Effective April 1, 2017, the Provincial government will no longer pay the City a grant-in-lieu of taxes for property and right of ways that SaskPower and SaskEnergy utilities operate within the City of Saskatoon.

The removal of grants-in-lieu of taxation (GIL) results in the loss of $11.4 million or the equivalent of a 5.63% tax increase.

“This leaves a significant hole in our operating budget,” says Mayor Charlie Clark.  “It forces City Council to choose between raising taxes or making cuts to core services – like snow clearing, leisure facilities, police, or fire.”
