields, naturalized areas, flower pots, sports fields and other open spaces throughout Saskatoon. These spaces are diverse and require a range of care and management techniques.

Some of the main park maintenance service levels in the spring and summer months include:

Mowing

  • During the regular mowing season (May 15 to September 15) irrigated parks are mowed once per week while non-irrigated parks are mowed once every two weeks.
  • Contracted services provide litter picks and mowing cycles to over 400 hectares of Circle Drive and other major freeway corridors and landscape areas.

Waste Collection

  • Emptying of garbage receptacles in parks occurs once per week from May 15 to October 15.
  • Litter control is ongoing in all naturalized park areas and along Circle Drive and other major freeways.

Shrub Beds and Flower Pots

  • Shrub bed maintenance occurs from May 15 to September 15.
  • Planting flowers in over 100 park beds and distributing 1,050 flower pots to Business Improvement Districts and major centre medians.  Learn more at saskatoon.ca/flowerpots

Irrigation

  • Sport fields receive irrigation application services at 38mm of water per week.
  • General park areas and neighbourhood fields receive irrigation application services where available at 25mm of water per week.

Weed Control

  • Herbicides have not been used since 2004 to control broadleaf weeds, such as dandelions, on park turf and sports fields. Instead, Parks uses established cultural turf practices (i.e., mowing, fertilizing and irrigation where available) to improve the condition of turf areas. Aeration and topdressing are also applied to sports fields.
  • Only when necessary, provincially licensed and trained Parks staff apply spot applications of herbicide to eliminate weeds in shrub beds, tree wells, and on hard surfaces such as asphalt pathways and concrete medians. Herbicides are also used to control noxious and prohibited weeds. Warning signs are placed in areas of herbicide application.

For a full list of park maintenance service levels, visit saskatoon.ca/parkmaintenance.

Line marking continues on Saskatoon roads and crosswalks

June 27, 2025 - 10:00am

TC25-11189
June 27, 2025 - 10:00 am

The City of Saskatoon continues to work on repainting lines on roads and crosswalks, ensuring we can all move around the city safely.

Line painting began in the spring and includes crosswalks and other road markings getting a much-needed fresh coat of paint.

Crews have finished painting 65 per cent of crosswalks, including all school zone crossings. This work is expected to be done in early July. When crosswalk painting is completed, other roadway symbols such as turning arrows, railway crossing markings, and bike symbols will be repainted.

The City’s line marking truck has painted the equivalent of nearly 26 kilometres of white lane lines and 14 kilometres of yellow centre lines along several busy roads. This work is expected to wrap up by the end of August.

Please use caution and take care when you encounter a painting crew on the road. They’re not blocking your path – they’re making a safer one. Let’s do our part to keep them safe, too, and respect work zones.

Reminder: School and playground zones are in effect year-round

June 27, 2025 - 6:30am

TC25-11194
June 27, 2025 - 6:30 am

School may be out, but school zones are still in.

The City of Saskatoon is reminding motorists that school and playground zones with posted 30 km/h speed limits are in effect year-round, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week.

Drivers must reduce their speed when travelling through these zones, no matter the season. Getting children safely to and from where they learn and play is everyone’s responsibility.

Where school and playground signs do not include a posted speed limit, treat the sign as a caution. You do not have to reduce speed in these areas. However, it is important to stay alert and pay close attention.

The penalty for speeding in a school zone starts at $170 with additional fines for every kilometre over the speed limit. The penalty for speeding in playground zones is the same as any other speeding offense, with fines starting at $100.

U-turns are not permitted in school zones around elementary or high schools.

Learn more about school and playground zones at saskatoon.ca/speedlimit.

Saskatoon Transit is rolling out service changes on June 29

June 26, 2025 - 1:54pm

TC25-11185
June 26, 2025 - 1:54 pm

Saskatoon Transit will implement route and service changes effective June 29, 2025, to improve frequency, reliability, and overall customer experience.

These changes simplify routes, improve on-time performance on 8th Street, and offer more direct and frequent connections to key destinations, such as schools, hospitals, shopping centres, and USask.

By creating a more connected transit system, buses will arrive more often and on time, providing riders with more reliable travel options.

Overview of changes:

  • Route 8 becomes the only route on 8th Street between City Centre and Centre Mall, operating at a 10-minute frequency during peak hours.
  • Route 10 replaces portions of Routes 81 and 82, connecting USask, Taylor Street, and Centre Mall more efficiently.
  • Route 17 is modified and consolidates a portion of Route 13 to offer continuous service between Lawson Heights Mall and Stonebridge via USask, with new evening and weekend service for Lawson Heights Mall.
  • Local route adjustments
    • Route 16 improves speed and connections to City Centre, USask and Market Mall; service along 7th Street is removed and replaced by service along Main Street.
    • Routes 84, 86, 87 will have faster travel times and better connections to Centre Mall; these routes will not operate west of Centre Mall.
  • Schedule changes to Routes 18 and 83 to improve reliability.

These early improvements lay the foundation for Saskatoon Transit’s Bus Network Redesign (BNR) Phase 1, which will be developed through continued engagement starting this fall.

Download the Transit app to help with trip planning, or visit saskatoontransit.ca for new maps and schedules.

Questions regarding these changes can be directed to Customer Service 306.975.3100 or transit.services@saskatoon.ca.

City secures federal funds to support construction of organics processing facility

June 26, 2025 - 10:30am

UE25-11143
June 26, 2025 - 10:30 am

The City of Saskatoon’s plan to build a long-term, City-owned organics processing facility will receive up to $8.4 million from the federal government.

Through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF), the Government of Canada will contribute funding for the construction of the new facility, which will provide organics processing for the residential green cart program and replace drop-off services currently offered at the City’s West Compost Depot.

“This investment is about real results for people in Saskatoon; better waste services, a cleaner environment and infrastructure that keeps up with a growing city,” says the Honourable Buckley Belanger, Secretary of State for Rural Development. “Here, and across Canada, the federal government is stepping up to support communities with the tools they need to thrive."

"This new facility is a win for our community and our environment. It means Saskatoon families will have a reliable, long-term solution for organics waste, and it brings us one step closer to a cleaner, greener city for future generations," said Mayor Cynthia Block. "We’re grateful for the federal support that’s helping us turn our sustainability goals into real, local action."

“We’re very pleased to receive this funding from the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund,” says Brendan Lemke, Director of Water & Waste Operations. “It not only helps with the cost of building a permanent, City-owned organics facility, but also supports our efforts to divert more waste from the landfill and extend its lifespan.”

The City Administration previously evaluated several long-term organics processing options and determined that constructing a City-owned facility would result in the lowest long-term cost while continuing to provide the same service levels. Planning and design for the facility is well underway. Construction will begin this summer and the facility is anticipated to open to the public in late 2026.

Since the city-wide green cart program launched in 2023, more than 40,000 tonnes of organic waste have successfully been diverted from the landfill, exceeding the lower range of annual projections.

To learn more about the Organics Processing Facility project, visit saskatoon.ca/organicsfacility.

CM25-11175
June 23, 2025 - 4:00 pm

Despite a drizzly start, the skies cleared and the community spirit shone bright at the City of Saskatoon’s 49th Annual Civic Pancake Fundraising Breakfast on Thursday, June 19! Thank you to everyone who came out to support the United Way of Saskatoon & Area.

We’re proud to announce that our 49th Annual Civic Pancake Breakfast raised $10,594.18 (after expenses) for United Way Saskatoon & Area.

Pancake Breakfast results year over year;

Total number of breakfast tickets sold in 2025: 1,044
Total number of breakfast tickets sold in 2024: 1,344
Total number of breakfast tickets sold in 2023: 1,289

(Note: Tickets in 2024 and 2023 were priced at $7)

Paying it forward with kindness

Thank you for your generosity, Saskatoon, you paid it forward and purchased 115 Act of Kindness tickets! Saskatoon City Employees Credit Union and the City brought back the Act of Kindness Ticket board, allowing attendees and non-attendees to purchase extra breakfast tickets that allowed more people in our community to enjoy a warm breakfast and a welcoming atmosphere. Whether used or unused, every dollar from these tickets goes directly to United Way Saskatoon & Area.

Last year, the City’s 48th Annual Civic Pancake Breakfast tally ended with a record-breaking final donation (revenue less expenses) to the United Way Saskatoon & Area of $13,471.50.

The City of Saskatoon extends a grateful thank you to our valued breakfast sponsors listed below - we could not hold this important fundraising event without their generous support. Thank you to all for making our important community fundraiser another great success!

June is Electricity Month: Join us in honoring Saskatoon’s electrical workers!

June 23, 2025 - 6:00am

UE25-11132
June 23, 2025 - 6:00 am

Powering our city is no small feat—it takes dedication, skill, and teamwork. From June 23-27, Saskatoon Light & Power is celebrating the incredible individuals who keep our homes, businesses, and communities connected.

Electrical workers are the backbone of our city’s electrical infrastructure, working tirelessly in all conditions to ensure reliable power. Whether scaling utility poles, troubleshooting complex systems, ensuring reliability of metering infrastructure, or maintaining the grid, their precision and commitment help keep Saskatoon shining.

From system controllers and electricians to lineworkers, technicians, metering staff, warehouse teams, and administrative support—each worker plays a vital role in keeping the lights on and our city running smoothly.

Let’s show our appreciation!

Here’s how you can recognize their hard work:

  1. Say Thank You: A simple "thank you" goes a long way. If you see an electrical worker in action, take a moment to show your gratitude.
  1. Share the Love: Use social media to spread appreciation. Share stories, photos, and messages recognizing their dedication.
  1. Support Safety: Electrical work comes with risks. Do your part by reporting any hazards or concerns in your community.
  1. Educate & Inform: Talk to friends and family about electrical safety and the essential work these professionals do year-round.

Join us in celebrating the people who power Saskatoon! Visit saskatoon.ca/ElectricalWW for more information.
