Modifications completed at the intersection of Clarence Avenue and Main Street to improve safety
Following a traffic review on Clarence and Main Street, modifications have been made to improve the safety of the intersection for all road users. Modifications include:
-
Right turn only lanes for drivers on Main Street at Clarence Avenue. Drivers on Main Street are now required to turn right at the intersection and are no longer able to drive straight through or turn left onto Clarence Avenue.
-
A pedestrian signal on the South side of Clarence Avenue to allow crossings on both the North and South side of the intersection.
-
Cyclist push buttons on Main Street to activate the pedestrian signals. Cyclists are still permitted to cross Clarence Avenue or turn left onto Clarence Avenue.
The City of Saskatoon completed a traffic review at Clarence Avenue and Main Street last year after several residents reached out with concerns about safety at the intersection. Residents of Nutana and Varsity View had previously identified the Clarence Avenue and Main Street intersection as a necessary location for safety improvements through the City’s Neighbourhood Traffic Review process.
An on-site engagement event was held with residents to discuss the recommended changes in August 2022 and a broader engagement event was held in February 2023. City Council approved the modifications to Clarence Avenue and Main Street at its March 29, 2023, Public Meeting.
