Cankerworms Abundant in Saskatoon this Year
June 22, 2023 - 2:00pm
Cankerworms and leafrollers are an annual issue for Saskatoon’s urban forest. The trees may experience heavy defoliation but, unless there are underlying issues, the trees will recover and produce new foliage.
Cankerworms, also known as loopers and inchworms, are found primarily on the leaves of elm, ash, and maple trees. The fall and spring cankerworm species often feed together during June and July. They can be found hanging from silken threads underneath infested trees and can be a nuisance.
Leafrollers feed while concealed within leaves that are rolled or tied together with silk webbing. Ash trees are their preference, but they also attack other tree species. The larvae will feed in mid- to late-June, but the leaves will remain rolled throughout the summer.
Tree banding can be used to deter cankerworms; however, it is not effective against leafrollers. The best time to place bands on trees is from September to May to help prevent the wingless adult female cankerworm moths from climbing host trees to lay their eggs. It is important to remove the bands at the beginning of June because the bands can collect moisture and cause the trunk to rot. Unlike the adult female cankerworm, the female leafrollers have wings and will fly from tree to tree to lay their eggs.
The City does not control cankerworms, forest tent caterpillars, or leafrollers as they typically do not impact the health of the trees they attack. Homeowners interested in controlling them on their own trees should contact a horticulture professional for advice. For information on Dutch elm disease, wildlife, tree defoliators, and urban pests such as mosquitoes, please visit www.saskatoon.ca/pests.

Update: University Bridge repairs underway following fire response
June 22, 2023 - 11:30am
- From the east side of the bridge, drivers are encouraged to take Clarence Avenue to 12th Street and use the Broadway Bridge or use 8th street and use the Traffic Bridge or Senator Sid Buckwold Bridge.
- From the west side of the bridge, drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes downtown and to use the Broadway Bridge, Traffic Bridge, or Senator Sid Buckwold Bridge.
The University Bridge remains closed to motorists as crews work to repair core holes that were drilled in the bridge decking to aid the Saskatoon Fire Department in its response to a fire underneath the structure on June 21.
Fire crews cleared the scene and there is no longer a fire risk on the bridge. City crews have assessed the bridge and there does not appear to be any structural damage. It is anticipated that the bridge will be reopened by late-afternoon today, barring any delays or unforeseen circumstances. Walkways on the bridge have been reopened for pedestrians and cyclists.
Spadina Crescent, below the bridge between 24th and 25th streets, has now been reopened fully for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
For your safety and ours, all members of the public are asked to please stay away from unauthorized areas on any bridge structure and to contact Saskatoon Police Service if they witness any unauthorized access.
Until the bridge is fully reopened, we ask drivers to reroute their commute:
This closure impacts transit service on Routes 4, 43, 44, 45, 46 and 6. Transit service alerts and real-time bus information are available on third-party apps like Transit and Google Maps Transit on desktop.
Please allow for additional travel time to reach destinations, and remember to respect all detour signage.

University Bridge fire under control: traffic lanes will not reopen for morning commute
June 21, 2023 - 6:45pm
- From the east side of the bridge, drivers are encouraged to take Clarence Avenue to 12th Street and use the Broadway Bridge or use 8th street and use the Traffic Bridge or Senator Sid Buckwold Bridge.
- From the west side of the bridge, drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes downtown and to use the Broadway Bridge, Traffic Bridge, or Senator Sid Buckwold Bridge.
The University Bridge remains closed to drivers and will not reopen for the Thursday, June 22, 2023 morning commute, however, the pedestrian walkways on the bridge have reopened. Pedestrians are cautioned to only use the walkways and to stay off the bridge deck as it remains an active fire scene. Spadina Crescent, below the bridge between 24th and 25th streets, remains closed to drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.
Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) brought the fire under control at approximately 5:30 p.m. and will continue to monitor hot spots overnight.
Detailed inspections are being conducted to assess the bridge's condition and confirm its safety prior to reopening. Based on a preliminary assessment, there doesn’t appear to be any major structural damage to the University Bridge; however, further evaluations are necessary to determine the overall impact. SFD, along with EMO, City engineers, Saskatoon Light & Power and Saskatoon Water remain on the scene to continue to closely monitor the situation.
Maintaining the bridge's safety and integrity is top priority. Once further inspections are done, work will begin on rectifying any potential damage
The City is asking drivers to reroute their commute:
A timeline of when the bridge will be reopened is not known at this time.

This is a complete closure with no access to the bridge during this time for drivers or pedestrians. The bridge will remain closed until further notice.

Local students to have art displayed on buses
June 20, 2023 - 11:00am
Saskatoon Transit unveiled two unique pieces of student art today that celebrate the vibrance of youth using active transportation and will adorn transit buses around the city. This year’s student art contest welcomed students from schools across the city to showcase their artistic talents.
"We are delighted to partner with elementary schools on this project," says Cory Shrigley, Customer Support and Engagement Manager of Saskatoon Transit. "These students should feel a great sense of pride and honor when they see their artwork driving past on the side of a bus this summer."
Among the talented participants, students Amina and Hannah from Chief Whitecap School demonstrated exceptional creativity and were selected as this year's "best of show" winners.
The winning pieces were chosen in collaboration with the Remai Modern and submissions were based on their reflection of the "Active Transportation" theme.
The artwork will be prominently displayed on the sides of ten Saskatoon Transit buses, traversing different routes across the city throughout the summer.
Superintendent Nicola Bishop-Yong from Saskatoon Public Schools extends her congratulations to the students for highlighting the benefits of active transportation and showcasing what it means to be environmentally responsible.
"Through our 'Move to Grow' initiative, our school division encourages students to embrace active transportation and make mindful choices that support their well-being, community, and the world,” says Bishop-Yong. "I am proud of all the students who participated in this contest and expressed the importance of being community-minded stewards of the environment."
"This partnership with the Remai, the Saskatoon Public School Board, and the Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Board helps support and promote art, especially local art, alongside emphasizing integrated mobility," concludes Shrigley.
Water safety on the South Saskatchewan River
June 20, 2023 - 9:00am
- Be informed of changing water currents. Check with the Water Security Agency for river advisories.
- Plan your route and scout potential hazards or obstacles, including shallow areas and sandbars.
- Check the weather conditions and note any river advisories.
- Inspect your watercraft for safety preparedness.
- Operate your craft at a safe speed.
- Maintain a respectful distance from other river users.
- Do not operate a craft while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- Ensure your craft is equipped with appropriate markers and lighting.
- Care for the environment by properly launching, fuelling, starting, and loading your craft.
- Call 911 immediately to report the incident, noting details about the individual, time, and situation.
- Keep track of recognizable landmarks around the area where the individual was first seen in distress in the water.
- Coach the individual from the shore edge on the below noted tips for water self-rescue.
- Stay calm.
- Keep your head above the water.
- Remove any heavy or bulky clothing items.
- Don’t fight the current; move with the current as you work your way to the shore edge.
With summer weather upon us, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) is advising the public to exercise increased caution in and around the South Saskatchewan River. Recreation on the river can be fun and relaxing, but safety should be top of mind when residents approach the water.
Know before you go
Evaluate weather, equipment and water conditions from the shore before approaching the river:
Be respectful when operating watercrafts
Operating watercraft on the South Saskatchewan River is permitted where posted and requires proof of competency. When launching a pleasure craft or boating on the river, operators should be familiar with boating regulations and follow the Transport Canada Safe Boating Guide. Watercraft operators are required to have a lifejacket or personal flotation device (PFD) on board for each person on a watercraft; this includes both human- and motor-powered crafts.
River users should maintain proper river etiquette, and be considerate of others on the waterway:
Swimming is prohibited in the South Saskatchewan River
Bylaw No. 4433 prohibits swimming in the South Saskatchewan River within city limits. Wading or walking through the water is permitted unless otherwise posted. Protective footwear is recommended when walking along the river’s shore or sandbar to avoid cuts and abrasions from sharp rocks or other hazards.
View weir from a safe distance
The South Saskatchewan River is equipped with a weir to alter the flow and discharge of water along the river. This barrier produces a powerful backwash of water that is capable of trapping objects and people. The weir must never be approached and should only be viewed from a safe distance.
Water rescue tips
If you witness someone in distress in the river:
In the event that you are in distress in the river:
Always be cautious near larger bodies of water. In an emergency, call 911 immediately.

Reminder! 2024 Ward Boundary Review Public Engagement session tomorrow evening
June 19, 2023 - 12:00pm
Early planning for Saskatoon’s 2024 municipal/school boards’ elections to be held in fall 2024 is underway. One of the first steps is to review the boundaries of the city’s ten current wards to ensure they all have similar population numbers, according to The Cities Act.
In the fall of 2022 City Administration reported to Council that under the existing provisions of The Cities Act, Ward 2 and Ward 7 are currently outside of the allowable 10% population variance threshold that triggers a ward boundary review. The Ward Boundary Commission has been created following The Municipal Wards Commission Bylaw and consists of King’s Bench Justice Richard Danyliuk, U of S Political Studies Professor Dr. Kathy Walker, and City Clerk Adam Tittemore.
The Ward Boundary Commission is now entering into the public engagement phase of the ward boundary review process and will be holding the first public engagement session to invite public feedback on several possible options to reconfigure ward boundaries.
The Municipal Wards Commission will present three options for ward boundary changes for feedback. The Commission has considered current density, future population growth, geographic barriers, limiting change, communities of interest, and maintaining neighbourhood boundaries.
Changing ward boundaries to ensure all ten wards comply with the legislated population range could affect the Community Association you belong to, or the City Councillor you've had to date - we know this is important to residents.
Plan to attend this first of two planned engagement opportunities tomorrow evening. Share your feedback, review current boundaries and the three options presented, and Saskatoon’s projected growth areas:
Ward Boundary Review Public Engagement Session #1
Tuesday, June 20, 2023
7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Committee Room E, City Hall
Use entrance #1 at the corner of 4th Ave and 23rd St East
Public parking: available in the City Hall staff lot after 6:00 p.m.
Saskatoon residents can also provide feedback online through a brief survey at saskatoon.ca/engage/ward-boundaries, in-person sessions, emailing or writing a letter to the City Clerk’s office or dropping a submission in a comment box in the City Hall lobby. City Hall was chosen for the in-person engagement session due to its centrality to all affected wards.
A second engagement session will be held this September following a review of the feedback provided through session #1 and the engagement process. Following this, the Municipal Wards Commission will establish new ward boundaries and file its report with City Council in fall 2023.
Ward boundary reviews must be completed no less than 180 days before a general municipal election. The new ward boundaries will be in effect for the City of Saskatoon municipal elections and the School Board trustee elections to be held in November of 2024.
For more information visit saskatoon.ca/wardboundaries or call 306-975-3240.
Water pressure remains lower west of Circle Drive due to ongoing water main issues
June 17, 2023 - 9:45am
Homes and businesses west of Circle Drive and south of Airport Drive continue to experience lower-than-normal water pressure following a break along the primary water main on Monday, June 12. Additional breaks in the water distribution system are delaying the process of restoring water pressure fully by as much as a week - or more. Watch for updates as repairs progress.
The water pipes that we isolated as part of the Circle Drive water main repair did not result in water outage for most homes or businesses and water remains safe to drink. Drinking Water Advisories are in place for affected properties. Water pressure is adequate for normal usage; however, people may notice a change with their fixtures, appliances and sprinklers.
It will take several days for crews to complete all repairs, flush the pipes and complete laboratory testing before we can restore full water pressure . We will notify homes or businesses impacted by other breaks with a yellow Drinking Water Advisory door hanger that includes instructions.
The City thanks everyone for their patience as crews diligently work 7 days a week to get water service restored.

Northbound lanes on Circle Drive between 33rd Street and Airport Drive re-open following water main repair
June 16, 2023 - 5:15am
Northbound lanes on Circle Drive between 33rd Street and Airport Drive re-opened to traffic just prior to 6 a.m. today following necessary restoration work after a water main break. City crews had been working since Tuesday morning to complete repairs.
The repairs were prolonged due to further breaks occurring during the initial repair. Unfortunately, subsequent breaks do occasionally occur after initial repairs are completed as some portions of the pipes date back as far as 1962. Crews worked Wednesday night both repairing the pipe and replacing an adjacent valve that had broken. The paving contractor arrived on Thursday afternoon to complete roadwork restoration.
The City would like to thank everyone for their patience during this repair and the unexpected delays it may have caused.

The Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo (Zoo) is growing by five as a dazzle of zebras in need of a home arrived at the Zoo earlier this week.
“The Zoo was contacted by provincial officials regarding a herd of zebra that needed different accommodations,” says Jeff Mitchell, Zoo Manager. “As the only CAZA (Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums) facility in Saskatchewan, we knew we had the space, skills and expertise to create a safe environment for these animals.”
The zebras have moved into one of the three caribou habitats at the Zoo. The space includes a heated and insulated barn and features a large outdoor yard with access to a pond for the herd to graze and explore.
“We will keep a close eye on the herd as it adapts to its new home,” says Mitchell. “Our primary concern is the comfort, health, safety and wellbeing of these amazing animals. We expect the zebras will keep close to the barn for the next several weeks and will eventually explore the greater areas of their new habitat.”
Known for their distinctive black-and-white striped coats, zebras can be found in a variety of habitats including savannas, grasslands, woodlands, shrublands and mountainous areas of eastern and southern Africa.

Water main break on Circle Drive at 33rd Street continues to impact traffic and water pressure
June 14, 2023 - 4:15pm
Northbound lanes on Circle Drive between 33rd Street and Airport Drive remain closed due to necessary restoration work following a water main break. City crews have been working since Tuesday morning to complete repairs.
The initial leak had been repaired but unfortunately, as is common in water main repairs, when the line was re-pressured, another break occurred. This has prolonged the repair. The City shares everyone’s frustration as the northbound lanes will not be reopened until later this week. A reopening date will be communicated once confirmed.
Drivers should avoid this area while the repairs are completed or consider taking an alternate route while respecting traffic detours in place. Homes and businesses west of Circle Drive and south of Airport Drive may notice lower-than-normal water pressure.
The City thanks everyone for their continued patience during this repair and for following traffic detour signs for everyone’s safety.

Green cart program sees more than 3,000 tonnes of organic material diverted
June 14, 2023 - 11:30am
With city-wide Green Cart collection now into a second month, participation in the new waste diversion program is steadily increasing. The rate of carts set out on their scheduled collection day for green carts averaged 66 per cent in May, increasing over the month to 75 per cent in the final week. Black cart set out rates historically average at 77 percent. In the month of May, the City collected 3,123 tonnes of organic waste, more than half the amount received from the entire green cart subscription program in 2022.
The City of Saskatoon is aware of a social media post regarding a fire involving a green cart. The City has not received any reports regarding fires in green carts. Organic materials break down during the composting process and they create heat. However, the heat generated is never great enough to ignite the materials approved for disposal in green carts.
Some materials that are not accepted in the green cart could pose a fire risk of improperly disposed if in the green cart. These include residential fire pit ash and briquettes, cigarettes and butts, hazardous substances, batteries, compressed gases and explosives.
To date, approximately 1.3 per cent (40 tonnes) of green cart collections have needed to be landfilled due to contamination. As a reminder to residents, only BPI-certified compostable bags are accepted. If there are visible contaminants, such as garbage bags, carts will not be collected. Additional effort and expense is required to remove contamination from organic waste and can result in a lower quality finished compost product.
For a full list of accepted materials, visit saskatoon.ca/greencart. If you’re not sure where to dispose of something, ask the Saskatoon Waste Wizard at saskatoon.ca/wastewizard or download the app.

Water main break on Circle Drive at 33rd Street causing lower water pressure and traffic detours – please avoid the area
June 12, 2023 - 7:30pm
A watermain break caused a substantial washout in the road on Circle Drive northbound/eastbound late this afternoon. All northbound/eastbound lanes are closed and traffic is being detoured to the 33rd Street off ramp.
All southbound lanes on Circle Drive are also being re-routed over the 33rd Street overpass and back onto Circle Drive while City crews wash the infrastructure tonight only. This work will be completed by 7 a.m. Tuesday and all southbound lanes will reopen.
City crews are completing the emergency utility locates and will return Tuesday morning to repair the water main. Homes and businesses west of Circle Drive and south of Airport Drive may notice lower than normal water pressure. Airport Industrial and Montgomery Place will not be affected.
The full detour on Circle Drive northbound will remain in place into Tuesday and morning commuters are encouraged to take a different route. We will share more information about the road re-opening once the repair is underway.

City celebrates Next-of-Kin Memorial Avenue 100th Anniversary
June 12, 2023 - 9:00am
The City of Saskatoon, the Canadian Armed Forces and members of numerous veterans’ organizations will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the original dedication of the Next-of-Kin Memorial Avenue in Woodlawn Cemetery on Sunday, June 18 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Next-of-Kin Memorial Avenue was opened on June 17, 1923, before a crowd of 8,000 people. This beautiful avenue serves as a living memorial to those who lost their lives in the Great War of 1914-1918. It runs from 33rd Street, through the Woodlawn Cemetery gates and on to the Soldiers Cairn.
Immediately following this 100th anniversary commemoration will be the Saskatoon’s Annual Citizens’ Decoration Day Service, with ceremonies to follow, at the Soldiers’ Memorial Cairn. Decoration Day provides an opportunity to pay tribute to those brave individuals who lost their lives in the service of our country.
This outdoor event is open to the public and attendees will be able to view all the activities from designated standing areas.

Saskatoon couple donates $1M to help build the bears a new home
June 9, 2023 - 9:00pm
The Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo (Zoo) is now one step closer to building a new home for grizzly bears Mistaya and Koda thanks to a one-million-dollar donation from local residents Jerry and Tina Grandey. The announcement was made on Friday, June 9th at the Saskatoon Zoo Foundation’s 24th annual ZOOGALA, marking the single largest private donation in the Zoo’s history.
“Tina and Jerry have been amazing supporters of the Zoo for many years,” says Dawn Woroniuk, Chief Executive Officer, Saskatoon Zoo Foundation. “Tina served on the Saskatoon Zoo Foundation board for many years playing a key role in building the bears current habitat at the Kinsmen Bear Exhibit. Tina was also instrumental in the creation of ZOOGALA, our one-of-a-kind annual fundraiser that has enabled the Saskatoon Zoo Foundation to contribute to several capital projects and improvements to the Zoo and will celebrate its 25th anniversary of the event next year.”
“We are so thankful for this generous contribution” says Jeff Mitchell, Zoo Manager. “This donation provides us with an opportunity to further enhance the habitat features and amenities to not only provide the best care and quality of life for our grizzly bears, but also an opportunity for an enhanced visitor experience for those who come to learn more about these majestic animals.”
Grizzly bears Mistaya and Koda have called the Kinsmen Bear Exhibit home since arriving at the Zoo as orphaned cubs back in 2008. The pair enjoy taking dips in their swimming pool, soaking up the sun on their favourite rocks and of course, taking a long winter nap in their dens.
The new bear habitat will be significantly larger than the current habitat and will feature climbing structures, foraging opportunities, resting and sleeping locations, safe retreats, natural vegetation and soils, water features and a number of environmental enhancements that will allow the bears to continue to demonstrate their natural behaviours.

Indigenous Ceremonialists hold ceremony to help guide the planning and design of the Downtown Event and Entertainment District project
June 9, 2023 - 2:00pm
- City Council
- Administrative Steering Committee
- DEED Advisory Group
- TCU Place
- SaskTel Centre
- Midtown Plaza
Ceremonialists representing the main Indigenous linguistic/cultural groups on Treaty 6 Territory this morning held a pipe ceremony near the intersection of Pacific Avenue and 23rd Street.
The ceremony was to acknowledge the importance of working together in a good way as the planning and feasibility work for the Downtown Event and Entertainment District project continues. Holding the ceremony is a way to honour the Indigenous histories and cultures that are an integral part of the Saskatoon community.
“The goal of the District is to create a welcoming and vibrant gathering place for all people,” says Mayor Charlie Clark. “The foundational relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people is an essential starting place to help guide this planning and achieve that goal. This is not a groundbreaking ceremony, but a ceremony to help us work together in a good way and build a city that acts on Truth and Reconciliation.”
Indigenous people hold ceremonies to honour the land and what will be done on the land. This was the first of several ceremonies to mark different elements of this project.
Representatives of the main partners for the Downtown Event and Entertainment District project attended the pipe ceremony:
More information about the ceremonies can be found in the attached background document.

Bridge and overpass washing underway
June 9, 2023 - 11:00am
Following street sweeping on major roads, City crews move on to pressure washing seven bridges, 47 overpasses and 21 pedestrian crossings. Structure washing occurs weekly overnight Monday through Thursday, from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. until the middle of July, barring any unforeseen circumstances and weather permitting.
Please watch for and obey lane restrictions and signs to safely move past workers and their equipment.
Annual washing and sealing remove the road dirt and salt that collects along the sides throughout the year, to prevent corrosion and deterioration, extending the life of the structure.
Saskatoon Transit may be affected by detours. Transit service alerts and real-time bus information are available on third-party apps like Transit and Google Maps Transit on desktop.
