Weather

From now until 8 p.m. tonight there is a chance of showers as well as risk of thunderstorms. The likelihood of precipitation is medium with winds gusting from the east up to 50km/h until 5 p.m. then tapering off to a light easterly wind. The skies will clear to partly cloudy overnight.

City crews are currently responding to power outages, lifted manhole covers and flooded streets following a severe thunderstorm Monday evening.

Environment Canada issued a thunderstorm warning and then a thunderstorm watch earlier in the day. 

The weather service says a low pressure system in south central Saskatchewan has and will continue to bring a risk of severe thunderstorms to the area this evening and overnight. 

Environment Canada also reminds the public heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

With the arrival of summer, the City reminds residents to take precautions to prevent the spread of West Nile and other animal-borne infectious diseases in Saskatoon.

City crews are working on reducing mosquito populations through the annual mosquito control program which will continue throughout the summer.  The mosquitoes currently being controlled are primarily nuisance mosquitoes but also include Culex tarsalis, the primary carrier of West Nile virus between people and birds.

Drivers are advised to avoid the intersection of 51st Street and Warman Road on Saturday, July 8. The City will be installing new overhead streetlight arms and the work will require phased intersection closures for traffic travelling in the westbound, southbound, and eastbound directions. Detour signs will direct drivers to take alternate routes.

The intersection will be closed to traffic as follows (times are approximate):
