Commercial fire - 1900 block of Quebec Avenue
At 10:26 a.m. on May 8, 2023, the Saskatoon Fire Department was alerted to a heavy smoke in the area of 1900 block Quebec Ave. One fire engine was dispatched, first arriving fire crews found heavy smoke and visible flames in a metal recycling pile. Additional resources were requested, 2 additional fire engines, one ladder truck and the Battalion Chief were dispatched to the scene. All incoming fire crews were assigned their tactical duties.
An attack on the fire was conducted by fire crews utilizing the ladder truck as well as a large volume ground monitor. Traffic detours were set up on Quebec Avenue to protect water supply hoses running across the road. Fire crews worked with equipment operators on site to use heavy equipment to open up the pile allowing access to fully extinguish the fire. Firefighters brought the fire under control at 11:19 a.m. however, remained on scene extinguishing small hot spots. By 1:30 p.m. the traffic restrictions were removed and the incident was concluded.
Cause of the fire is undetermined. There is no damage estimate at this time.
No injuries to fire fighters or civilians were reported.
